Vintage Fashionistas Savor Gray This Season!

    image
Mary Kincaid on Nov 20, 2009 8:18 AM PST
When searching for vintage clothing online, it's important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you're looking for something gray, because well, there's gray (the American spelling) and then there's grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines. If you do, you'll be rewarded with a smorgasbord of vintage treats in this classic, conservative neutral. Try substituting darker charcoal shades of gray for black. Or choose pale shades of gray to take the place of white. Morning, noon or night, for dresses, coats or evening gowns, gray is a fabulous wardrobe choice for a vintage fashionista. Sure, retro "gadgets" may look cool in a stylishly old-fashioned sort of way, but when it comes to actually using them, our geeky reliance on modern-day tech has us too cyber-spoiled and impatient to put any effort in something that can't keep up with our 3G speediness. The solution? A techie piece of equipment that just looks vintage, but packs all the convenient specs and capabilities of the most recent releases in the gadget world. The Revo Heritage Table Radio has the 60s-style walnut veneer surface, but boasts some seriously modern features in that retro-looking package: an iPod dock, WiFi for all your favorite internet stations, wireless streaming from your laptop, a remote control for maximum laziness, and even an alarm clock in case you doze off while listening to your tunes. It's the perfect device for the music lover who may have an old soul... but secretly can't live without a healthy dose of modern tech!

Fabulous Flapper Fashions For Vintage Fashionistas

    image

Today's modern woman thinks nothing of blow-drying her short hair, slipping into a skirt and blouse, driving to work and then heading out for a cocktail at the end of the day. But all these things wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the rebellion of the young ladies of the 1920s known as Flappers. These women--gasp!--showed their knees, exercised their independence, embraced their sexuality and did it all with style. Their unusual habit of walking around with their galoshes unfastened, making "flapper" sounds, lent them their name and fortunately they left behind some real gems for today's vintage fashionistas. Designer to Watch: Dorothy Lee's Clean Lines and Simple ...

Give me deconstructed layers with feminine tailoring, in colors reminiscent of a coming-of-age Sofia Coppola film, and I am in heaven! You'll be sitting - or standing, or reclining - pretty in just about anything from Dorothy Lee. I would expect nothing less than greatness from her after studying at Parsons and Central St. Martins and interning for Chanel and Peter Som. Dorothy Lee presents a line of contradictions, with their girly yet ladylike silhouettes, where clean lines and simple shapes meet intricate detailing. Her relaxed, whimsical creations are the epitome of effortless chic, they have a throw-it-on-and-go quality that makes them this seasons wardrobe staple. Check out my slideshow for 10 of her prettiest looks.
