Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Red Carter

A swimsuit is a swimsuit is a swimsuit, right? Not if it's a Red Carter design! They challenge your idea of a conventional one-piece or bikini and have you lusting after the interesting and daring details of their suits. Red Carter isn't tentative or apologetic about their extreme and avant-garde outlook. There are, of course, colorful and lively patterns that stimulate the eye, but it is the space-age metallic leggings or edgy hardware that garner the most attention. It's the optical illusion patterns and the oversized, brightly colored, Lolita-like details that make you sit up a little straighter and stare a little longer. The strapless tops and wild animal prints earned more than a few double-takes... and possibly neck injuries! Beach coverings were elegant and luxurious. Men in speedos and barely-there briefs have never been my thing, but if all men looked like the male models did in Red Carter's bold and edgy "trunks," then I may just have to rethink my stance! Kick It Back, Boys, In The Season's Hottest Swimwear

Beach season doesn't just give girls an excuse to indulge in the hottest swimwear picks; this season, men have got every reason to put some cash down on a closet-ful of summer swim shorts! Bold colors are best, and a print of some kind, be it plaid or flowery, is most flattering if found in design patterns that are a tad more intricate -- the big white hibiscus shapes on the plain-colored-background long board shorts were a hit back in the day, but this summer, that same suit has been brought to a new loudmouthed level. Sure, you may just be hot enough not to need to draw attention to your built bod, but make 'em look twice with the picks in my slideshow!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Diesel

When it comes to fashion, summer conjures up one thought and one thought only: swimwear! This year, Diesel came through with contrasting colors and daring silhouettes at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week swimwear runway shows, fittingly held in Miami. Always known for their industrialized and city chic style, Diesel presented a swimwear collection that was exciting, sexy and right on with their brand image. Classic black and white was made edgy and pop colors included vibrant, sensual red and icy-cold metallics. Besides the regular length board shorts, there were trunks that would be better classified as briefs, and not swimwear, in bright blues, shocking reds and funky patterns. Definitely for the confident beach-goer! Aside from the blazing bikinis and boxer brief trunks, Diesel also presented some casual beach coverings for those who want to show a little modesty. Models with football shoulder pads and sporty knee socks paraded down the catwalk, but it was the luxuriously laid-back look of shirts, pants and dresses that caught the eye. Simple silhouettes were made edgy with added details and interesting fabrics. The sack dress cover-up had a nonchalantly chic style that could work for evenings on the beach, or for a night out with some rocker-style accessories. Loose fitted tops and stark white skinny jeans gave the men an air of European sex appeal. A personal favorite off the Diesel swim runway? The overall-inspired, olive green one-piece, a totally original idea that's sexy yet demure and would look amazing under a pair of white shorts! Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Tommy Bahama

Summer is all about resorts and relaxation. Borrowing from this mind-set, Tommy Bahama introduced their latest collection of luxury resort and swimwear. Tommy Bahama has long been a leader in high-end cruise and resort wear, known for their pretty prints of tropical foliage and classic and elegant lines and silhouettes. The prints were a little less fun-in-the-sun and a little more sleek and sophisticated (which I think works better), but still featured the signature tropical plant patterns. Shadows of palm leaves and bunches of wild flowers were showcased on bikinis, maxi-dresses and flowing tops. Colors were rich and fun, but not acid or overly bright. Sherbet orange, ocean blue and jewel-toned fuschia were mixed in with basic black and white and other neutral tones. The swimsuits and resort wear for women featured halter necks and tube-tops or loose, flowing tops and dresses and were sexy without showing too much, making them appropriate for those looking for a little more coverage. The menswear featured classic cuts and lengths in their shirts and trunks, made more interesting with fun colors and trendy gradient prints. Topping off the look for both sexes were wide-brimmed, floppy sun hats that only added to the feel of laid-back luxury and effortless resort chic.
