    The Bowtie Is Back!

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jul 1, 2009 8:19 AM PDT
Are bowties ready for a comeback? I sure hope so! No longer reserved for nerds at prom and Bill Nye the Science Guy, bowties have started popping up here and there. But are they prime for a big return or will it just be a flash-in-the-pan trend like the brief resurgence of men's short shorts? From hipster to hip-hop and all the way uptown to"Gossip Girl" territory, there's no denying that the trend is starting to build. Karl Lagerfeld has been spotted wearing a simple black silk bowtie for some time and Kanye West is rocking them in his sneak peak at his new clothing line Pastelle. Forgotten by fashion and relegated to dweeb territory for years, today's bowtie has a nostalgic kitschy feel that's fresh and new. Ready to jump on this trend? Check out the slideshow for some favorites. Not sure how to even tie a bowtie? Click "See Video" to watch Avvi66's YouTube video, "How to Tie a Bowtie" for a step-by-step how-to.

Get Crafty For Father's Day And Make a Gadget Case

Below, she shares a fun how-to on taking an old tie and making it into a gadget case! Father's Day is coming up right around the corner and who need another cheesy Father's Day gift? Nevertheless another tie? Why not make your hubby a father's day gift this year he can use. Let's admit it; most men nowadays have a cell phone, camera, iPod that they are using. They may also have a lot of ties kicking around. So instead of buying yet another tie for father's day this year, why not refashion one he doesn't wear anymore? What's great is this project involves only a little bit of sewing, some fun seam ripping (the kids love this) and dad can use it as a functioning gift. You're helping the environment by reusing and refashioning an article of clothing in your home and also being easy on your wallet. How To Make A Top From Your Dad's Old Silk Ties

    image

Jennifer Stern is a contributor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to do-it-yourself art and design projects. Below she shares how you can turn Dad's old duds into a flowy new top for yourself!

I have a pile of old ties that my dad cast off to me-- it turned out to be a treasure trove of silk fabric! I decided to embark on a design adventure; I wanted to make something out of them that didn't have the "this was made from men's silk ties" look. I took advantage of the fact that neckties are cut on the bias and used them to make a top with a little flutter. After choosing seven or eight ties from the pile, I took them apart. Then I draped them on my dress form. As I played with them, I ended up using two ties over each shoulder, joining them in the center front and back. This created a graceful V-neck. The ties closest to the shoulders created a fluttery cap sleeve. I joined the front and back with a tie on each side, finishing the armholes at the same time! After I finished draping and sewing, I stood back to evaluate the design-- it looked like a top that was made from ties! The telltale prints and colors combined with the pointed tips at the hem were a dead giveaway. I have to admit, it was pretty interesting with the ready-made "handkerchief" hem, but keeping with my original goal, I chopped off the points at the ends of the ties to straighten out the hem. With the weight of the lined points gone, the result was a graceful draping top...I love it!

Don't Be Afraid To Pop Those Colors!

    image
    Dino-Ray Ramos on Apr 4, 2009 9:24 AM PDT
We've already gone over neutral colors, but what about those colors that pop and have vivid personality? Bold colors like blue, red, yellow and their vibrant counterparts add character to a man€™s outfit when used wisely. I know there are many men who are afraid of color, mainly because they don€™t want to compromise their masculinity. It takes someone like Kanye West to make it cool to wear pink polos. Nonetheless, guys shouldn't dive in head first when dabbling in electrifying colors. For novices, I recommend going for neckwear like the Prada paprika tie or the Polo Ralph Lauren navy regimental stripe tie that jumps off your chest with dapper charm. When you are ready to get more sartorially savvy, don a Ralph Lauren cashmere V-neck or look like a ray of handsome sunlight with the BR Monogram silk/cashmere cardigan. And when you're feeling even more ambitious, slip into a pair of Gucci jeans in orange-- but be very cautious when choosing pants in Crayola colors. Do what works for you and don't do it just because you saw an emo rocker wearing them. Check out some of these colored confections in the slideshow.

Cold Feet? Try A Chilly Weather Wedding Wrap!

    image
Amber Fijolek on Mar 18, 2009 1:24 PM PDT
The last thing you'll want on your wedding day is to be cold, so if you're tying the knot in fall, winter or spring, you may want a nice, warm compliment to your gown. It's true that you'll want to flaunt your lavishly conditioned skin and hot bod that you've been working on during your pre-nuptial planning, so your gown may be missing a few pieces here and there -- probably in vulnerable areas such as the neck, back and shoulders. Depending on how harsh your location will be, someone's thought of something to make the temperature of your big day an afterthought. In lace or feather, there's a shrug, wrap or jacket for any weather. See the slideshow for some of our favorite picks!
