New York Fashion Week Runway: Rubin Singer's Spring 2009 ...

Stripes, polka dots, and prints. Navy, white and ecru. Asymmetry, panels and piping. Rubin Singer's Spring 2009 Collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was a celebration of contrasts. And if you didn't get it by seeing the collection, Singer drove it home by backing his show with the thumping dance hit "Hip Hip Tension." In a lesser designer's hands fusing disparate elements like this would have spelled disaster. Singer carries it off, especially in his cocktail dresses. Take a look at the slideshow from the runway.

New York Fashion Week Style Steal: Edgy Is Easy for Jonathan ...

Standing on the steps of Bryant Park and watching passerby is often a fashion show in its own right - check out Jonathan and Allie, who I met as they were leaving the Rubin Singer show. I was immediately enamored with Jonathan's 3.1 Phillip Lim shirt- casual cool at its finest, with stripes! Vintage wooden Ray-Bans and tan leather shoes were classic but edgy finishing touches. Allie's brushstroke-print Julie Brown dress made a vibrant statement amidst a sea of black-clad fashion week attendees, and the belt added shape to the otherwise roomy frock. Click on the slideshow to get their look, and check back every day for more style on the streets from New York Fashion Week!

NYFW Round-Up: Fashion Is All in the Details

    image

After seeing scores of fashion shows over seven days, I'll be honest, all of the clothes start looking the same. Betsey Johnson and Philip Lim looking the same? What am I smoking, right? Unfortunately, nothing. So sometimes its good to take a step back, and then take two steps forward, to see the intricacies that drew you to the designs in the first place. Sometimes its the place where two divergent patterns meet. Sometimes its the intricate interplay of 4-5 separates. Sometimes its a simple shape used in a new way. Sometimes its just indefinably cool. Here then are some of my favorite details from the New York Fashion Week runways.

NYFW Runway Report: Rubin Singer's "Tough Chick" Collection

    image

The Rubin Singer Fall/Winter €™08 collection was inspired by Fritz Lang€™s 1927 silent film Metropolis, which follows a maiden who is captured and turned into a robot, effectively captured by the models all sporting the same jet black futuristic wigs. The collection clearly reflected a darker, grittier time: dark colors pervaded this runway and the intense precision of the cuts and silhouettes gave the collection a very serious vibe. Each look was paired with patent stilettos, exuding that "I€™m a tough chick so don€™t mess with me vibe,€ but in an incredibly sexy, provocative way. Towards the end, however, the mood softened and we saw come color creep in, as well as looser, less binding silhouettes.

    Stylehive Scorecard
    Key Colors: Black, Gray, Charcoal.
    Key Fabrics: Wool, Chiffon, Satin.
Look: You talking to me? You talking to me?
Celeb Sightings: Tyson Beckford (who was boisterously cheering on several models, causing them to break their stone faced glares with reluctant smiles).
