Vintage Fashionistas Cheer For Pink And Orange!

    image

You don't need to be a genius to determine that I am not a big fan of pink, based on a quick peek into my closet. Or orange, for that matter. So it's hard for me to explain why I squeal with delight when I see these two colors together. I guess sometimes what seems like two fashion wrongs can actually make a big fashion right! And lots of folks agree. Like Jonathan Adler, for instance, who believes there's no better way to banish the blues than with this bright color combination. Or Alexander Girard and so many other designers in the 1960s who married these two tangy shades in home decor and advertising as well as in fashion. Today's slideshow features some outstanding vintage examples of this zesty color pairing, which is like putting on an instant good mood (or enjoying a nice big scoop of rainbow sherbet). Who can possibly stay dreary while wearing something this bright and cheery? Click the slideshow to get inspired!

Vintage Fashionistas Embrace "Mad Men" Style

Once upon a time, women sat around on Sunday nights sipping cocktails and tuning in to their favorite fashion friends on Sex and the City. But whether you were more of a Samantha or a Carrie type doesn't matter anymore because there's a whole new gang of girls in town. The new fashionistas to watch are the girls of the hit series Mad Men. The buxom Joan Holloway, the poised Betty Draper, and the spunky Peggy Olsen don't just entertain us but allow us to feast our eyes on the fabulous designs of yesteryear, coordinated by the show's talented costume designer, Janie Bryant. Pair the dresses walking down the halls of Sterling Cooper with period pumps and handbags and you'll look a bit dated, but it's easy to glam them up 2009-style with tights, belted cardigans or ankle boots. Now just click the slideshow for some vintage delights for Mad Men fans.

Canadian Designer Valerie Dumaine Modernizes The Classics

Personally, I'm so excited that "Mad Men" has started up again. Aside from the great plotlines, the show acts as a beautiful reminder of what I love about vintage dresses -- the idea that we should dress for every occasion. Okay, I realize that it's just a TV show, but my grandmother would say that it's how she lived her life -- in style. Maybe it runs in the family. Anyway, as much as I like vintage dresses, sometimes I want the modern equivalent: sexy, well-presented, yet with immaculate details. Montreal-based designer Valerie Dumaine perfectly quenches these cravings, with mid-century silhouettes with shorter hemlines and contemporary elements. Her new fall collection is available now, and with price points in the $125-$150 (US) range, you get unique dresses with a vintage modern twist. My favorites are the Cairo Tulip Dress, the Ines Pencil Skirt, and the Jean Pencil Dress! Once you're done browsing, don't forget to head over to The Coveted for more vintage fashion done modern!

Vintage Fashionistas Seize The Day In Sequins

'Tis the season for sequins! These little dazzlers aren't just for evening or holidays anymore. They're popping up everywhere for fall and yes, they can absolutely be worn during the day. But to avoid looking like a Las Vegas showgirl, you might want to keep a few tips in mind. First, dress 'em down. Make one sparkly item your focal point. Think a sequin vest with jeans and a tee or a sequin cardigan with a tank. Then choose matte accessories. Sequins add enough shimmer and shine to an outfit so pick boots, bracelets and bags with a flat finish. And finally, keep shapes uncomplicated. For day, sequins work best on simple shapes like classic tees and shifts. Now just click the slideshow for a dazzling array of fabulous vintage sequin finds!

Vintage Fashionistas Pay Tribute To The Queen Of Swimwear

Rose Marie Reid was the Queen of Swimwear in the 1950s, ruling an empire that produced 10,000 suits a day and posted sales of $14 million by 1958! Women loved her knack for hiding figure flaws and it was Rose Marie Reid who pioneered the use of tummy control panels, wire bra cups and the boning and adjustable straps that we enjoy in modern swimwear today. Plus she was a woman who stood by her convictions. Because she was Mormon, she refused to design immodest bathing suits. So while her company did ultimately create bikinis, Rose Marie Reid refused to participate in their design. For vintage fashionistas, an early authentic Rose Marie Reid swimsuit is a coveted find. March On With Our Top 5 Favorite Marching Band Jackets!

What do Jimi Hendrix, Christophe Decarnin of Balmain and Sienna Miller all have in common? They all love marching band style jackets! Beyonce and Rihanna have been spotted in the amazing (and very pricey) Balmain version and Sienna looked retro-cool in her Temperley London version. Finding an authentic vintage band jacket is hard to do, and sometimes the fit is less than flattering. Good thing designers have been turning out more modern and contemporary versions! Go subtle with some slight button or double-breasted detail, or go all out with some major gold trim and adornments. If you want to be truly authentic, check out Nasty Gal for a few great vintage styles. Check out the slideshow for our 5 favorite jackets that will keep you marching all fall long!
