If You Haven't Seen "The September Issue," Here's Why You Should

Anna Wintour. Just her name can cause successful designers and big-shots in the fashion industry to tremble slightly in their butter-soft Italian leather boots. The well-known, cold, and demanding character of Miranda Priestly from "The Devil Wears Prada" was said to have been based not so loosely around Anna Wintour. Of course, when they announced "The September Issue" was coming out, all fashionable females and style-savvy men were more than a little excited- a real look into the conception and making of, arguably, the world's most famous fashion magazine, often unofficially referred to as the Bible of Fashion Magazines? At first, you'd almost almost expect the documentary to showcase Anna barking orders, tearing apart people's hard work and making life in general miserable to all those around her, just because she can. While there are instances where she leans towards behaving much like her fictional movie counterpart, you get to see a surprisingly softer side of Anna that includes genuine smiles and sincere praises. You get a glimpse into her personal life with input from her daughter and candid comments about her family, revealing they don't take her role in fashion quite as seriously as many of us do. You get to see that her ruthless, no-nonsense attitude comes more from a need to be efficient in a hectic, ever-changing, fast-paced world and that, despite the fact that she may eliminate many seemingly great ideas and projects born from blood, sweat and tears, there is no malicious intent behind it and that she does indeed have a great eye for what makes an issue 'perfect.' Most importantly, you realize that, although she is aware of her status in the fashion industry, she truly appreciates those around her that have raw talent and help make Vogue what it is today, like long-time colleague and friend, Grace Coddington, and that she believes in new talent, like her help with promoting Thakoon. So if you consider yourself a fashionably knowledgeable individual, I recommend that you hurry to see this movie and let it open your eyes!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Tory Burch

Designer Tory Burch's decision to opt for a presentation over a runway seemed to grant her Spring 2010 collection more justice- a fact I attribute to the attention to detail and the role of texture in her collections, elements often lost in the movement and spotlight of a runway show. This season was all about casual elegance-- printed shorts with blazers and button down shirts with skirts were on repeat, and the sequined dress/nylon anorak pairing was perhaps the coolest way to get that "oh, I just threw this on" look everyone seems to be after. In terms of texture, its use was limitless-- scalloped embroidered shorts, perforated skirts and jackets, playful boucle coordinates, and unconventionally placed pleating added up to one collection we can't wait to get our hands on. Celebs Strut Their Stuff In Catwalk Creations

There used to be a clearer distinction between models and actresses. You could do both, but usually one skill set was stronger than the other. These days, though, many of our favorite celebs are gracing the covers of magazines and pages of photo-shoots in positions that used to be mainly reserved for the models. Celebrity faces are seen all over the place now in venues and mediums outside of movies and movie promotions. Being seen and celebrated for their art (music and movies) was one thing, but now people are turning to celebs for style sense and fashion tips. Logically, celebrities are answering by stepping out in trendy ensembles taken straight from the runway and parading themselves around for their adoring public. Diva superstar, Beyonce rocks this sparkly Balmain dress and it looks a lot better on her than it does on the model! Check out the slideshow for more celebs strutting their stuff in runway creations! Which ones looked better on the celeb than the model? You be the judge!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Mara Hoffman

    image

Mara Hoffman put on an exceptionally colorful show (along with co-presenters and fellow People's Revolution designers Nicholas K and Whitney Port) on day two of the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at New York Fashion Week. Elegantly draped watercolor maxidresses and super short voluminous minis added variety to the bohemian-inspired collection, which also featured masculine elements like boyfriend blazers and tuxedo jackets. Noteworthy looks included a not quite neon yellow ruched mini paired with a floaty printed top, and a beautifully constructed resort style gown paired with tough-chic gladiator heels. Body-conscious skirts, one-shouldered dresses, and tribally influenced patterns don't seem to be going away anytime soon, but when they look this good, why should they? Click the slideshow to see more from Mara Hoffman at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.
