Vintage Fashionistas Pay Tribute To The Queen Of Swimwear

    image
Mary Kincaid on Aug 14, 2009 8:24 AM PDT
Rose Marie Reid was the Queen of Swimwear in the 1950s, ruling an empire that produced 10,000 suits a day and posted sales of $14 million by 1958! Women loved her knack for hiding figure flaws and it was Rose Marie Reid who pioneered the use of tummy control panels, wire bra cups and the boning and adjustable straps that we enjoy in modern swimwear today. Plus she was a woman who stood by her convictions. Because she was Mormon, she refused to design immodest bathing suits. So while her company did ultimately create bikinis, Rose Marie Reid refused to participate in their design. For vintage fashionistas, an early authentic Rose Marie Reid swimsuit is a coveted find. Summer is the perfect season to show off sweet and sexy styles and what better way to do it than in a Poko Pano swimsuit! At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM in Miami, Poko Pano showcased their slightly whimsical, borderline quirky and definitely provocative line of swim and beachwear. From light, bright colors perfect for a sunny day to patterns like fun florals and pretty polka-dots, Poko Pano promised a fun-in-the-sun feel to their daring bikinis and monokinis. Strapless tops and plunging halters oozed feminine sensuality while interesting details and deliberate mixing and matching made each piece unique and eye-catching! Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Cia Maritima

Well, if someone's gotta bring the Latin flavor to the Mercedes Benz SWIM runway, it might as well be Brazilian beachwear designer Cia.Maritima! The show started off relatively slow, giving us a glimpse of some undoubtedly unique watercolor animal prints that put a soft spin on a traditionally wild design. Things slowly began to simmer with the introduction of boldly printed string bikinis and then reached an eventual boiling point with the parade of dare-to-bare cutout bikinis and structured monokinis that left everyone feeling hot, hot, hot! It wasn't all about the skin-baring ensembles though- the designer wowed with an impressive array of sheer and Grecian-inspired caftans and cover ups, and the details weren't to be missed either- the bold cuffs and strappy arm embellishments were just as alluring. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Red Carter

A swimsuit is a swimsuit is a swimsuit, right? Not if it's a Red Carter design! They challenge your idea of a conventional one-piece or bikini and have you lusting after the interesting and daring details of their suits. Red Carter isn't tentative or apologetic about their extreme and avant-garde outlook. There are, of course, colorful and lively patterns that stimulate the eye, but it is the space-age metallic leggings or edgy hardware that garner the most attention. It's the optical illusion patterns and the oversized, brightly colored, Lolita-like details that make you sit up a little straighter and stare a little longer. The strapless tops and wild animal prints earned more than a few double-takes... and possibly neck injuries! Beach coverings were elegant and luxurious. Men in speedos and barely-there briefs have never been my thing, but if all men looked like the male models did in Red Carter's bold and edgy "trunks," then I may just have to rethink my stance!
