Get Sophisticated In Peplum Skirts And Dresses

    image
Anna Yu on Nov 2, 2009 10:23 AM PST
What do Fergie, Lily Allen, and Rihanna all have in common (besides being famously popular singers)? They've been seen wearing peplum dresses and skirts! If you don't know what a peplum is, it's an addition of a short skirt-like panel over the waist on a dress or skirt. Reminiscent of Dior's "New Look" and also of '80s style, peplum dresses and skirts are feminine looks that accentuate hourglass figures. These days, the peplum combines the best of the retro sensibilities of the '40s along with the youthful exuberance of the '80s. Urban Outfitters gives us a taste of the 80s look with their Tribal Print Peplum Skirt made of one of a kind vintage fabrics. For a more classic look, turn to the Alice + Olivia Multi Gather Peplum Dress in a beautiful red satin that will be sure to turn heads at holiday parties. Spaced Out: 10 Finds Inspired By The Moon, Stars, And Beyond

There's water on the moon! Or, well... there's molecular evidence of its presence. Which doesn't sound nearly as exciting as "water on the moon," but still somehow caused me to launch (ha) into a frenzied search for things trendy, wearable, and above all, covered in rockets. And stars. And planets! Interestingly enough, there were plenty of pieces to suit my craving. Tsumori Chisato's bespeckled tights in cream are so whimsical with their teensy rockets and astronauts, I want to gaze at them all night (instead of staring out of my window). Leifsdottir's silk sky print skirt is adorned with planets and a single ruffle, and would be so perfect with tights and a wool jacket. And the 'Stellae' necklace from Anthropologie satisfies my need for both a statement piece and something out of this world. Not so sure about wearing a galactic getup? Swipe some of Too Faced's Galaxy Glam eyeshadow (Super Nova is my favorite) on your eyelids and take your smoky eye routine from smudged to stellar. See more space-inspired picks in my slideshow!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Mara Hoffman

Mara Hoffman put on an exceptionally colorful show (along with co-presenters and fellow People's Revolution designers Nicholas K and Whitney Port) on day two of the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at New York Fashion Week. Elegantly draped watercolor maxidresses and super short voluminous minis added variety to the bohemian-inspired collection, which also featured masculine elements like boyfriend blazers and tuxedo jackets. Noteworthy looks included a not quite neon yellow ruched mini paired with a floaty printed top, and a beautifully constructed resort style gown paired with tough-chic gladiator heels. Body-conscious skirts, one-shouldered dresses, and tribally influenced patterns don't seem to be going away anytime soon, but when they look this good, why should they? New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Michael Angel

Aussie designer Michael Angel kicked off the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a parade of party dresses that provided a feast of color and exotic patterns for its audience. Known for his unique bright prints and innovative cut designs, the designer did not disappoint this season, despite the fact that his signature rainbow leggings were nowhere to be found. Accessorized with flat wrap sandals and bold stone earrings, the models romped the runway in flowing silk wrap dresses and cap-sleeved minis, clearly designed only for those aiming to show off a killer pair of long legs. One particular highlight included a patent leather jacket and silk floral miniskirt combo, reflective of the designer's playful yet feminine take on modern womenswear. Check the slideshow for some highlights straight from the runway!

CollegeCandy Shows How To Jump On The High-Waisted Skirt Trend!

    image
Alex Gambardella on Sep 11, 2009 5:18 AM PDT
Like most of you, I am a [recently graduated but not willing to accept it] college student who would rather dish out money for fashion than food. But sometimes, like in a recession (or when I'm really hungry), that doesn't work out so well. A girl's gotta eat (and look fabulous), right? Which is why I was having some serious issues lately. You see, I am in love with the whole high-waisted skirt look that I see on celebs like Lauren Conrad and Amanda Bynes. It's slimming and cute and I loooove it. But I can't justify spending a good chunk of change on a skirt that will be out of style in 6 months when I have 10 perfectly fine skirts lining my closet. So I decided to figure out a way to turn what I already got into what I want. Turns out, it's not that hard to make your own high-waisted skirt. Even for crafty rejects like myself. Jump over to the CollegeCandy blog for the quick & simple step-by-step!

Video Style Steal: Kristinia Debarge Works It In "Sabotage"

If Kristinia DeBarge looks slightly familiar to you, don't worry, you're not going crazy. I watched American Juniors too -- I'll admit it -- back when they still believed in inflicting Simon Cowell-like cruelty upon children... and Kristinia was quite the contender. She may not have made the winning group of singers (but let's face it -- it was probably for the best), but now she's making it big with single girl anthems like "Goodbye" from her solo album Exposed. In the video for her second single "Sabotage," she dons her darker side in a cropped moto jacket and textured tights, and shows off some sultry dance moves to boot. She may have first arrived on the scene years ago as a cute little crooner, but now she's sexy, single, and stylish... and ready to kick some serious butt. Click "See Video" to watch "Sabotage," then check the slideshow to see how you can cop one of Kristinia's video looks! Photo Credit: MTV.com
