Vintage Fashionistas Get Patriotic in Red, White and Blue

    image

July 4th isn't just another day off work or an excuse to take an extra-long weekend trip. It's a day to remember and commemorate the men who drafted the Declaration of Independence, the document that provides us all with the freedoms we enjoy today. And since this is a time when the United States is still engaged in battle, you may find yourself even more tempted to wear red, white and blue to show your patriotism. But I'll caution you that this look can be a bit tricky to pull off without feeling like a walking American flag. So remember that it's equally patriotic to wear red, white, or blue to that picnic or parade or fireworks celebration, or to drop just a hint of this somewhat expected color combo in your accessory choices. Vintage Fashionistas Go Boho!

    image
Mary Kincaid on Jun 26, 2009 8:21 AM PDT
First there was Boho, then Nouveau Boho, then Boho Chic, and now it's Foho. Or maybe that was Boho, then Boho Chic, and then Nouveau Boho...whatever. Add in French Bobo and a recent reference I saw to Woe-ho and it's enough to make a girl's head spin. But any way you look at it, and whatever you want to call it, women seem to love this easy-breezy style of seventies silhouettes, billowy blouses, crochet trim, soft worn-in denim and traditional embroideries. While Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and the Olsen twins might have started the craze, and others may tell you it's on the outs, I still know plenty of gals who aren't willing to give up these comfy clothes just yet. This is one style where authentic vintage clothing is way cooler than new. So just click the slideshow and go boho!

Summer Florals For Your Inner Retro Girlie-Girl

    image

Summer weekends were made for swingy floral frocks like this one from Unique Vintage - brightly hued, unapologetically feminine, and sweet (like you!). The vintage styling begs for feminine accessories that are ladylike, but not too retro (lacks imagination) which is why this geometric bamboo bag couldn't be more perfect. With anything pink - ditto red, green, or royal purple - never ever be tempted to wear shoes that match...it looks beyond cheesy. Instead, go for nude tones both with your bag & shoes (these are by Easy Spirit) - which have the added benefit of making your legs look that much longer. To complete the picture, add some delicate amethyst and gold earrings and coordinating rose-tinted Miu Miu sunglasses. Check out FashionTribes for more!

Solange Brings Retro Sound And Fashion-Forward Style In ...

    image

Solange Knowles is making a name for herself in the music world, finding her own niche and style. Back in the Destiny's Child days when big sis Beyonce, was busy becoming a household name, Solange was also trying her hand at music. She made a few cameos in videos, but she really just came across as a mini-Beyonce. Her style was a junior and less sassy version of her older, more famous, counterpart. Whoever marketed her music saw the success of Destiny's Child and the hip-pop/ R&B sound and tried to emulate that in Solange's image. Solange was able to gain a little recognition, but was still mostly recognized as "Beyonce's sister." After laying low in music for a few years and only modeling for the occasional Dereon ad (an urban streetwear company headed by Beyonce and their mother, Tina Knowles), Solange has returned with her catchy, retro-soul album named Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. The songs have an old school feel with trippy beats and a tint of funk and blues. The music is tight, the lyrics are sincere and the beats get you moving. Her style, however, is the biggest and most pleasant surprise. From bright colors, extreme details, fashion-forward silhouettes and risk-taking ensembles, Solange shows that she has grown into her own woman and is setting the standards for her own sound and style. Check out the colorful, fun and fabulous looks of rompers and dresses in Solange's video for "Sandcastle Disco" and then check out the slideshow to see how you can adopt her look into your own everyday wardrobe!

Vintage Fashionistas Keep It Together With Separates

    image

According to my completely unscientific poll, most fashionistas break out the vintage wear for evening. And that makes sense since anyone who follows celebrity fashion usually only gets to see their favorite stars wearing vintage on a red carpet. Who can forget Julia Roberts' stunning vintage Valentino the night she won her Oscar or Penelope Cruz accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a 1950s vintage Balmain masterpiece? Yes, vintage evening wear has tended to survive better through the decades than other pieces because formal affairs happen infrequently. But that doesn't mean that there aren't some plain ol' everyday vintage separates to be found. Check out this eclectic collection of tops and bottoms for vintage fashionistas. Dial Up Spring Style With Vintage Costume Jewelry

Diamonds may be forever but it could take what seems like forever before you can save enough to splurge on them, especially in today's economy. And with gold prices in the stratosphere, what's a fashionista to do? Turn to vintage costume jewelry! Instead of spending money on new clothes this season, why not try adding a handful of unique vintage jewelry pieces to punch up the items already hanging in your closet? By choosing rhinestones over diamonds, baked enamel over turquoise, and semi-precious stones over precious stones, you can razzle and dazzle on a much lower budget without sacrificing an ounce of style. Plus, if you select wisely, you might even see a 10-15% gain in value as the years pass by. Just click the slideshow for a hand-picked selection of great vintage costume jewelry choices.
