WhatsWear Shows You How To Dress the Part: Sexy Sixties Secretary

    image

Old School is back as we see designers drawing more and more influence from the styles of the yesteryear. Shabby Apple's Manhattan line exudes flirtatious appeal with '60s-esque dresses synonymous with the sexy secretary and demure housewife looks we see on retro shows like Mad Men. The dresses are all about form-fitting bodices paired with fuller skirts, allowing them to be worn around the office and on social occasions. A personal recommendation goes to the Madison Avenue dress, which is made up with a black and white houndstooth material and trench coat detailing. Another particularly notable piece is the Fifth Avenue dress. This piece consists of a pencil skirt dress decorated with a high-waisted giraffe print "skirt" and a pleated neck line. In addition to these impressive looks, the prices reflect a company that desires quality craftsmanship without outstanding costs. The dresses start at $72 and always fall under $100. Times are tough and while saving is important, it does not mean that style has to be sacrificed! Wear these styles to the fullest and pair them with bright red lips and pearls exemplifying the retro look!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Anna Sui

    image

Anna Sui has definitely kept herself busy this season, between her much anticipated Gossip Girl-themed Target collaboration and the stunningly rich circus-themed Spring 2010 collection she debuted just days ago at New York Fashion Week. Preppy separates like cable knit sweaters, pleated skirts, and coordinating jackets were given a playful spin with Peter Pan-collared tops, vividly printed silk shirts, and the most whimsical patchwork jacket imaginable. A steady stream of purple and grey looks gave way to splashes of pink, green, and orange for some eye-brightening variety. Patterns appeared to be haphazardly layered together at first, but with a more careful perusal, the mixing and matching produced an end result that was actually quite seamless- in some cases, it was difficult to see where one piece ended and another began! Purely intriguing, I tell you. My favorite look was the printed shorts and tie-neck blue peeking out from a marching band-inspired vest- and who could forget the sequined mask (worn as a headband- kind of brilliant, right?) on the always adorable Sasha Pivovarova? LA Fashion Week: Nonja McKenzie's Flirty-Femme Spring Collection

Local LA stylist turned designer Nonja McKenzie shined at Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week with her shimmering Spring '09 collection of beaded shifts, satin tops, and silk jumpsuits. Lame and chiffon butterfly-sleeve tops fluttered down the runway, followed by an array of sixties and seventies inspired dresses in soft fabrics and buttery colors. A plethora of flattering wrap dresses with flirtatious ties swinging to and fro brought a certain girlish charm to the collection, while leopard print and silk halter jumpsuits added the necessary sex appeal. Nonja revamped long-sleeved minidresses and body-conscious asymmetrical dresses with ruching down the sides of sleeves and skirts, but her beadwork stole the show with beaded shifts, billowing tops, and my personal favorite--a black and silver beaded eyelash minidress! Check out our favorite looks from Nonja McKenzie's Spring 2009 Collection in the slideshow!

Hive 5: Cool Brooches Make You One Hot Pin-Up Girl!

    image

Let's face it, accessories can make or break an outfit. This past season was all about long necklaces, headbands, belts, and earrings; well, now try working a brooch into your ensemble to add a bit more unexpected visual interest. This classic sort of pin-me-on is all in the spirit of the old ways done in new ways. Vintage inspired, super modern, or surprisingly shiny, brooches are a fun and classy sort of way to add on a little extra something, but the best part is that you can put on as many as you want, move them around, and put them on whatever your heart desires. Click on my SLIDESHOW to see the fabulous brooches and where you can find them all for yourselves.

Vintage Style: Sunshine Finds for Vintage Fashionistas

    image

It's that time of year when the Back to School sales are in full swing. And while I'm won't be stocking up on any yellow No. 2 pencils, I am inspired to sport something in the sunshine shade during the remaining carefree days of summer. Yellow is a surefire attention-getter (which is why there are so many yellow taxicabs on our streets) but that also makes it especially tricky to wear. Try pairing it with neutrals for a chic ensemble or with navy for a nautical look. And if you think you can't wear yellow because it washes you out, don't give up without a fight. With choices that range from banana to canary, you are sure to find a sunshine shade that is just right for you. Still need some inspiration? Then click the SLIDESHOW for a collection of yummy yellow vintage finds.
