Style Flashback: Clarissa From 'Clarissa Explains It All'

"Clarissa Explains It All" had us hooked on SNICK (that's Saturday Night Nickelodeon for those of you who don't remember) from the moment it debuted. We loved how Clarissa broke the fourth wall to let us into her world and we can still sing along with the show's theme song ("naaah nah nah na-na...way cool"), but it was her eclectic teenybopper style that had us always coming back for more. To help us recreate Clarissa's look for today we checked in with our fashion expert Brian, who had some great tips.

Brian says: Clarissa's style might be a little too retro (and not in a good way) for today, but you can still capture the essence of her look without getting sideways glances on the street. Swap her button-front shirt with a fun peasant blouse and substitute a pair of girly ballet flats for her boring black shoes.

Vintage Fashionistas Savor Gray This Season!

    image

When searching for vintage clothing online, it's important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you're looking for something gray, because well, there's gray (the American spelling) and then there's grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines. If you do, you'll be rewarded with a smorgasbord of vintage treats in this classic, conservative neutral. Try substituting darker charcoal shades of gray for black. Or choose pale shades of gray to take the place of white. Morning, noon or night, for dresses, coats or evening gowns, gray is a fabulous wardrobe choice for a vintage fashionista. Hot In The Hive: DEFY Bags

    image

So everywhere you go these days, people are making an effort to "go green", from light bulbs to cars to clothing. Anything that helps out Mother Earth, I'm for it! That's why when I spotted these DEFY Bags, I had to check them out. Not only are their bags unique and completely cool, but they also make a statement -- political, social commentary, or just random observations of art and culture in an eye-catching and slightly retro design. And it's not just the way the bags look that make DEFY Bags so hot, it's the fact that they also have a 'go green' attitude. These messenger bags are perfect to carry around pretty much anything you'll need throughout the day and each one is truly individual because artists hand create the picture on the front from old billboard signs. Don't see a picture that expresses the true you? You can design your own flap! Another cool thing to check for after you find the bag that shows your personality the most? Look inside and see just what kind of message the original billboard was selling! Edgy, personal and made of recycled goods, DEFY Bags are worth more than a second glance!

    Price: Small: $115.00 - Medium: $120.00 - Large: $125.00

Vintage Fashionistas Cheer For Pink And Orange!

    image

You don't need to be a genius to determine that I am not a big fan of pink, based on a quick peek into my closet. Or orange, for that matter. So it's hard for me to explain why I squeal with delight when I see these two colors together. I guess sometimes what seems like two fashion wrongs can actually make a big fashion right! And lots of folks agree. Like Jonathan Adler, for instance, who believes there's no better way to banish the blues than with this bright color combination. Or Alexander Girard and so many other designers in the 1960s who married these two tangy shades in home decor and advertising as well as in fashion. Today's slideshow features some outstanding vintage examples of this zesty color pairing, which is like putting on an instant good mood (or enjoying a nice big scoop of rainbow sherbet). Who can possibly stay dreary while wearing something this bright and cheery? Click the slideshow to get inspired!

Hot In The Hive: Revo Heritage Table Radio

Sure, retro "gadgets" may look cool in a stylishly old-fashioned sort of way, but when it comes to actually using them, our geeky reliance on modern-day tech has us too cyber-spoiled and impatient to put any effort in something that can't keep up with our 3G speediness. The solution? A techie piece of equipment that just looks vintage, but packs all the convenient specs and capabilities of the most recent releases in the gadget world. The Revo Heritage Table Radio has the 60s-style walnut veneer surface, but boasts some seriously modern features in that retro-looking package: an iPod dock, WiFi for all your favorite internet stations, wireless streaming from your laptop, a remote control for maximum laziness, and even an alarm clock in case you doze off while listening to your tunes. It's the perfect device for the music lover who may have an old soul... but secretly can't live without a healthy dose of modern tech!

    Price: 229,95 GBP

Get Sophisticated In Peplum Skirts And Dresses

    image

What do Fergie, Lily Allen, and Rihanna all have in common (besides being famously popular singers)? They've been seen wearing peplum dresses and skirts! If you don't know what a peplum is, it's an addition of a short skirt-like panel over the waist on a dress or skirt. Reminiscent of Dior's "New Look" and also of '80s style, peplum dresses and skirts are feminine looks that accentuate hourglass figures. These days, the peplum combines the best of the retro sensibilities of the '40s along with the youthful exuberance of the '80s. Urban Outfitters gives us a taste of the 80s look with their Tribal Print Peplum Skirt made of one of a kind vintage fabrics. For a more classic look, turn to the Alice + Olivia Multi Gather Peplum Dress in a beautiful red satin that will be sure to turn heads at holiday parties. Take a peek at my slideshow for more peplum skirts and dresses!
