Add A Light Layer To Your Summer Look With A Draped Vest

    image
Amber Fijolek on Aug 18, 2009 4:23 PM PDT
Sometimes all those layers can get a little stuffy... especially during summer. But you don't have to skip out on that draped and layered look when you've got a vest to hang on your shoulders. Add a hip piece that won't keep you sweltering with a long vest that wraps your shoulders like a scarf. Paired with summer staples like shorts and tank tops, it's a cute and comfortable alternative to your fitted button-up vests, but the look of a sleeveless cardigan sweater makes this vest a more casual layer. Some drape over like a curtain, lending a richer and more delicate style. These accessories will prove even more valuable on a chilly night, as well as into the fall season when you actually will need something to shelter your shoulders. Check out the long vests in this slideshow and treat your trendy self to an edgy, layered look!

One thing that can often be taken for granted is music. Even if your own musical talent only extends to playing "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder, music is still bound to be a big part of your life. What would you do on your morning commute without a handful of stations to flip through? How would you ever get through your daily workout without your trusty iPod (aside from watching reruns of The Hills on the gym TV sets, of course)? Summer's the time to kick back, relax, and show your appreciation for some sweet tunes on the road, at the beach, or... on your earlobes? Aries girls will channel their inner acoustic rock goddess with guitar pick earrings from Fred Flare and Scorpios can DJ on the go (or at least attempt to) with a portable USB turntable! Check the slideshow for your sign's pick of music-inspired clothes, jewelry, and accessories!

Trendy Tie-Dyed Pieces That Don't Look Like You Made Them At ...

What is it about tie-dye that seems to just ooze summer spirit? I don't know if it's the bright colors or the fond memories of wringing out freshly-dipped t-shirts on the backyard lawn, but I was always secretly rooting for a tie-dye comeback that didn't look too homemade or too hippie. As if the almighty trendsetters read my mind (it's about time!), tie-dye has been sprouting up all over the place -- high-end and affordable retailers alike -- in every place imaginable, from shoes to shades! While stereotypically the print has always been associated with peace signs, flower children, and campy arts and crafts, this season it's keeping it casual with thong sandals and dressing it up in the form of sexy minidresses. Still not convinced? Take a look at the slideshow and see for yourself how today's tie-dye has gone from hippie to hip!

Get Distressed And Ripped Denim For Summer

    image

It seems like only yesterday that we were all wearing flannel and ripped denim (remember the grunge scene of the early 90s?). I used to go down those rough cement slides in the park to get the perfect distressed look. Those days are long gone, but ripped denim is no one hit wonder! We've seen celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Victoria Beckham wear their ripped jeans in style. From super short shorts to flirty skirts and jeans in different cuts, there's a ripped style just for you. You can get a super destroyed jean with big holes and tears like this bleached pair from Oak. If you're like me and like a more subtle look, pay attention to pieces with distressed edges and smaller rips and tears. After all, those little rips can always be made into bigger ones. Check out my slideshow for more ripped denim, from less than $15 to $200, that you'll want to rock all summer long.

Springy Men's Scarves Move To The Lightweight Division

    image

In essence, a scarf is one of two things: 1) a piece of fabric that you wrap around your neck to keep you warm or 2) a decorative item that hangs on your neck like garland on a Christmas tree. For the spring and summer seasons, the latter is what we look for. Ultimately, a scarf in the warmer season doesn't really serve a purpose. I have a lightweight scarf that I wore on a nice sunny day and no matter how warm I got, I refused to take it off because it pulled the outfit together in a way no other accessory can. Also, I didn't want to expose my neck in fear that it would be grotesquely sweaty. Nonetheless, lightweight scarves for the warmer seasons work well when the fabric is breathable and when it is wrapped loosely around your neck with dapper flair. For something a little simpler, opt for any of American Apparel's sheer jersey scarves. If you're going for that urban bandit look, Urban Outfitters can make you look like the ultimate hipster. And if you really wanna go all out, Phillip Lim's beaded silk scarf can turn a bunch of heads. Check out the slideshow for more man-friendly scarves.
