New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Tibi

If Alice in Wonderland grew up, moved to New York and became a seriously stylish fashionista, her wardrobe would most likely look a lot like the runway collection that Tibi presented at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week It looks like color-blocking and saturated hues are still in for Spring/Summer 2010, but with an eclectic twist. Colors that before would be marked as "horribly mismatched" (powdered rose and bright blue or pink and red) lived harmoniously together on breezy dresses and jumpsuits, loosely draped tops and short shorts. Sunshine yellow, coral pinks and simply sophisticated white, as well as pretty floral cut-outs added to the whimsically happy and bubbly bright colors that give the collection a feel of a sweet and candy-coated childhood. The silhouettes, however, remained very grown up with decolletage-baring tanks and tops, high hemlines that flirted with toned thighs, and sensual one-shoulder looks emphasizing the cinched waist. New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer: Rag & Bone

    image

Marcus Wainwright and David Neville have been described as "an English hip, young Ralph Lauren" by no less an authority than Vogue's Anna Wintour. Their Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2010 collection for their label, Rag & Bone, was shown last Friday to an audience full of appreciative fans. Structured jackets took pride of place in Friday's show, and they were shown in all lengths and styles, from military influenced to frock coats. The color palette of the collection was decidedly muted, with creams, olives, and chambray-like blues. Other than the jackets, the pieces included a heavy dose of skinny jeans and leggings with the occasional summer-weight long johns and work shirt worn as a (very short) dress. A flesh-toned silk jumpsuit was one of the biggest hits of the show, as was a navy dress topped with a light blue field coat.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Max Azria

Backstage at the Max Azria show, there was a poster up on the wall which read: "Be Strong. Be Confident." These commandments definitely came to life on the runway, both in the attitude of the models and the amazingness of the clothes. The Max Azria Spring/Summer 2010 collection merged clean sophistication with a rebellious attitude. Dresses crafted from crepe, chiffon, and silk georgette were slashed and deconstructed, as noted in the program, "to reveal the understated beauty of clean lines and sleek sophistication." The pared-down palette got an occasional kick with flashes of delicate beading and metallic cages. While this collection was heavily dress-oriented, there were also some incredible separates thrown into the mix. I especially loved the silk georgette beaded tops. While I loved pretty much every look, the final few really sent my heart aflutter. There was a long white-crepe deep-V dress that was so sexy yet so elegant, a black crepe slash dress that was too hot to resist, and two beaded numbers (one in white, the other in black) that were so stunning, you'll just have to see for yourself in the slideshow!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Mara Hoffman

Mara Hoffman put on an exceptionally colorful show (along with co-presenters and fellow People's Revolution designers Nicholas K and Whitney Port) on day two of the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at New York Fashion Week. Elegantly draped watercolor maxidresses and super short voluminous minis added variety to the bohemian-inspired collection, which also featured masculine elements like boyfriend blazers and tuxedo jackets. Noteworthy looks included a not quite neon yellow ruched mini paired with a floaty printed top, and a beautifully constructed resort style gown paired with tough-chic gladiator heels. Body-conscious skirts, one-shouldered dresses, and tribally influenced patterns don't seem to be going away anytime soon, but when they look this good, why should they?
