Tote A Messenger Bag As Your Chic Fall Carry-All

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Aug 14, 2009 12:18 PM PDT
Each year, usually right before fall, I get a hankering for a new handbag, regardless of how recently I purchased my last one. They're just so fun to build outfits around and I hate to hinder my creativity, you know? Right now I'm all about messenger bags- I'm picturing one crafted out of buttery leather, maybe a tad distressed for that vintage look, and preferably in a neutral hue- chocolate brown, khaki, even dove grey would be lovely. The style is undeniably classic and yet alluring at the same time, and the brand is nowhere to be seen (with the exception of a small amount of indicative hardware, in some cases). Larger ones add a seriously urban element to business ensembles, while smaller types lend effortless appeal to androgynous and feminine styles alike. My personal favorite way to wear one of these schoolboy-esque satchels? Strapped across the body, over none other than a flouncy party dress. Be a Man! Carry a Murse.

For those of you who don't know, a "murse" is a man purse €“ but the key to rockin' one is to make it NOT look like a purse. I swear, I am just not diggin' it when I see urban hipster males gallivanting around the city with a tote on their shoulder. It makes them look like a Golden Girl rather than a metro-chic male. But I digress. I have been an advocate of the murse for a while now, and I am going to continue my murse campaign. There are many men out there who have to carry more than just a wallet with them when they head out to the concrete jungle. Ultimately, a murse is a messenger bag. They are functional, stylish, and suitable for an ambitious (or veteran) go-getter in the city who isn't ready for a droning financial district briefcase. Vertical bags seem to be the thing with murses right now €“ so get them while they're hot. If you want to play it safer, sling a classic messenger bag around your shoulder. Or, if the murse has handles, carry it by your side like a suitcase €“ just don't hang it on your shoulder like a Chloe purse. Check out the SLIDESHOW for some you can gnaw on.

Admit it: You're a tried-and-true multi-tasker. There is no errand so complex that you can't simultaneously catch up with your besties on your cell phone. You've bought shoes while rehashing last night's date on your phone, tried on sunglasses while making dinner plans with three friends across town, and picked out your new iPhone...while gabbing on your old iPhone. So you know that few things are as frustrating as helplessly watching your phone battery die a speedy death as you chat your way around town. Chic, solar bags to the rescue! Solar bags use the sun's energy--those sweltering summer days are good for something!--To recharge cell phones and computers, even when you're on the go. Swing one of these stylish numbers on your shoulder and you'll never be faced with the horror of old fashioned single-tasking again. Click on the SLIDESHOW to check them out!

Bag of the Week: The Marc by Marc Jacobs Posh Turnlock Messenger

    image

Mark my words, the 1980s-style purse will be worn cross-body in fall 2008. Not quite a messenger, although that's how you'll see it classified on many sites, the medium-sized purse on an ultra-long leather strap looks effortless. It's that "hello, I woke up and this ensemble just came to mind" effect. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Posh Turnlock Messenger is a great option because you can adjust the length of the strap, should you feel the need to go counter-trend and wear it as a classic purse with a shorter strap length. This is one of those bags you never really get bored of and most likely will take out every 5 years or so. Another fall fashion look, it has the long chain strap €“ which looks even more stylish and new to me. There are more like this from Foley + Corinna, Ananas and Rebecca Minkoff. I'll be doing a roundup on www.BagTrends.com in early August on this trend. Stay tuned!

Today۪s Hive finds cite the Mother of all Mothers as their muse. Pulling inspiration from nature, the West Elm d̩cor, the Karic & Galehr jewelry, and Gemnorde necklace are wonderfully raw, yet playful. And a Frock tunic dress and Yves Saint Laurent messenger bag are perfect accomplices. You'll be so moved that you run out into a field and lay in it all day. I did.

18th Day of Xmas: All I Want for Christmas is Something For ...

This year, just say no to the standard tie, cufflink, and card gifts for the man in your life. And please, please avoid the murse (yes, thats right, the man-purse). Trust me, he may tell you he loves the murse, but really, it's the equivalent of those horrible fruitcakes that come in the mail every year. To take the guessing game out of finding the perfect gift for the guy-who-has-everything, I've compiled a list of essentials that every man needs, but may not already have.
