Vintage Fashionistas Cheer For Pink And Orange!

You don't need to be a genius to determine that I am not a big fan of pink, based on a quick peek into my closet. Or orange, for that matter. So it's hard for me to explain why I squeal with delight when I see these two colors together. I guess sometimes what seems like two fashion wrongs can actually make a big fashion right! And lots of folks agree. Like Jonathan Adler, for instance, who believes there's no better way to banish the blues than with this bright color combination. Or Alexander Girard and so many other designers in the 1960s who married these two tangy shades in home decor and advertising as well as in fashion. Today's slideshow features some outstanding vintage examples of this zesty color pairing, which is like putting on an instant good mood (or enjoying a nice big scoop of rainbow sherbet). Who can possibly stay dreary while wearing something this bright and cheery? Click the slideshow to get inspired!

Vintage Fashionistas Embrace "Mad Men" Style

Once upon a time, women sat around on Sunday nights sipping cocktails and tuning in to their favorite fashion friends on Sex and the City. But whether you were more of a Samantha or a Carrie type doesn't matter anymore because there's a whole new gang of girls in town. The new fashionistas to watch are the girls of the hit series Mad Men. The buxom Joan Holloway, the poised Betty Draper, and the spunky Peggy Olsen don't just entertain us but allow us to feast our eyes on the fabulous designs of yesteryear, coordinated by the show's talented costume designer, Janie Bryant. Pair the dresses walking down the halls of Sterling Cooper with period pumps and handbags and you'll look a bit dated, but it's easy to glam them up 2009-style with tights, belted cardigans or ankle boots. Now just click the slideshow for some vintage delights for Mad Men fans.

Canadian Designer Valerie Dumaine Modernizes The Classics

Personally, I'm so excited that "Mad Men" has started up again. Aside from the great plotlines, the show acts as a beautiful reminder of what I love about vintage dresses -- the idea that we should dress for every occasion. Okay, I realize that it's just a TV show, but my grandmother would say that it's how she lived her life -- in style. Maybe it runs in the family. Anyway, as much as I like vintage dresses, sometimes I want the modern equivalent: sexy, well-presented, yet with immaculate details. Montreal-based designer Valerie Dumaine perfectly quenches these cravings, with mid-century silhouettes with shorter hemlines and contemporary elements. Her new fall collection is available now, and with price points in the $125-$150 (US) range, you get unique dresses with a vintage modern twist. My favorites are the Cairo Tulip Dress, the Ines Pencil Skirt, and the Jean Pencil Dress! Once you're done browsing, don't forget to head over to The Coveted for more vintage fashion done modern!

Summer To Fall Finds for Vintage Fashionistas!

When the sun's blazing and the air conditioner's blasting, lightweight summer sundresses hold great appeal. But if you can wrench your thoughts away from staying cool long enough to look at a calendar, you'll realize that Labor Day and back to school are just a few weeks away. And that means falling leaves and cooler temperatures won't be far behind. So while you're enjoying the remaining dog days of summer, you may want to trade your sun visor for a proverbial Fall thinking cap. Using your imagination, and a few layering devices like leggings, cardigans, long-sleeve tees and turtlenecks, you can easily transform summer dresses into go-to fall frocks. Beautiful Pierre Cardin Creations for Vintage Fashionistas

When Pierre Cardin tried to make designer clothing more accessible for women by producing a ready-to-wear line in 1959, he created quite the scandal and was expelled from the Chambre Syndicale. But he didn't let the ire of those haute couture folks stop him! No, he continued to produce designs that were innovative and futuristic. And what gal wouldn't lust after his 1968 crepe evening gown with the built-in sculpted silver necklace and its $60,000 diamond! Cardin's work from the 1960s and 1970s captured his trademark minimalism, use of geometric shapes and exquisite tailoring and iconic pieces from these collections are still highly sought after by today's vintage fashionistas. Fabulous Flapper Fashions For Vintage Fashionistas

    image

Today's modern woman thinks nothing of blow-drying her short hair, slipping into a skirt and blouse, driving to work and then heading out for a cocktail at the end of the day. But all these things wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the rebellion of the young ladies of the 1920s known as Flappers. These women--gasp!--showed their knees, exercised their independence, embraced their sexuality and did it all with style. Their unusual habit of walking around with their galoshes unfastened, making "flapper" sounds, lent them their name and fortunately they left behind some real gems for today's vintage fashionistas.
