Saks Fifth Avenue Hosts Contemporary Accessories Breakfast In NYC

    image

Bagels and lox might be many people's preferred morning meal but on Thursday, October 15, the menu was bagels and Botkier as Saks Fifth Avenue hosted a special contemporary accessories breakfast for bloggers at their Fifth Avenue flagship store. New pieces from Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chan Luu, Rebecca Minkoff, and Belle by Sigerson Morrison, among others, were just some of the tasty choices on order. Beyond the inspired idea of collectively featuring shoes and handbags to compare and contrast each designer's work, what the event also helped highlight is how very heavily labels are relying on accessories to carry them through a tough fall and winter: the vast majority of the pieces were both well-designed and functional. Take, for example, Kooba: gone are the whimsical, unwieldy shapes of seasons past, and in their place far more structured, wearable silhouettes in subdued yet elegant colors. There were pops of color within the resort pieces, of course (a patent neon orange Rebecca Minkoff was a fave), but even those items retained a classic sensibility that makes it clear this is a time when people are looking for quality investment pieces that will go the distance in their closets. Practical materials such as rubber, thick leather, and viscose abounded yet no one scrimped on style--and everything remained at a reasonable contemporary price point. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the standouts.

Rock a Bold and Bright Look Like Jordin Sparks

At this year's Teen Choice Awards, Jordin Sparks ventured into more fashion-forward territory with an amazingly bold look that wasn't too over-the-top. Jordin wasn't afraid to stand out on the green carpet, opting for a striking blue strapless dress from Bebe which perfectly accentuated her curves. She gave the neon trend a try with a sleek bright orange clutch from Rebecca Minkoff with matching neon orange nails. She rounded out the mix with a a funky, yet still understated pair of Alexander Wang platform sandals and a gorgeous pair of glitzy earrings from Lee Angel. Take a cue from Jordin and opt for bright and bold pieces to blaze a trail at your next cocktail party. Check out my SLIDESHOW to get the look!

Don't Be A Square, Get Your Hands On A Boxy Handbag!

As if you needed another excuse to splurge on a brand-new purse, there's a new fall bag trend that's bound to take the season by storm. Boxy handbags are cute, compact, and provide for maximum storage with their dimensions, unlike flatter square satchels that hardly allow any real room for your loot. Usable for both day and night, they can be vamped up with stud embellishments or look fun and fall-festive like this bright pumpkin-colored purse. While these boxy bags may not lie flat against your side like your other trusty go-to shoulder bag, their short handle and packed shape are the perfect fit for tucking under your elbow! Flip through the slideshow for my favorite boxy handbags for fall!

Rock A Casual-Chic Safari Style Like Sophia Bush

To celebrate the OPen Campus Launch Party in LA, "One Tree Hill" star Sophia Bush rocked a casual-chic summer style. Sophia paired a variety of neutral-hued items together including a lightweight brown cardigan, plaid white tank, army green short, and tan criss-cross strap Miu Miu platform sandals. She gave this safari-inspired style an updated twist with a standout multi-chain necklace and sleek metallic clutch. Neutrals have been one of the strongest summer trends and will continue to dominate well into the fall. Sophia's look was fuss-free, wearable, and casual but still incredibly chic and can easily transition from day to night. Check out my SLIDESHOW to get the look!

Good Girl Gone Bad: 10 Floral Looks That Aren't Quite So Nice

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jul 13, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
If you don't pay much attention to fashion, certain trends can appear confusing. That floral dress/leather jacket combo? Cute, but misleading. Sure, floral dresses are feminine and dainty, but leather jackets send forth an entirely different message, and so the untrained eye is left wondering just what was going through your head when you got dressed, which could be any of the following:

    a) You feel the need to wear elements that together create juxtaposition.
    b) You don't want to look too sweet or too tough, so you combine the two and look confused.
    c) You were cold.

Or maybe it's none of the above and I just completely over-analyzed the entire scenario (oops). But given that unexpected pairings are what make fashion so captivating, there's nothing wrong with sending a totally confusing, what-on-earth-is-she-wearing message from time to time, and with all of these embellished floral pieces I've been seeing, sending that message is easier and more stylish than ever-- think studs, zippers, chains, and buckles wreaking all sorts of havoc on the sweetest of florals. Rag & Bone's Spring/Summer 2009 collection said it best with a black leather/silk floral sheath dress that was equal parts feminine and fierce. Click on the slideshow for 10 more floral pieces that aren't interested in playing nice.
