Make A Bold Statement With Colorblock Home Decor

    image
Ida Hsiang on Oct 28, 2009 8:20 AM PDT
The colorblock craze is one that I like very much. There is nothing more sophisticated than that classic combo of black and white. Bright, solid hues matched with black or each other make for an eye-catching and fashionable ensemble. It's such an easy and appealing way to add interest and color, it's a wonder that it hasn't caught on in home decor as well. Be a trend-setter and apply this tried and true style statement to your home. You can choose a few of your favorite colors and use them in a number of accents. Throw pillows and rugs are an easy way to go and make boring rooms more colorful and energetic. Items like placemats and shower curtains are also fun and easy ways to spruce up your living space and give your home a harmonious theme without having to spend too much! Click on the slideshow for some great colorblock ideas that you can bring into your home!

Add Some Charm To Your Fall Kitchen With A Teapot!

Instead of waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, I like to pour myself a cup of hot tea and enjoy some buttered toast. Maybe I was British in a past life or maybe it's the fact that coffee has the opposite effect on me, but I do love tea. However, even the best tea leaves need to be brought to their full potential with piping hot water. That's why a whistling teakettle full of boiling water poured into a teapot with tea leaves--never tea bags--can be almost as relaxing as a day at a spa. If you still have an old one your mom passed onto you that's full of nicks and dents, it's high time for an upgrade. One of my favorite and affordable options is this classic stainless steel teakettle from World Market, a steal at less than $20. If you're looking to splurge, this teakettle designed by Frank Gehry for Alessi is a design snob's dream. I even found some electric kettles so you don't have to watch over the stove. And of course, these tea kettles can also be used to heat up water for your instant noodle cups. Check out my slideshow for more teakettles that will have you whistling while you work too!

Go Wild With Animal Prints For Your Home!

For my fall wardrobe, I've been looking to include animal prints whether it's a luxurious leopard print jacket or zebra print flats. However, these sultry prints can't stay confined to your closet! Your home can always use some animal prints. Thankfully, you don't need to go to a safari or harm any poor creatures to put some animal prints in your home. From your living room to the bathroom, you can easily add a touch of the wild side to every room. Take a look at these animal print chenille toss pillows. They're super soft, less than $20, and sure to liven up a plain sofa. Serve up a meal on zebra printed plates which are bound to make your regular meat and potatoes meal seem a bit more exciting than usual. Like a lot of other decadent things in life, animal prints should always be used in moderation. If not, then you run the risk of looking like Austin Powers decorated your pad. Take a peek at my slideshow to see how you can bring the animal kingdom into your home!

Transform Your Abode With Asian-Inspired Home Decor

There are many times in my life where I would love to get away from it all and go to an exotic Asian country to enjoy the beautiful sights and delicious food. So when I looked online for plane tickets, the four figured price tag promptly stopped my plans for the whirlwind vacation. While I can't afford to transport myself to another country, I can certainly transform my home to at least reflect my imaginary travels! Seeing a well decorated home with Asian-inspired objects makes me think the the owner is sophisticated and well traveled so what's not to like about that? You can start out small like this pagoda wine bottle stopper from Saks Fifth Avenue for a bit of Asian flair whenever you're entertaining. If you're looking for a total room makeover, add a koi rug. Now you can sit back, light some incense, and imagine yourself into another world. Click my slideshow to see more Asian-inspired goodies you can get without a plane ticket!

Bamboo Home Accessories That Are Stylish And Eco-Chic!

With all the talk these days about buying eco-friendly products made of materials such as bamboo, I decided to do some research. Turns out that bamboo reaches maturity in 3-5 years compared to 25-70 years for other trees. Bamboo is also renewable which means it will grow back after harvesting. So it's not just marketing hype after all! Bamboo products are everywhere and it's easy to decorate your hom,e from your living room to the kitchen, with bamboo! For the bathroom, I'm loving the bamboo bath accessories from Crate and Barrel. Did you know that bamboo fibers can also be woven into a gorgeous area rug? Remember, shopping for eco-friendly products means that you're doing your part in helping the environment. For more proof that being eco-friendly no longer means bland and boring, take a look at my slideshow for the latest bamboo products in home decor!

Clutter. Ugh. The word itself is enough to make me break out in a cold sweat. Nothing could be less stylish than stacks of stuff collecting dust all over your home sweet home -- unless, of course, you've managed to make all of your piles of books and shoes and magazines look like the intentional, boho-chic product of your eclectic, fabulous, too-busy-to-clean self. In which case, you're probably Mary-Kate Olsen and kudos to you for being not only stylishly messy but also crazy rich. For the rest of us, there's a wealth of hidden storage pieces out there perfectly suited to whisking our clutter out of eyesight. For six stylish de-cluttering options, check out my slideshow.
