Vintage Fashionistas Get Chic In Caftans

    image
Mary Kincaid on Jun 19, 2009 8:17 AM PDT
It shouldn't be hard to believe that caftans originated back in 14th-century Persia as garments for men. After all, they're super comfy and men tend to value comfort over fashion. You don't see men teetering along on four-inch heels or squeezing themselves into vise-like undergarments. And while the identity of the first female to appropriate a caftan for herself is unknown, women everywhere should cheer for her courage to step outside the fashion box. Now commonly chosen as beach cover-ups or attire for pool parties, you shouldn't overlook the power of a caftan for an elegant evening, too. Try one with a few chunky bracelets, flat jeweled sandals, or a head scarf to add a bohemian feel. Click the slideshow to see a chic collection of vintage caftans that pack a powerful fashion punch.

Vintage Fashionistas Keep It Together With Separates

According to my completely unscientific poll, most fashionistas break out the vintage wear for evening. And that makes sense since anyone who follows celebrity fashion usually only gets to see their favorite stars wearing vintage on a red carpet. Who can forget Julia Roberts' stunning vintage Valentino the night she won her Oscar or Penelope Cruz accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a 1950s vintage Balmain masterpiece? Yes, vintage evening wear has tended to survive better through the decades than other pieces because formal affairs happen infrequently. But that doesn't mean that there aren't some plain ol' everyday vintage separates to be found. Check out this eclectic collection of tops and bottoms for vintage fashionistas. Vintage Fashionistas Are Walking On Sunshine!

By now you must know that yellow is THE color of the season. Fashion runways all over New York and Europe showed clothing and accessories in every shade from dandelion to canary, sunflower to goldenrod. And while Reese Witherspoon and Cate Blanchett have rocked stunning yellow dresses on the red carpet, most women I know still believe that yellow doesn't look good on them. Au contraire! Anyone can wear any color; it's just about picking the right shade to flatter your hair and skin tone. So while your brunette best friend might look great in a Crayola shade, if you're a fair-skinned blonde, you'll want to go a bit brighter. And if you're still feeling afraid to wear little ol' yellow, spice up your look with some sunshine-colored accessories or a print that has yellow as only one of its dominant hues. The slide show has loads of vintage finds to get you buttered up. Just click to see the selection!

You'll Be Green with Envy Over These Ten Vintage Finds!

Shakespeare described envy as "the green sickness" in Anthony And Cleopatra and mentions a "green-eyed monster" in Othello. And haven't we all been caught by the bug at one time or another? Maybe you were struck over a car, a home, a promotion, or even something as silly as a to-die-for dress. But have you tried wrapping yourself in green without the envy? Any one of these fabulous vintage finds is a fine way to wear the color of nature (and the color of money!). Not too fond of lime green? That doesn't mean you won't love something in fern, moss, or pine. Not ready to step out in green from head to toe? Try adding just a touch in a clutch, a pendant or earrings. Just click the slideshow and get inspired!
