Tis the season to get your layer on. Winter is now giving way to spring which usually leads to erratic weather where one minute a tank top and shorts seems appropriate and the next you’re reaching for a big chunky sweater. The layered look has been popular for quite some time thanks to stars like Mary-Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie who seems to combat the ‘closet full of clothes and too much to wear’ issue by wearing everything they’ve got! Most of the time these ladies manage to make the whole just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-threw-a-bunch-of-stuff-on look work, but sometimes, they look like they’re drowning in a big sea of fabric. Both ladies are petite and as a result, need to exercise caution when piling on the layers.

I know exactly where Eric Damon, the genius behind all the incredible styles we lust over each week on the hit show Gossip Girl, is going to find looks for upcoming episodes: the Nanette Lepore showroom! How do I know this? Because each look that sauntered down the runway during the fall/winter ’08 show simply screamed ‘Serena van der Woodsen’- not surprising since the collection was inspired by the high-society party girl. The looks summoned the jet-setting fashionista who always has a fabulous party to go to. We saw beautiful ladylike-suits spiced up with sparkly tiaras and sexy feminine touches like sheer lace, sleek high-waisted skirts with gorgeously structured pleats in the back, cropped jackets reminiscent of Jackie O infused with a playful modern twist; taffeta tops with exaggerated bows, floaty chiffon blouses, sequined cami’s paired with either wide or slim-leg pants, and daringly curve-hugging ensembles for the diva who likes to flaunt what she’s got.

Dressing to flatter a big bust is not a problem I have ever had to deal with. The same can’t be said of celebs like Jessica Simpson, whose father once famously nauseated us all by claiming: “she’s got double D’s, you can’t cover those suckers up!” Fortunately, Papa Joe was wrong, and there ARE ways to minimize and flatter big busts. 1. “For big chests, look for tops with shape. I have to wear things that go in at the waist or I can look pregnant.” - Jessica Simpson Style Tip: Look for tops that are tight at the waist and loose around the chest area- this style is a great way to minimize the waist and create the illusion of a smaller bust. The wrap-top is another great option - it minimizes the bust region, plus, you can adjust the tie to cinch the waist comfortably and avoid looking like you have a bun in the oven.

Celebrities are very lucky creatures. Why? They get showered with designer duds FOR FREE. However, this doesn’t mean that they’ve lost all appreciation for a good bargain and don’t love wallet-friendly items as much as the rest of us. Fortunately, going low-end is all the rage right now, and we’ve all be cautioned that nothing screams ‘Fashion Victim’ louder than going head-to-toe in high-end items. Here’s where three fashion fatales look good for less!

Ever since Gossip Girl Serena van der Woodsen sexily draped herself over a pool table in a black studded Catherine Malandrino shift dress while on her first date with the loveable Dan Humphrey, I had to stop and reassess my opinion of the mini dress as date wear. Off to Bloomingdales I went where I purchased my first ever mini dress, which had me asking: ‘where have you been all my life’ the second I slipped it on. The magic of a mini dress, like the one worn by Serena, is that it strikes the perfect balance between revealing and reserved. The daring length is countered by the absence of cleavage and an ultra formfitting silhouette for a look that still leaves much to be desired. Since these dresses tend to be a bit forgiving, it can be difficult to discern how they’re supposed to fit. You’re best bet is to make sure the dress gently grazes the body and isn’t too clingy or billowy.

Ashlee Simpson has had her share of hits and misses in the style department, from her days as a wild punk rocker (miss) to her transition to a buxom blonde (hit), and hundreds of other looks, hairdo’s, styles, and so on in between. However, ever since she hooked up with Fall out Boy lead singer Pete Wentz, Ashlee seems to have come into her own and developed a unique signature style that is a part punk, part sexy vixen, part avant-garde trendsetter, that suits her to perfection (come on, you know you kind of hate yourself for it, but you have to admit you’re kind of starting to envy her style!). In pictures of the two, Ashlee looks absolutely radiant- serving as further evidence to the universal truth that feeling good is the most essential ingredient to looking good. For my next ‘date night’ edition, I looked to Ashlee for inspiration. She always looks confident, happy, sleek, and never overdone.

“First date” - two simple words that can send shivers up anyone’s spine, much like the words “job interview.” When you think about it, there isn’t much of a difference between the two, except one involves cocktails and palpable sexual tension. I have no idea where that old adage “You are what you eat” came from, because the truth is, “You are what you wear.” Clothes speak volumes and no matter what, they will always prompt judgments from others. Chances are, the person you’re into isn’t going to notice how perfectly your bangles play into the boho-chic vibe you were going for, or how you expertly coordinated your makeup shades to play up the metallic sheen outlining your top. Guys don’t notice the details, but they do see the overall big picture. Here are some general tips to follow before any date, after the jump…

Oh the joys of getting dressed before a date—the plotting, the scrutinizing, the constant need for re-assurance from your friends that you look hot and not in any way slutty, the hours in front of a mirror, the Polaroid pics (how can anyone forget Cher’s over-the-top first-date precautions in Clueless?)… Maybe you don’t go quite as far as these extremes—or maybe you go embarrassingly beyond—the point is, any girl would be lying if she didn’t admit to at least a slight amount of neurosis regarding this process. But lighten up, ladies, because as I recently discovered, sometimes the perfect date-night outfit can emerge accidentally on its own.

Last time we set the boundaries for what a first date outfit should entail. Remember, the look should reflect who you are, shouldn’t give it all away (too tight, low cut, and too short are NO-NO’S), shouldn’t appear as though you tried too hard, and conversely, like you didn’t put any effort into your look at all. The outfit I devised to meet all these guidelines included jeans, a flirty top, a blazer, and boots. However, this might not work for everyone—say, women who LIVE in dresses (as many of my friends do). A dress does not always have to indicate high-maintenance, and finding a dress you love and building upon it with fabulous accessories may result in that ever-so-elusive understated sexy, laid back, fun to hang with-vibe that is guaranteed to keep him transfixed by you.

So, it’s Friday night and the cute guy you met at a party last weekend asked you out on a date—you really like him and really want to overcome all the first date barriers to score an ever so elusive second date. Well there are lots of precautions to take to get there, but I will help you out with the first, which is perhaps the most important. You guessed it: Wardrobe Choice! Since this is a first date, let’s consider a standard scenario: dinner at a restaurant whose ambiance falls somewhere in between local bar and 5-star hot spot, followed by a movie. The combo-date will give us a lot of leeway to examine several possibilities. Let’s look to Cameron Diaz for inspiration. You could wear that killer dress that never fails to get heads turning. In this situation, however, a dress can potentially make you seem high-maintenance; while some guys do find high-maintenance gals appealing, it’s a slippery slope, and a risk simply not worth taking on a first date

To dress to impress on a date, one must first possess a firm understanding of what guys find sexiest on their ladies. And there is no better way to acquire such knowledge than to hear it straight from the fellas themselves. So far, you’ve seen my take, opinions from ‘regular guys,’ and tips I acquired on the matter from Tyson Beckford and some of his underlings on the Bravo series Make Me A Supermodel. For this week’s post, I’ve decided to take it up a notch and went through all of my celebrity interviews to see if there was anything I could work with. Oddly, the three guys who I solicited opinions from were all embroiled in a bit of sexual-orientation controversy recently. Yup, I’m talking about dynamic trio Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, and JC Chasez.

Thanks to a man named Max Azria, the signature Hervé Léger bandage-dress, which took a major hit when silhouettes began to expand, ultimately resulting in the fashion house’s demise, is back with a vengeance! The look isn’t just a celebrity must-have, it’s THE celebrity must have. It’s so hot that after months of seclusion, a rehabbed Lindsay Lohan opted for one of the classic Herve styles for her re-emergence onto the scene, so hot that uber fashionista Victoria Beckham committed the ultimate fashion show faux-pas by wearing a Leger dress to a Marc Jacobs fashion show, so hot that once that dress became available at Intermix online, it caused the server to crash, so hot that it’s almost impossible to find a red carpet event devoid of at least one celebrity swaddled within the confines of this unmistakable look.

Who hasn’t grappled with those ‘blah’ days when nothing seems to fit right or look good? Believe it or not, wearing something that will get you noticed is a great way to conceal those problem areas that you don’t want anyone to notice, who knew?! Graphic patterns are super hot this season- from florals, to graphic black and white patterns, to art-deco inspired, to every other type of pattern you could possibly imagine- so tracking down a ‘get noticed to not get noticed’ item couldn’t easier. Busy patterns forcing the eye to rove instead of honing in on one spot, hence camouflaging problem areas. A little tip to help you get it right is to remember that the taller you are the bigger prints you can wear.

Just like ruffles, the mini dress is a style I arbitrarily rejected until I took the plunge, tried one on, and fell in love. I’m not really sure why it took me so long to give the mini a test run- maybe it was the result of relying on jeans and cute tops as go-to choices for so many years. However that ship has sailed and the minidress, in all its just-slip-it-on-and-you’re done glory is now officially my fool-proof choice. Wear your mini with sandals during the day, with killer pumps for a night out, with bare legs when the heat strikes, with leggings while the cold lingers, with loaded on accessories for a boho-inspired look, with minimal accessories for an effortlessly polished look, and so on.

I, like most women, suffer from an inexplicable obsession with shoes whereby the sight of a gorgeously structured inordinately priced pair of pumps can abolish all rhyme or reason and evoke intense pangs of longing and serious consideration as to how many meals I’d have to skip to be able to afford such a treasure. This affliction gained national recognition on account of a little show called Sex and the City, but unlike Carrie Bradshaw, who complained constantly about money woes yet always seemed to find a spare $500 for a pair of Manolos, most of us can’t send caution to the wind in the face of gorgeous foot-candy and need to seriously consider the value of such an investment.

We all know that black is a super-trend that belongs in the trend hall of fame, and that white is well on its way to claiming a spot as well, so what happens when you blend these two power forces together? You get one SUPER trend! Pairing black and white is not a revolutionary idea; however, this old-school idea has been given a new school twist this season resulting in styles that are funky, edgy, fun, and anything but safe and boring. The best part about this style? The dress does all the work for you. Accessories can be kept to a minimum; just zip it up, slip into your favorite pumps (any color goes), grab a clutch (again, any color goes), and you’re done! Wow, that was easy! Check out my SLIDESHOW for some awesome new-wave black and white styles.

Taking care of your skin is good thing. Taking care of the environment is a super good thing. So it’s safe to say taking care of your skin with products that are environmentally-conscious is a really, REALLY good thing! For an eco-friendly and efficient beauty regimen look no further than LaLicious Sugar Souffle Scrub, $22 and Body Oil, $11. The sugar soufflé exfoliates, conditions and moisturizes while the body oil penetrates the skin, locking in moisture without that greasy feeling smoothing the skin to perfection (I kid you not- I am fighting off the urge to pet my incredibly smooth skin as I write this!).

Bows are another one of those quirky trends that are steadily making their way onto the racks for spring and summer and will dominate them come fall. Bows abounded on the fall/winter ’08 runway shows: We saw flirty bows to compliment party-girl styles at Nanette Lepore, Park Avenue princess bows at Lela Rose, old-fashioned Russian-inspired bows at Verrier, Parisian bows at Milly, and that’s just skimming the surface of a very deep pool of bows! Celebs are always the leaders of the trend pack, so it’s no surprise that most have them have already hopped on-board the bow express. Check out my SLIDESHOW for some truly bow-rific looks and tell us what you think about the trend in comments.

Kermit the Frog once sang it ain’t easy being Green. While this may have been true in the 70s, these days, going green has become incredibly glamorous! Case in point: Cheeky Monkey Jewelry, a line created from 100% reclaimed gold, silver and fair-trade gems (translation: they’re pre-screened to ensure that they uphold fair trade standards and offer equitable return to the communities that mine them). The collections will keep you looking chic with a dose of environmental consciousness. The Endangered Collection includes 12 fabulously jewel-encrusted critters, all of which top endangered species lists, with each featuring a message relating to a particular plight, like the Polar Bear pendant which warns: On thin ice! and the Mushroom pendant which reads: Keep The Fungus among us! and the Seashell which laments What a calamity!’.

You may not always agree with what they say, do, or anything about them, but there’s no denying that when it comes to being the center of attention and being the ones to watch (and watch out for) at a party, Paris Hilton and Kimberly Stewart are in a class of their own! Aside from being famous for being famous, these girls are known first and foremost as hardcore partiers. There are a few requirements to make it as a true party girl: having no shame, the intense desire to get attention at any cost, a limitless supply of energy directed at nothing else but partying and dancing on tables, and most importantly, a killer wardrobe.

Whip out the tide sticks, seltzer and salt, or whatever else you use to get stains out, because white is giving its counterpart, black, a run for its money and quickly becoming the shade to crave. Although white was once classified as a spring/summer-time only thing while its counterpart, black, took center-stage as every woman’s proverbial go-to shade, ever since the ‘No white after labor day’ law was sent into retirement, white has taken over with all things white - from white shoes, to white bags, to white jeans, and so on - are officially in the year-round staple category. And believe it or not, this shade can be just as versatile and- gasp- figure-flattering as black. White is the perfect backdrop to build upon to create the unique look of your choice. Pair it with pastels for a spring-friendly look, with chunky bangles and wooden heels for a more earthy vibe, or play with the unexpected by teaming an innocent white frock with urban accessories for an edgier vibe.

On the show Make Me A Supermodel, host Niki Taylor always seems so soft spoken and sweet. And this isn’t just an act for the cameras- I’ve interviewed her several times and she’s almost unfathomably nice! To celebrate the final episode, which airs tonight, we had all you hivers call the shots and come up with questions to ask Niki and Tyson. So far we’ve heard what they had to say about the modeling industry, what it takes to make it, the contestants, and so forth, but you all wanted to delve a little deeper, and wanted to know what Niki is REALLY like. And seriously, who better to ask than her tells-it-like-it-is co-host Tyson Beckford.

    Rock and roll and celebrities go together like- well, like rock and roll and celebrities! Celebs just love showing off their wild sides- either by dating a head-to-toe covered in tattoos rocker, or by simply emulating the iconic (?) styles of such trendsetters (??) as Slash from Guns n’ Roses. This trend is universal and inspires designers from every end of the designing food chain, from ultra sophisticated high-end labels like Chanel to grungy, edgy designers like Alexander Wang. Who cares if you’ve never touched an electric guitar and you’d rather rock out to a catchy pop tune over a head banging metal jam- you can still rock the ultra sexy rock ‘n’ roll look and infuse a bit of your own personality into the style- like Nicky Hilton who balances edginess with sophistication, Ashley Olsen, who rocks out while staying true to her boho-chic put together/undone signature style;

If you’re anything like me, you are eagerly waiting for the weather to make up it’s mind- I mean come one Mother Nature, either make it warm or cold, stop driving us all crazy by constantly fluctuating between the two! There are many reasons for my impatience- not knowing how to dress appropriately, starting to feel sick of my winter wardrobe and eagerly anticipating the debut of my spring wardrobe, but mainly, this weather craziness is taking a serious hit on my skin. One minute it’s dry and itchy, the next it’s oily, one day it’s clear and fresh as can be, the next it’s dull and lifeless- I mean give a girl a break!

It’s a situation just about every girl is all too familiar with. You come home after a long day at work, class, a tireless day of shopping, etc. and can’t help but gasp in horror when you check the clock and realize you only have a half hour to prep for a big date, a night out with the girls, a friend’s birthday bash, YOUR birthday bash! It’s okay, you tell yourself, that leaves plenty of time to hop in the shower, put together a doable ensemble and smear some makeup on. You start to relax until you catch a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror and realize your hair is in a state of disaster- how did it get so flat/frizzy/oily/disgustingly drab?!

While it’s true that us gals love our locks, it’s also true that we don’t always treat our hair as nicely as we should. Whether it’s constant color changes, being slaves to the straightening iron (guilty as charged), too many perms, weaves, extensions and so on, our hair has a lot of put up with and can’t withstand it all. So what can we do to get out locks to forgive us for such abuse? Well when America’s Next Top Model winner CariDee English needed a quick hair fix before a magazine photo-shoot, she opted for Redken’s luxurious, salon-only Chemistry System Hair Recovery Treatment service. David Stanko, Haircolor Consultant for Redken, explained, “The Chemistry System is one of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve experienced in my career. I use the Chemistry System to prepare hair for color services and repair hair from mechanical abuse – and get amazing results every time!”

Celeb Style: Lightweight Scarves for Spring Transitions From coast to coast, lightweight scarves are without a doubt becoming the IT accessory of the season. Wait, Scarves for spring? Yes! A lightweight scarf is not just a transitional item; it’s also the destination point. A scarf, wrap, or shawl is a great alternative to a cardigan. It’s portable, and there’s just so much you can do with it: drape it over a thin shirt when the weather is in that in between phase between not quite cold and not quite warm, loop it through your handbag for some added drama, tie it around your head for a funkier look, and so on. The must-have brand propelling this must-have trend is Leigh & Luca, whose collection of oversized luxury scarves have been snatched up celebrities such as Madonna, Posh and David Beckham, Mischa Barton, the Olsens, Jessica Alba, Kisten Dunst, Sienna Miller, Fergie and more.

Editor's Pick: Statement Pieces From Nashelle Jewelry

by Sabrina Newman
Mar 26, 2008 12:16 PM PDT

There are two things you€™re never fully dressed without: a smile, and accessories! I am always amazed by the power of accessories and how they can so radically transform a look. Adding accessories can take your look from day to night, make a boring look a bold one, turn a safe look into a statement-making one, and so on. Last season€™s soft, subdued accessories made of thin strands and clear jewels have given way to bolder, statement-making ones made of heavier materials like metal and stone for chunky, eye-catching, artful pieces. Accessorizing differentiates your style from the masses, so the items you choose should have a unique quality, which is why I€™m loving pretty much everything from the Nashelle Jewelry line. NYFW Fun: Getting Dressed Right For the First Day of Fashion Week

by Sabrina Newman
Feb 1, 2008 11:16 AM PST

After last season€™s fashion week (my first EVER), I was racked with regret and humiliation over some of my ensemble choices that simple screamed AMATEUR. For the second time around, I vowed to get it RIGHT. The first show I€™d be covering was the Heart Truth€™s Red Dress Collection. I was super excited (it was a celeb magnet - will post on that later) but this posed quite the dilemma. The invite said everyone should wear red, but do people really follow that? Talk about double edged sword! If I wear red, I might look like a clueless amateur- so NOT how I wanted to start things off this time around. But if I don€™t wear red, I might look like a diva who thinks she€™s too cool.
