Do Dad A Favor This Father's Day With Stress-Free Clothing Gifts

    image

We all know that generally speaking, men hate shopping. Although it would probably be a useful excuse to say that your addictive shopaholic nature comes from fierce bargain-hunting genes from both your parents, realistically your dad would probably rather be watching TV than trying on clothes in the dressing room. So while shopping-savvy gals like you or your mom might be insulted by seemingly obvious or "no-brainer" gifts like dress shirts or tube socks, you might be surprised to find out that when your dad says he needs practical gifts like clothes, he really means it. Forget that expensive newfangled GPS ('cause he'll never even read the directions to assemble it anyway) and think of all the time, boredom, and moaning and groaning you'll spare your dad by going out and doing his clothing shopping for him. By sticking to practical yet stylish gifts like a lightweight zip-up jacket, button-down striped shirts and sleek ties (after all, nothing says Father's Day like ties!), you'll be playing it safe in a good way by sticking to things you know Dad will actually wear and get good use out of. Check the slideshow for some easy-to-buy clothing picks that will keep your dad dressed to impress without him having to set foot in the hellish mall!

How To Make A Top From Your Dad's Old Silk Ties

    image

Jennifer Stern is a contributor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to do-it-yourself art and design projects. Below she shares how you can turn Dad's old duds into a flowy new top for yourself!

I have a pile of old ties that my dad cast off to me-- it turned out to be a treasure trove of silk fabric! I decided to embark on a design adventure; I wanted to make something out of them that didn't have the "this was made from men's silk ties" look. I took advantage of the fact that neckties are cut on the bias and used them to make a top with a little flutter. After choosing seven or eight ties from the pile, I took them apart. Then I draped them on my dress form. As I played with them, I ended up using two ties over each shoulder, joining them in the center front and back. This created a graceful V-neck. The ties closest to the shoulders created a fluttery cap sleeve. I joined the front and back with a tie on each side, finishing the armholes at the same time! After I finished draping and sewing, I stood back to evaluate the design-- it looked like a top that was made from ties! The telltale prints and colors combined with the pointed tips at the hem were a dead giveaway. I have to admit, it was pretty interesting with the ready-made "handkerchief" hem, but keeping with my original goal, I chopped off the points at the ends of the ties to straighten out the hem. With the weight of the lined points gone, the result was a graceful draping top...I love it!

Hive 5: Paisley Gets Off The Couch

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jul 31, 2008 7:07 PM PDT
I was pretty surprised to read that paisley had made its way back into all that is trendy and good-- after all, wasn't it just yesterday that the swirly print was relegated to men's ties and upholstery? I guess some things do change because paisley has finally gotten up off the couch, dusted off the dull colors, and made a pretty cute comeback onto dresses, swimsuits, and even bangle bracelets! I'd imagine the print would be perfect for scarves and headbands as well, especially if you're unsure about rocking it head to toe, but if you want to go all out, we suggest Matthew Williamson's bold number-- though our slideshow is full of more affordable ways to get the look if shelling out two months' rent on a trend that could be over before then just isn't your thing.
