LA Fashion Week: Nonja McKenzie's Flirty-Femme Spring Collection

Local LA stylist turned designer Nonja McKenzie shined at Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week with her shimmering Spring '09 collection of beaded shifts, satin tops, and silk jumpsuits. Lame and chiffon butterfly-sleeve tops fluttered down the runway, followed by an array of sixties and seventies inspired dresses in soft fabrics and buttery colors. A plethora of flattering wrap dresses with flirtatious ties swinging to and fro brought a certain girlish charm to the collection, while leopard print and silk halter jumpsuits added the necessary sex appeal. Nonja revamped long-sleeved minidresses and body-conscious asymmetrical dresses with ruching down the sides of sleeves and skirts, but her beadwork stole the show with beaded shifts, billowing tops, and my personal favorite--a black and silver beaded eyelash minidress! Check out our favorite looks from Nonja McKenzie's Spring 2009 Collection in the slideshow!

Consider for a moment that, according to the EPA, four million tons of textiles are sent to landfills each year. Four million tons! Now we vintage fashionistas are already doing our part to alleviate this particular problem, but there's always something more we can do, right? Maybe it's time to check out that consignment shop on your way home. Or to make sure you keep some paper shopping bags in your car for your next department store visit. Or to find a tailor and re-fashion a dress you were going to trash. Being green and being chic are not mutually exclusive. And vintage fashions will always carry a lower carbon footprint than any of the new eco-fashion labels. Just click the SLIDESHOW to be inspired with ten fabulous finds under $100.

Hive 5: We Rounded Up Your Grooviest Flower Child Finds!

Now, I'm a child of the 80s, but looking at pictures of my mom when she was my age with her long, super-straight hair and billowy shirts almost immediately sent me on a seventies-inspired shopping frenzy....almost. Fringe still makes me cringe a bit, but Gucci's 'devendra' boots might just change my mind with their luxe gold hardware and perfectly shaped toe. But for a much less expensive foray into decades past, feel free to sneak into your parents' closet when they're not home, and see what you find... and then later, use the loot to extract any, uh, noteworthy stories about past lives. Click on my slideshow to see five fashion-forward flower child styles!
