    Influential International Style: M.I.A.

    image

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam broke into the music scene in 2004 and is simply impossible to forget, because of her lyrics, both catchy and intense ("All I wanna do is... BANG BANG BANG BANG"), and her unique style. M.I.A. seems to take style inspiration from all areas of her life - whether it's her love of prints coming from her past as a graphic designer, or drawing a love of dyeing techniques from her Sri Lankan decent. Her style is incredibly unique - and she puts things together the way no one else would, with a surprising mix of color, crazy textures and a great love of neon and shiny material. To get even close to M.I.A.'s signature style, you'll have to mix it up - bold bangles with loose-fitting neon shirts over shiny leggings with some bright kicks. Top it off with a hat and you're on your way. Check out my slideshow for some great ideas on how to get started incorporating M.I.A.'s look in to your personal style!

Style Flashback: Lisa Turtle From 'Saved by the Bell'

Jessie Spano was the brains and Kelly Kapowski was the beauty, but it was Lisa Turtle who had all the style. Saved by the Bell's resident style expert and gossip queen was sassy with sophisticated taste -- heck, she was even accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology on the show's finale. But could we pull off her over-the-top look? To the rescue with some tips on making it work: our in-house fashion expert Brian. Brian says Lisa's wild style is back in a big way with graphic fit-and-flare dresses and light-wash denim jackets. Turn down the volume on her high-intensity style by sticking to tamer prints with fewer colors. Check out more of Lisa Turtle's style by clicking over to our friends at Lemondrop!

Forever Plaid: Wear This Season's Preferred Print

    image

It's something we've all got somewhere in our wardrobe -- mainly because plaid could quite possibly be one of the most versatile five letter words in fashion. The thick and thin lines crossing each other in contrasting colors dating back to the first bag-pipers can be dug back out of the closet -- with the right pairings, plaid can say a lot about your style. While some moments of seasons past are too horrible to return to, the look of plaid flannel shirts that dominated the nineties are an acceptable role model for today's trends. With motifs from comfortable to casual, plaid makes looking cute natural and effortless. Add a pair of light-wash jeans, and plaid's preppy; add a bow, and plaid's sweet. Draw attention to yourself with whichever plaid personality you want to flaunt this season and take a peek at the slideshow for ideas!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Diane von Furstenberg

    image

I always come away from a Diane von Furstenberg show (ok, ok, a DvF "picture viewing") with more ideas than both my head and wallet can handle: tons of hair accessory inspiration, the sudden urge mix patterns without abandon, and perhaps most notably, a completely overstuffed wish list. Her Spring/Summer 2010 show at New York Fashion Week was no exception- the looks presented a highly wearable, more elegant take on globetrotter style with looks ranging from printed dresses layered under belted safari jackets to saturated desert-hued separates in a variety of textures, all topped off with colorful bangles and the most playfully whimsical hairpieces. Her use of patterns was astoundingly imaginative- blurry florals, gilded ethnic designs, and slightly abstract animal prints made for a collection that was adventurous and refined all at once, not to mention realistic-- whether intentional or not, the idea of layering a simple grey tee under an embellished dress exhibits the kind of stylish versatility we can all appreciate these days. Color blocking and tried and true solids are great for numerous occasions, but cosmic powers have stated that prints are the way to go! Prints add interest to an outfit and are a good way to show your personal taste and style. An all-over tribal print dress really makes a statement while a printed scarf is a subtle nod to the trend. Prints and patterns are all over the place from runways to retail stores and are offered in a wide array of looks that either add a sweetly feminine spin or show trendy hipster style. Florals, ethnic prints, polka dots... they're all cute, but not every print works for everyone! So while that floral print skirt looks great on your best friend, you may be more suited for a funky tribal pattern. With all the options out there, how do you find the time to try them all on? Let the stars guide you to the perfect print that flatters and shows your own unique fashion sense. Check out the slideshow and see what prints you should try this week!
