Where the Boys Are: Women's Lace-Up Brogues

    image

For a couple of weeks now I've seen a few women here and there wearing what appears to be their boyfriends' shoes. So I looked it up on Google, and sure enough, it's a real thing, an actual trend for fall and winter. It makes sense in context, I guess -- with all the gender-bending fashion we're seeing now and in the coming season, shoes were bound to follow at some point. Personally, I like my shoes comfortable, so this is a welcome change of direction as far as I'm concerned. Of course, you don't have to raid a man's closet in order to get the look; lots of designers are doing shoes for women that are inspired by styles that have traditionally belonged to men. Check out these Christian Louboutin "Fred" Patent Leather Lace Up Jazz Shoes, cute as a button. Imagine pairing these up with a your favorite Current Elliott boyfriend jeans. Could be very, very cute if played the right way.

For Less Than $50, You Can Stop Raiding Your Boyfriend's ...

Women have been secretly raiding their boyfriends' and husbands' closets for ages now. Finally, fashion has caught on and this trend, though relatively new, has been around for a few seasons which is ancient in the fashion world, and probably means it's going to stick around for awhile. Boyfriend jeans, tees, and blazers have become very popular and it's sure to stick around this fall and winter. With all the extra coverage and layers needed to keep you warm, staying stylish at the same time can prove to be a little more of a challenge. Our boyfriends' closets, with their blazers, cardigans, jeans, and tees, are full or inspiration for staying fashionably cozy this fall, but he'll be wanting to wear his own clothes for the same reasons! Check out the slideshow for some great boyfriend-inspired pieces for $50 or less that you can add to your own closet, instead of stealing from his!

Brogues And Oxfords Get Flirty And Feminine!

Taking items that are typically associated with menswear and making them feminine is no novel idea when it comes to modern day fashion. We've seen it in every context from sexy tailored suits on the red carpet to boyfriend blazers on your average night out on the town. However, the latest trend in menswear-gone-girlie is here to serve as a welcome addition to your shoe collection, just in time for fall. Brogues and oxfords, though traditionally men's dress shoes, have certainly been worn by the ladies before... just not nearly as fashionably or with the same feminine edge as the latest styles provide! Studs, cut-outs, and bright colors vamp up the normally conservative-looking shoe, making them far more chic than what you'd stereotypically find worn by a butler. True, the whole idea of open toes and modern embellishments sort of negates the very definition of a brogue, but hey -- with modifications this cute, we won't toss them based on a silly technicality! Check the slideshow for some of my favorite oxford-inspired pairs!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ontfront

    image

Initially started in 2005 as a platform for young designers and artists, Ontfront didn't take long to get swept up by the fashion scene. The line found its niche in a creative and functional fusion of urban streetwear and professionalism known as Sidewalk Tailoring. Nowadays, Ontfront is a statement and huge success within the Amsterdam fashion and club scene. National and international fashion-forward celebrities like Emmy Award nominated DJ Diplo and Musiq Soulchild are dressed in some of their designs. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Ontfront showed at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, they continued to impress with the theme "Tonight is the Knight," which was evident by their brawny statures and iron gloves. The diverse collection was said to be inspired by the brave medieval knight, with the sophistication of comfortable heroism for the modern-day cavalier. With a collection of fitted tees and polos, button-down shirts and tailored suits, the designs certainly broke the mold of modern menswear with its fresh and edgy details. Check the slideshow for pictures of Ontfront's stylish knight parade!

Shoes this fall take a nod to classic menswear with oxfords and spectator takes. I love these the Scarf-Tied Oxfords ($128) and the Tri-Tone Spectators ($208) both from Anthropologie. The look sharp with a great pair of pants! Here are more menswear-inspired shoes: Tory Burch Romy Ballet Flat ($235 at Neiman Marcus) Deena & Ozzy Patent Oxford Wedge ($58 at Urban Outfitters).
