Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Luli Fama

My first thoughts upon seeing this year's Luli Fama swimwear collection? Pageant bikini competition protestors obviously have never seen one of her runways! Decked out in fluffy sausage curls (sounds like something at IHOP, I know), plenty of red lipstick, and exuding the feminine confidence of Rosie the Riveter, the show's models were a perfect balance of girlie-sexy and in-your-face tough, putting a fresh new spin on the pin-up girl that frankly could probably kick your butt. The collection itself boasted a fun and flirty variety of retro prints like black-and-white polka dots with modern twists like neon ruffled trim.. and of course the looks wouldn't be complete without red pearl necklaces, giving the collection a sort of overall "June Cleaver lets her hair down" vibe. Vintage Fashionistas Are Seeing Spots

Some of the most recognizable polka dot outfits haven't adorned statuesque models on fashion runways but rather a very famous two-dimensional celebrity: Miss Minerva Mouse--you know her better as Minnie. This beloved Walt Disney character often sported polka dots on her frocks and well, she got her man didn't she? Of course, I'm not suggesting that we should start taking our fashion cues from cartoon characters, but we shouldn't discount the power of the polka dot either. They're a sure-fire way to stand out among this season's sea of strong graphic prints and well, they're just good ol' fashioned fun! And yes, this dotted pattern was named after the polka dance, but it's perfectly acceptable to wear the fashionable spots even if you have two left feet. Just click the slideshow and pick your favorite from this collection of vintage polka dot finds.

Channel A Pin-Up Bathing Beauty With A One-Piece Retro Swimsuit!

Whether it's the poorly lit dressing rooms with funhouse-like mirrors or finding styles you swear only Amazonian size 2 supermodels can wear, almost everyone I know has a terrible time shopping for swimsuits for their upcoming spring break trips or summer vacations. And when you do find the one you love, having to change your figure just to wear it totally takes the fun out of summer. So I was watching old film clips of swimming film star Esther Williams just the other day and thought the retro swimwear styles would suit many figures today! The lowcut legs and sweetheart necklines look good on almost everyone and one-piece bathing suits can help hide any little bumps you don't want anyone to see. Speaking of Esther Williams, get a polka-dotted swimsuit made by her company! For a totally modern and retro look, take a look at this cut-out style swimsuit by American Eagle. Next time you're lounging by the poolside, think of Dita von Teese or Bettie Page, don a bit of glam red lipstick and be the cool and classic pin-up girl everyone will envy! Click the slideshow to see more retro one-piece swimsuits you'll look forward to wearing.

Get The Scoop On Comme Des Garcons For H&M!

By now you've probably heard about the Comme Des Garcons for H&M collection that's slated to hit stores mid-November. You may have even heard about the $350 dress- a bargain if you realize that amount might get you the right sleeve of an actual CdG dress. In any event, we're excited to see how Rei Kawakubo's playful but high fashion design philosophy translates into the H&M mass market. Seasoned shoppers will recall the frenzy caused by previous designer capsule collections- Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf, and Roberto Cavalli, to name a few- but questionable pricing aside, a quick glimpse at the lookbook has me convinced this line will top them all. Check out my slideshow for the looks that are worth braving the hoards of shoppers who will fight tooth and manicured nail for a piece of the collection, along with the four hour drive you might endure just to get there in the first place. Lines not your thing? Don't worry, I'm sure there will be plenty of polka dot wristlets left over..

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Pistol Panties

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for anything retro. From pin-ups like Bettie Page and Dita von Teese to paintings by Alberto Vargas, I love them all. Best of all, they're a great source of inspiration for swimwear! For the latest swimwear collection from Pistol Panties, it's easy to see all the retro pin-up references! Deborah Fleming, the British/Colombian designer behind Pistol Panties is committed to designing "glamorous swimwear to make you feel like a superstar." In fact, Deborah's first job was designing costumes for film and theater where she found vintage film costumes as inspiration. I can imagine almost every swimsuit flattering all shapes and sizes (which is quite a feat!). A variety of prints were featured from classic polka-dots and houndstooth to a bold print that reminded me of stained glass windows. Some of my favorite looks had giant floppy hats which provide much needed sun protection and privacy on the beach. It's hard to please everyone, but I think Pistol Panties may have done it!
