Silk Scarves Are Summer's Perfect Accessory!

    image
kate napleton on Jun 22, 2009 10:25 AM PDT
Silk scarves are the perfect accessory. They're a wonderful burst of color, perfect for breaking up a summer outfit. Bad hair day? Tie one around your hair for a chic, bohemian look. One of my favorites for the season is Diane von Furstenberg's Techno Color Bark scarf, so fresh and cute. For a preppier look, there's the AKA New York floral finge scarf from Shopbop. The yellow, black and teal pattern would look just gorgeous with a white tee and jeans for a slightly dressier look for a day on the town. The Echo ethnic garden square silk chiffon scarf is a perfect beach companion. Check out my slideshow for other cute silk scarves for summer!

How To Make A Top From Your Dad's Old Silk Ties

    image
Alex Gambardella on May 7, 2009 2:18 PM PDT
Jennifer Stern is a contributor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to do-it-yourself art and design projects. Below she shares how you can turn Dad's old duds into a flowy new top for yourself!

I have a pile of old ties that my dad cast off to me-- it turned out to be a treasure trove of silk fabric! I decided to embark on a design adventure; I wanted to make something out of them that didn't have the "this was made from men's silk ties" look. I took advantage of the fact that neckties are cut on the bias and used them to make a top with a little flutter. After choosing seven or eight ties from the pile, I took them apart. Then I draped them on my dress form. As I played with them, I ended up using two ties over each shoulder, joining them in the center front and back. This created a graceful V-neck. The ties closest to the shoulders created a fluttery cap sleeve. I joined the front and back with a tie on each side, finishing the armholes at the same time! After I finished draping and sewing, I stood back to evaluate the design-- it looked like a top that was made from ties! The telltale prints and colors combined with the pointed tips at the hem were a dead giveaway. I have to admit, it was pretty interesting with the ready-made "handkerchief" hem, but keeping with my original goal, I chopped off the points at the ends of the ties to straighten out the hem. With the weight of the lined points gone, the result was a graceful draping top...I love it!

New York Fashion Week Runway: Carlos Miele Brings Red Carpet ...

    image

Brazilian designer Carlos Miele delivers once again with stunning looks for ladies who lunch and for anyone who needs a distinctive dress for special occasions. Models walked down the runway while maneuvering around singer-songwriter Max de Castro as he serenaded the audience with a seafoam green guitar. Miele showed some smart origami-like techniques that embellished the necklines and fitted bodices of silk satin cocktail dresses. Some of my favorite looks included dresses that mixed prints and solids. For those chilly nights at all those galas you'll be attending, throw on a bolero which came in furs, knits, and chiffon. Beauty looks included smokey winged-out eye shadow, natural lip color, and pulled back hair. Take a look at the slideshow for more glamorous looks fit for red carpet events.

Look Chic in Menswear for New Year's Eve!

Sick and tired of wearing the same little black dress on New Year's Eve? While it's typically a night for sequins and sparkles, you don't have to go to road most traveled. Set a resolution not to be dressed like everyone else and try something new! By 'new' I mean some sexy menswear that is sure to catch the eye of your special someone when the clock strikes midnight. Start with some black trouser or tuxedo pants, even buy them a size too big to get a cool slouchy look, a la Olsen twin. Top it off with a girly take on a menswear shirt, like this killer steal from J.Crew. Instead of a blazer or tuxedo jacket, try this season's must-have: an oversized vest- my pick is a long white silk one from Josh Goot. To keep the look sexy, sky high heels are a must. Finish the look off with a shiny patent clutch bag and a big bauble ring for some sparkle...it is New Year's Eve after all! Check out the slideshow to get all the pieces for this killer look.
