Make Over Your Beauty Routine With These Must-Have Tools!

    image
Alex Gambardella on Nov 12, 2009 2:38 PM PST
You might think you've got your beauty routine under control... or even if your cosmetics collection is a huge mess, you insist you've got a daily system down that works for you (in other words, there's a method to your makeup madness). However, what if I told you that there were simple, easy-to-use tools that could cut your grooming time in half, make the makeup you already have look twice as good, or at least make application a whole lot easier? Even subtle changes, like trading your drugstore tweezers for a better pair that will put your old pair to shame or investing in a train case to keep all your beauty loot neatly organized, can make a big difference in the efficiency of your beauty regime and motivate you to clear out all your prehistoric makeup tools and swap 'em for a compact set of modern must-haves. You might be able to live just fine without the latest beauty technology, but you don't know what you're missing until you test it out! Forget crazy vibrating mascaras and at-home airbrushing systems -- take a look at the slideshow for the 8 most practical, user-friendly beauty tools I swear by!

Dorm Wall Decor To Add Pizzazz To Your Side Of The Room!

    image

As much as you'd like to deny it, it's time to pack those bags and head back to school! Whether you're shacking up on campus in the dorms, going solo in your own apartment, or looking forward to a packed year in the sorority house, those blank walls can look pretty unfriendly. Even if you're not the homesick type, jazzing up your empty wall space can do wonders in making you feel more at home in your new school-year pad, and you're likely to find that even the most cramped or most run-down of places are a whole lot more bearable with a little added personality. Look back on fond memories of last summer while you have new fun times in the fall with a wall photo sleeve, or mark your limited territory over on your side of the tiny dorm room with an initial marquee light fixture. No matter what cool and trendy wall decor you throw up, it may never be a four-star resort, but hey -- it's home! Check the slideshow for some of my favorite fun and quirky wall hang-ups!

    Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall...

Let's be honest -- we all kind of love checking ourselves out. Whether we're sneaking a peek in the reflection of a street-side window, or openly (well, privately, really) gussying up to dance and sing in front of an imagined-audience-of-many, mirrors play an important part in our lives. Hell, I'm not sure many of us could go a day without seeing a mirror at some point. The best mirrors, however, are ones that are beautiful on their own, without the help of our lovely selves standing in front of them. And the best of mirror-makers are those that consider themselves artists, creating wonderful masterpieces that sometimes seem better fit in a gallery than, say, above your bathroom sink. Turn your home into a gallery that bills your face as the main attraction with the interesting accents that these artists have designed to make these mirrors of our pretty faces. Check out this slideshow to take a peek at some of the coolest mirrors out there!

Hot In The Hive: Guerlain Jewel Lipstick Compact

    image
Alex Gambardella on May 19, 2009 6:21 AM PDT
One quick glimpse of the inside of my purse is all it takes to figure out that it's really just a big makeup bag in disguise. Every time I leave the house for anything more than just a quick trip to the grocery store, I can't help but just grab every beauty product I put on that day (which can include but is not necessarily limited to: bulky foundation/blush/bronzer compacts, two or three pots of shadow, mascara, brow and eyeliner pencils, lipgloss...) -- I was a Girl Scout and therefore I will always compulsively be prepared! But I have to admit, hefting around all those products can be pretty ridiculous, not to mention realistically unnecessary on roughly 95% of the outings I bring them along. One solution (other than getting a grip on myself and only bringing the bare-bones must-haves) is consolidation, which is exactly what Guerlain had in mind when they invented their handy Jewel Lipstick Compact. Instead of the dinky reflective mirrored end of those lipsticks that boast a "built-in mirror" that hardly actually proves useful at all, Guerlain's case actually both opens up to reveal a full-on compact mirror. Sleek, functional, and it's got a pretty sweet spaceship-looking design... except this rocket can actually fit in your pocket. It's a little on the pricey side, but with its high-quality formula and all the valuable space you'll spare in your purse, what's not to love?

    Price: $45

Video Style Steal: Go GaGa Over Ladylike Interpretations Of ...

Whether or not you're a fan of her futuristic, robot-like, pantsless persona, you can't deny that Lady GaGa is an interesting character (after all, anyone who can make Perez stop talking about the Octo-Mom for a few posts has to be at least somewhat intriguing). With electro-pop hits like "Just Dance," "Poker Face," and any of the other sound-alike tracks off her debut album The Fame, GaGa has gained a rapidly-growing following. While I certainly don't question the appeal of her catchy beats (although I'm still trying to figure out what on Earth a "disco stick" is), I'm thoroughly convinced that her talked-all-over-town popularity is due largely in part to her bizarre outfit choices and overall "Donatella Versace in outer space" gimmick. And while we at Stylehive would never promote public indecency by encouraging you to go without pants in public, you may be surprised to see just how inspirational some of Lady GaGa's futuristic fashion choices really are, as long as you don't attempt a literal translation of her shiny black catsuits and hooded capes. From practical patent leather booties to a chunky cocktail ring and a simple pair of liquid leggings, you can channel the artist's funky style (one bold piece at a time!) and still stop traffic without looking like a spaceship! Click "See Video" to watch her provocatively funky "Poker Face" vid, then check out the slideshow to see some wearable translations of her eccentric ensembles!

The fashion words du jour that have been flying around the newspapers and blogs include "recessionista" and "recession chic," but it doesn't mean it's just a fleeting trend. One of my shopping mantras is this- why pay full price when you can wait a little while and get a HUGE deal? As they always say, good things come to those who wait. Take a look at this fleur-de-lis scroll mirror and this super cool angled shadowbox. Best part is that they're both 60% off the original price! Ready to decorate your home and do your part in jumpstarting the economy? Check out my SLIDESHOW for the best home decor deals in the Hive.
