Line To Watch: Finsk By Julia Lundsten

    image
Pauline Montupet on Sep 9, 2009 10:19 AM PDT
When Manolo Blahnik uses words like "exquisite, "divine," and "perfect" to describe your shoe designs, you know you're on the up and up (and not just in terms of heel height). That's exactly where designer Julia Lundsten is going with her line Finsk. Launched in 2004, her collection of crazy designs and quirky, sculptural heels has her dubbed as the Eames of footwear. While attending London's Royal College of Art she won the prestigious Manolo Blahnik Award 2 years in a row. Her inspiration from architecture and furniture is visible in the details of her shoes. Her love of furniture design extends to her way of thinking too -- considering the heel and the sole as the chair's legs and the upper as the seat, her shoes always seem to cradle the foot perfectly. With an unconventional style, the pumps, ankle booties, and boots all feature heels hand-carved from sustainable hard woods from Brazil. If that doesn't get you walking tall, I don't know what will! Check out the slideshow to see some of her signature styles.

Treat Your Feet! 15 Fancy Flip-Flops Under $15

Flip-flops, thongs, rubber slippers ... whatever you call them, you can't deny that they're awesome. I'm usually a dresses and heels type of girl. No sneakers for me! But I can't always run around town and complete errands in a timely and comfortable manner if I'm teetering around in heels. I love flip-flops. They're comfortable and you can barely tell you have anything on your feet! I've even gone hiking in flip-flops and felt as at ease as if I had a pair of Nike sneakers on! Another great thing? They're so cheap, with retailers like Old Navy and Wal-Mart offering multiple pairs in every color imaginable for less than it would cost to hop the subway. I personally own quite a few pairs of these rubber slippers in a multitude of colors and I love matching them to a casual jeans and a t-shirt type outfits I usually wear for a relaxed weekend. However, as great and easy as these simple pieces of footwear are, I still run into a dilemma. Sure, flip-flops are comfortable and totally appropriate for just hanging out with family and friends, but what if you have something to go to that requires actual footwear? Most of the time, my feet are too sore from the night before to imagine stuffing them into another pair of stilettos, but I can't roll into a nice luncheon with a pretty sundress and some ratty flip-flops! Luckily, it's summer and designers are offering a great selection of fancy flip-flops featuring jewels, metallics, leather, and other fun and pretty details at more-than-affordable prices. Check out the slideshow for flip-flops that will enhance the outfit without hurting the feet!

Hot In The Hive: Isla Fisher's Embellished Sandals For Less!

When your husband has an alter ego as uber-fabulous as Bruno, you better be spotted wearing only fashion design's elite from your head to your feet! As a result, Isla Fisher is rarely caught looking less than cute, even when she's keeping it super-casual on an outing with daughter Olive. While I'm sure Isla's version of "bumming it" on a sunny afternoon stroll is hardly bargain-friendly, you can snag her summery embellished sandals without having to sell off any of your appendages. MySpringShoes.com sells an indistinguishable strappy pair for just $39.99, which is more than affordable considering their versatility! They're both casual and comfy yet still dressy enough to wear out with their beaded and bejeweled straps and metallic detailing. If only I had known about this steal before I splurged on the style's more costly twins by Steve Madden!

    Price: $39.99
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add Spring's Penticoff Sandals to the Hive.

Blast From The Past: Jellies Make A Comeback!

    image
Adriana Nova on May 14, 2009 4:17 PM PDT
Jellies are as endemic to summer as ice cream truck jingles, kickball, and sparklers at twilight. For so many of us, the bright colors and strappy designs of this childhood staple were an early way to make a fashion statement, as well as a reason to beg to be allowed to wear nail polish (or sneak it when your parents weren't looking). We left them somewhere between 5th and 6th grade, when Keds or more grown-up leather sandals took over and jellies were relegated to either younger siblings or the "outgrown" bin. And, like going from lowly camper to bonafide junior counselor, you never really looked back. At least, that is, until recent years when a passion for all things retro and simple has come surging back and your favorite rubber footies have been reinterpreted by fashion favorites from on-high (Givenchy, Jimmy Choo) to the more affordable (Asos). Check out the slideshow to see if they can entice you once again!

Make A Statement With Architectural Heels

    image

Move over, "it" bag. For the past couple of seasons, it's been about the "it" shoes-- who could forget the crazy caged booties at YSL, or the futuristic lucite heels at Gianfranco Ferre? All over the Spring/Summer '09 runways it was the outrageous heels that stole the show. Shoes with unique and artistic shaped heels are a great way to try out a more fashion-forward look. While you may not be ready to rock the futuristic, exaggerated shoulders of the Balenciaga and Balmain collections, you can absolutely try an out there shoe. Look for platforms, block heels, cone heels, and beyond- there was no stopping the designers' creativity this season! Update your wedge look with a cut-out like the "Ashley" wedge from Kors by Michael Kors. For a platform look, try a circular heel instead of a traditional stacked heel, like Pour La Victoire's "Felicia" sandal. And don't think this look only works with large clunky shoes. Ladylike shoes get the "look at me" treatment too! Metallic heels are perfect for evening, like Oscar de la Renta's cut away cone heels and Proenza Schouler's silver cut-out heel sandals. Next time you're putting together an outfit, start with a statement shoe and build from there. Check out the slideshow for some shoe inspiration.
