James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in California in January 1948 and started the California Gold Rush that profoundly changed America. Now, with gold prices reaching record highs, many people are scrambling to cash in on a modern-day Gold Rush by selling their old gold jewelry. But consumers should beware. Gold-buying scams are rampant, and, according to the BBB, some of the worst offenders are the companies advertising on late-night cable television. So take the time to read these tips before you join in the stampede. And of course, not everyone is selling. If you're a fashionista, you can invest in gold for a fraction of the price charged by the US mint. Today's modern woman thinks nothing of blow-drying her short hair, slipping into a skirt and blouse, driving to work and then heading out for a cocktail at the end of the day. But all these things wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the rebellion of the young ladies of the 1920s known as Flappers. These women--gasp!--showed their knees, exercised their independence, embraced their sexuality and did it all with style. Their unusual habit of walking around with their galoshes unfastened, making "flapper" sounds, lent them their name and fortunately they left behind some real gems for today's vintage fashionistas. You may remember from elementary school history that Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the globe and it was quite the feat. He started his voyage with 280 men and five ships on September 1519 and arrived back in port almost three years later with only one ship and 18 crew members remaining. But does anyone know the name of the first woman to circumnavigate the globe? That distinction belongs to Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, who completed her journey in 1976 in only 401 days. Oh, and she did it solo! Of course, not all of us have the drive for adventure and the bravery required for such daring-do. But if you don't see a personal yacht in your future, don't despair. You can still embrace the spirit of sailing with these nifty nautical finds. Just click the slideshow to see the selection!

Diamonds may be forever but it could take what seems like forever before you can save enough to splurge on them, especially in today's economy. And with gold prices in the stratosphere, what's a fashionista to do? Turn to vintage costume jewelry! Instead of spending money on new clothes this season, why not try adding a handful of unique vintage jewelry pieces to punch up the items already hanging in your closet? By choosing rhinestones over diamonds, baked enamel over turquoise, and semi-precious stones over precious stones, you can razzle and dazzle on a much lower budget without sacrificing an ounce of style. Plus, if you select wisely, you might even see a 10-15% gain in value as the years pass by. Just click the slideshow for a hand-picked selection of great vintage costume jewelry choices.

Recycling just got much more chic with Double K Jewelry! The line started when designer Kelleigh Kincaid was looking for some jewelry pieces that had a more personal touch and a tad more soul than what she could find in stores. Inspired by ages past, she draws on the art nouveau movement and the turn of the century for inspiration in creating her interesting pieces. Her ideas aren't the only thing that comes from the past, however; the necklaces and earrings are created using vintage and recycled items that are reworked into modern day wearable pieces. The Spring 2009 "Maltese Falcon" collection was inspired by the glamour of 1920s San Francisco. Vintage deco pendants, oxidized chains, and even vintage clock parts become long necklaces perfect for layering and pairing with delicate pendant earrings. Not only is the line eco-friendly and recycled, the designer also pledges to donate 10% of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Check out the slideshow to see some of my personal favorite styles, then take a look at their website DoubleKJewelry.com for a complete store listing!

The name Henrietta means "queen" or "ruler," and Henrietta Kanengeiser was an undisputed Queen in the fashion world. Don't recognize the name? Probably because you know her better as late designer extraordinaire Hattie Carnegie. She changed her surname from Kanengeiser to honor her mentor, Andrew Carnegie, and she obtained her nickname at 16 while making hats at Macy's Department Store, hence "Hattie." While she was a fashion power house in the 1930s through the 1950s, heading an operation that employed over 1,000 workers and did millions of dollars of business at a time when most women were homemakers, she also designed amazing costume jewelry to complement her clothing.
