Get Physical In Fall's Gym-Inspired Looks

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Sep 4, 2009 12:19 PM PDT
You don't have to run marathons or have a relationship with the Stairmaster to appreciate fall's athletic-inspired looks. Just look at Isabel Marant's fall '09 runway, where sweatshirt tees go from gym to glam when paired with layered skirts and embellished ankle boots. Alexander Wang has been taking sweatpants out of the gym for a few seasons now, and given their slouchy, not sloppy cut, they could almost pass as dress pants if worn with heels and a blazer- just don't tell your boss you slept in them the night before. On a budget? American Eagle and Free People can hook you up without the pricey membership. The key is to look for pieces with unexpectedly luxe touches (like cashmere or sequins), or pair casual ones with something more polished- in other words, leave the sneakers at home. Style Essentials: Our Top Ten Comfortable And Stylish Cardigans

    image
Anna Yu on Apr 15, 2009 10:17 AM PDT
If you were to send me off to a desert island and only allowed me to bring 5 pieces of clothing, one of those items would definitely be a cardigan. At any given moment you can find me wearing a cardigan while eating brunch with friends, running errands around town, or even going out dancing. It's one of the most versatile pieces of clothing a person can have! It's great in wintertime for some serious cold weather layering or wear it as a light jacket in the warmer months. There are lots of cardigan styles out there and while all of them would look good with jeans and a t-shirt (then again, what doesn't look good with jeans?), some may look funny if you pair it with a dress. I know I'm not alone in loving cardigans. As the press is going wild over Michelle Obama and her clothing choices, one of her style signatures is a cardigan. Whether she's wearing one over a sheath dress or slacks, she always manages to look fabulous. What's her secret? It's all about the proportions and how clothing falls on the curves of your body. That means you should always buy something that fits you and not the mannequin! Keep reading for a taste of our top 10 cardigan styles and how to wear them, and be sure to check out the slideshow for more ideas.

Style Essentials: Our Top Ten Must-Have T-Shirts!

    image

Ask anyone what they have the most in their wardrobe (besides underwear and socks), the answer is most likely t-shirts. I recently made an inventory of my closet, and let's just say that I don't need to buy anymore t-shirts for a long time. Just why are t-shirts so popular? They come in all colors, styles, and fabrics from cotton jersey to bamboo. You can also find t-shirts from a variety of price points. Some can be over $100 while others can be less than your regular cup of coffee (hello, Hanes!). Most importantly of all, they're comfortable! A lot of times, comfort doesn't always see eye-to-eye with stylish, but I like to think of t-shirts as a blank slate. Pair a t-shirt and jeans for your everyday errands or tuck the shirt into a high-waisted skirt, add some chunky jewelry and you're ready for a night out on the town. Here's my list of top essential t-shirt styles everyone should have in their closet.

    1. The classic crew neck: definitely a basic staple. These are the best to wear to the gym or even to work if it's a super casual office.
    2. A V-neck tee: it can bare a little more skin than crew neck shirts. I like to wear them with necklaces that rest just by the hollow of the neck.
    3. A pocket t-shirt: these have a casual menswear feel, perfect for brunch with your best friends or a lazy day at the park.

Recession Chic: Stylish And Classic Trench Coats At Every Price

    image
Anna Yu on Mar 18, 2009 7:22 AM PDT
Anyone who knows me personally knows that I love my basics. From simple and well-cut t-shirts to ballet flats in every color, I own them all. In today's economy, this is actually one of the best times to buy high quality basics because retailers are more likely to sell clothes people would actually buy and wear. Which leads me to a almost year round staple-- the trench coat. From modern day celebs like Katie Holmes and Hayden Panettiere to icons such as Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn (remember her trench at the end of Breakfast at Tiffany's?), the trench coat is everywhere and a must have in any modern woman's closet. Trench coats are available in a multitude of lengths and colors, but I decided to feature the ever classic khaki. Take a look at the double-breasted trench by Burberry, the originators in trench coats. Can't afford the nearly $1000 price tag? I've found 5 stylin' trench coats under $100 perfect for the spring. Curious? Click the slideshow to see them all!

Elle's Fall A To Zee Trends: Tied Up

Feel like your style's coming undone? Tie one of these on for size- I'm talking about bows, of course. From cute to chic, the knotted accents span the entire style spectrum and have been finding their way onto blouses, bags, and even boots! The epitome of charm and innocence, a bow is a no-frills way to add femininity to your favorite looks. Claim that boyfriend cardigan for good with Vince's slouchy bow sweater, or tame a seductive boot with Moschino's bow-adorned pair. And who says demure and dramatic can't be found in the same frock? Zac Posen's form-fitting number lends the prime example. Go to Elle's Fall A to Zee Trends to see Joe Zee's picks, and click on our slideshow for our favorite bow-embellished looks.

Hive 5: Groovy Ombre Fashion Is Everywhere, Man!

    image

Distant cousin to the dreaded tie-dye, ombré is the best of both the carefree and the style-conscious worlds. Personally, I love the option of having multiple colors that don't necessarily come from the same palate, and being able wear them without looking like Rainbow Brite, not to mention the eye-catching, slimming and enhancing effect on one's figure! With all of the benefits, one would think that such a gentle gradient of color could only belong on a yoga master or hippie, but ombré can be found on Prada bags, sweaters, bathing suits, and a variety of dresses galore. Click on the SLIDESHOW and let ombré change your life!
