Mid-century modernist egg-shaped Pokal.
This strange and beautiful wine glass is made of blue blown crystal and sports a cover to keep unwanted elements out. In antiquity, a covered chalice was called a 'Pokal'.
Old label still attached reads 'Made in Italy' with an image of a cocktail glass. We are unable to identify the label at this time, but are certain it dates from the late 1940s to late 1950s. Design and quality point to famous makers like Venini, Franco Pozzi, Joe Colombo, Moretti... Click here to read more about Italian made glass.
Thick crystal, varying in darkness of blue according to the thickness. The blue color resembles that of blueberries. Handblown in four parts. Foot is applied to the stem, stem applied to the bowl. Lid blown separately.
It's in excellent, original condition. No chips, no cracks, no liquid residue, appears unused. The artist left a few inclusions (small bumps within the glass, result of hand blowing). Only one is noticeable and you can see it in image 2, center of the lid.
To some it looks like an egg, to others it looks like a rocket. Weighs 1.2 lb. Measures 6.75' tall without the cover, 9' tall with the cover. retroartglass.com
