Shoe of the Week: The Melissa 'Ashanti' Bootie

While the first thought of plastic shoes brings me back to my childhood summers playing in parks while wearing jelly shoes, they're not something I'd typically wear today. However, Brazil-based Melissa Shoes has been on my fashion radar for the last few years and I think I'm ready to take the plunge into plastic shoes again. If you're not familiar with Melissa, you may have heard some of the other world class designers the company has worked with including Vivienne Westwood, Alexandre Herchcovitch, and there's an upcoming collaboration with Jean-Paul Gaultier. Following their motto "Plastic Dreams, Melissa has produced 50 million pairs of shoes over the past 25 years in an eco-friendly way. The Melissa Ashanti bootie has completely charmed me with its fashion-forward silhouette and since they're completely waterproof, I can finally say goodbye to my clunky rain boots.

In fashion, the words comfy and chic are seldom found in the same sentence, much less the same item. So when a comfy Italian shoe comes along, it's only a matter of time before it reaches craze status. We're going to let you in on a little secret: the moccasin is one of those rare items, and it's well on its way to becoming our next footwear favorite. This lovely little Prada moccasin now sits atop the comfy chic food chain. But at $495, it may be too fierce for some wallets, so we've found five more shoes kinda like it. Check the slideshow!

Shoe of the Week: The Giuseppe Zanotti Patent-Trim Spectator ...

While today's pumps are significantly higher and shinier than their classic cap-toed Chanel counterparts, they all maintain the demure, polished quality that draws us to them. Case in point: these patent-trim spectators from Giuseppe Zanotti. I love how he's used non-traditional colors to give them a contemporary edge, but I'm not too crazy about the price! While there are many copycat cap toe pumps out there, only a few can truly be considered worthy substitutes for these Zanotti beauties. See the slideshow of affordable spectator pumps and let us know what you think!

Shoe of the Week: The Low Engineer Boot by Jim Barnier

If you don't know who Jim Barnier is by now, you should at least be familiar with the crackled leather engineer boots he's designed, because they've been ultra-popular in the Hive for about a month now. What's not so popular? Their price. At $428 a pop (well, you get two of them), they're a far, far cry from the bargain boots we love, but we'd insist they're worth every penny... if we had them.

    Sigh.

Luckily there are plenty of styles out there that carry that same casual cool, deliciously distressed leather look that we crave pretty much all year long, at around half the price! Find your favorite similar look for much less in our slideshow of buckled boots!

Hive Tip: Your best bet is going to be the Frye's- their superior craftsmanship and classic design philosophy means they'll outlast the rest, in both style and longevity.

Shoe of the Week: Christian Louboutin's Bling Bling Peep-Toe Pump

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jan 22, 2008 2:46 PM PST
Christian Louboutin makes some of the most magnificent shoes we've ever seen, and are likely to ever see, and their price tags ensure that only a small number of us will ever experience that magnificence first-hand. (Or first-foot?) Case in point: these $1,245 'bling bling' peep-toe pumps. Extravagant doesn't even begin to describe them, with the seductiveness of the signature red sole ever so slightly toned down by the playful geometric baubles gracing the toe. They speak for themselves, but since this picture is worth more than a thousand dollars, we've searched high and low for similar looks for much less.
