Canadian Designer Valerie Dumaine Modernizes The Classics

Personally, I'm so excited that "Mad Men" has started up again. Aside from the great plotlines, the show acts as a beautiful reminder of what I love about vintage dresses -- the idea that we should dress for every occasion. Okay, I realize that it's just a TV show, but my grandmother would say that it's how she lived her life -- in style. Maybe it runs in the family. Anyway, as much as I like vintage dresses, sometimes I want the modern equivalent: sexy, well-presented, yet with immaculate details. Montreal-based designer Valerie Dumaine perfectly quenches these cravings, with mid-century silhouettes with shorter hemlines and contemporary elements. Her new fall collection is available now, and with price points in the $125-$150 (US) range, you get unique dresses with a vintage modern twist. My favorites are the Cairo Tulip Dress, the Ines Pencil Skirt, and the Jean Pencil Dress! Once you're done browsing, don't forget to head over to The Coveted for more vintage fashion done modern!

Indie Designer Valerie Dumaine Brings Fashion-Forward Looks ...

I have to say, Montreal has really been on the mark over the last couple of years when it comes to fashion and style. As a long time supporter of indie fashion in Canada, I've been noticing a lot of confident new designers launching their fashion-forward clothing companies from this city. Indie trends in fashion are on the upswing, and Montreal fashion designers are at the top of it all! Valerie Dumaine Clothing is a perfect example. Dumaine launched her company in 2004 and it's been an amazing success story that should motivate aspiring fashion designers. Her collections are entirely made in Canada and are now available across Canada and in a few stores in the United States. Indie designers are good to have around-- they're very passionate about what they do. Like Dumaine, many small designers are putting more back into their community by using an artistic approach to the clothing trade, rather than acting as a large profit driven company. I am happy to introduce 10 items from the Valerie Dumaine Fall 2008 line in my slideshow. Enjoy!

Hive 5: Adorable and Affordable Leather Apparel For Fall

If you have seen any of this current Project Runway season, then you are surely familiar with Stella: the feisty former makeup artist from Queens who is obsessed with anything and everything relating to leather and rock and roll. Although I have previously questioned Stella's taste, I am beginning to think that maybe she is on to something. After all, leather seems to be the material du jour this fall. Designers are already making a statement by using it on everything from curve-hugging leggings and skirts, to shrunken moto jackets and hip 80's-inspired gloves. Leather has always been considered somewhat of a staple material, but this fall it's definitely a star! So how can you add some leather to your wardrobe without looking like Catwoman and breaking the bank? Well, the Hive has the answer! Check out my SLIDESHOW for five adorable and affordable leather (and leather-like) pieces for fall.
