Vintage Fashionistas Pay Tribute To The Queen Of Swimwear

    image

Rose Marie Reid was the Queen of Swimwear in the 1950s, ruling an empire that produced 10,000 suits a day and posted sales of $14 million by 1958! Women loved her knack for hiding figure flaws and it was Rose Marie Reid who pioneered the use of tummy control panels, wire bra cups and the boning and adjustable straps that we enjoy in modern swimwear today. Plus she was a woman who stood by her convictions. Because she was Mormon, she refused to design immodest bathing suits. So while her company did ultimately create bikinis, Rose Marie Reid refused to participate in their design. For vintage fashionistas, an early authentic Rose Marie Reid swimsuit is a coveted find. Click the slideshow to see a fab little selection of her designs!

Say Hello To Retro Cut Swim Suits!

Despite what may be going on in Brazil, the trend this spring isn't squint-and-you'll-miss-it bikinis. This summer it's all about the pinup-girl-inspired swimwear: high-waisted bikinis, sweetheart necklines and hourglass silhouettes. These vintage inspired bikinis are perfect for playing some beach blanket bingo or hitting the hottest luau. Inspired by fabulous pin up girls of the 50's and surf goddesses of the 60's these bikinis have a sweetly sexy vibe, proving that sometimes less skin is more. Elizabeth O'Brien Berg, a line based out of Brooklyn, NY is a great line of vintage inspired cut swimsuits. The suits are cute, sexy, retro, ruffled, and slightly vampy. Even Victoria's Secret has hopped on the retro sexy trend with great and affordable suits. If you have a boyish figure, look for suits with a high-waisted bottoms to give you that hourglass shape. Lacking a bit on top? These retro bikinis with ruffles and bows on top are perfect to give a little oommph. Check out the SLIDESHOW to view more modern-day pinup style bikinis in stores.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Pistol Panties

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for anything retro. From pin-ups like Bettie Page and Dita von Teese to paintings by Alberto Vargas, I love them all. Best of all, they're a great source of inspiration for swimwear! For the latest swimwear collection from Pistol Panties, it's easy to see all the retro pin-up references! Deborah Fleming, the British/Colombian designer behind Pistol Panties is committed to designing "glamorous swimwear to make you feel like a superstar." In fact, Deborah's first job was designing costumes for film and theater where she found vintage film costumes as inspiration. I can imagine almost every swimsuit flattering all shapes and sizes (which is quite a feat!). A variety of prints were featured from classic polka-dots and houndstooth to a bold print that reminded me of stained glass windows. Some of my favorite looks had giant floppy hats which provide much needed sun protection and privacy on the beach. It's hard to please everyone, but I think Pistol Panties may have done it!
