Where the Boys Are: Women's Lace-Up Brogues

    image

For a couple of weeks now I've seen a few women here and there wearing what appears to be their boyfriends' shoes. So I looked it up on Google, and sure enough, it's a real thing, an actual trend for fall and winter. It makes sense in context, I guess -- with all the gender-bending fashion we're seeing now and in the coming season, shoes were bound to follow at some point. Personally, I like my shoes comfortable, so this is a welcome change of direction as far as I'm concerned. Of course, you don't have to raid a man's closet in order to get the look; lots of designers are doing shoes for women that are inspired by styles that have traditionally belonged to men. Check out these Christian Louboutin "Fred" Patent Leather Lace Up Jazz Shoes, cute as a button. Imagine pairing these up with a your favorite Current Elliott boyfriend jeans. Could be very, very cute if played the right way.

For Less Than $50, You Can Stop Raiding Your Boyfriend's ...

Women have been secretly raiding their boyfriends' and husbands' closets for ages now. Finally, fashion has caught on and this trend, though relatively new, has been around for a few seasons which is ancient in the fashion world, and probably means it's going to stick around for awhile. Boyfriend jeans, tees, and blazers have become very popular and it's sure to stick around this fall and winter. With all the extra coverage and layers needed to keep you warm, staying stylish at the same time can prove to be a little more of a challenge. Our boyfriends' closets, with their blazers, cardigans, jeans, and tees, are full or inspiration for staying fashionably cozy this fall, but he'll be wanting to wear his own clothes for the same reasons! Check out the slideshow for some great boyfriend-inspired pieces for $50 or less that you can add to your own closet, instead of stealing from his!

Menswear-Inspired Trousers Are Sexy For Fall '09

    image

While I love all the options that women's fashion brings, sometimes I wish it was just a little bit easier. On those cold and dark mornings I am so jealous of the guys who can just wake up and throw on some nice pressed trousers and crisp shirt and look sharp. Good thing menswear trousers are super chic for fall '09, and these aren't your basic work pants either. Keep your cuffed, wide-leg, crease-front pants in rotation, they're perfect work basics but pants are going way beyond the basic this fall. To take the menswear pants from day to night, try experimenting with some luxe fabrics and fashion-forward shapes, like the cropped tapered trouser, one of fall's hot silhouettes. They're loose around the hips but skim the calf and show a little sexy skin at the ankle. No matter which way you go, please ladies, don't steal them directly from the boys department. It's all about the fit here, and men's pants are cut to fit all our of lovely lady lumps. Check out the SLIDESHOW to see some sexy menswear-inspired trousers that will have the boys lining up behind you.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ralph Lauren

    image

This season, Ralph Lauren was back with the classically preppy looks we've come to expect from the designer (variations on the blazer, lust-worthy dresses), but included quite a few unexpectedly refreshing ones as well. I loved how many ensembles erred on the side of masculinity- for example, one was comprised of boyfriend jeans and a menswear-inspired shirt, then topped off with a blazer, beret, and chunky belt, only to be offset by a pair of glistening t-strap heels. Combined with natural-looking makeup and unfussy hair, each look was all the more believable. Quirky, tattered denim overalls were about as surprising to see as the head to toe denim look, but the "fresh from the farm" approach added a relaxed vibe to the typically put-together show. Crisp white layers were followed by sheer separates in cool blues, and a particularly striking iridescent floor-length shirt dress was just the thing to finish off a collection perfect for achieving that chic but not overly calculated country club look. See the slideshow for more from the Ralph Lauren runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!

How Do You Prefer Brad: White-Hot Or Dark & Handsome?

    image
Alex Gambardella on Aug 15, 2009 9:23 AM PDT
This past week has been a big one for Brad Pitt (then again, when isn't it a good week to be Brad Pitt?) with the recent Hollywood premiere of his latest film, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. Decked out in head-to-toe black, save for a pair of gold-rimmed aviators and some goatee scruff, he looked sharp as always and accessorized flawlessly with leather-clad Angelina Jolie on his arm for nearly the entire night. Despite all the excitement, he wasn't too busy to lend support to pals Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams at the NYC premiere of The Time Traveler's Wife just two days later -- only this time dressed in head-to-toe white... with a similar pair of aviators and the same scruffy facial hair. Uh, Brad? What's with the monochromatic menswear? While we understand the desire to match and coordinate, that doesn't mean you need to wear all the same color... especially when these suit shades can hardly even be considered "colors!" I guess there's no use complaining -- the man still looks good, no matter how much variation he seems to lack. Personally, I enjoy him most in his wide-open bathrobe in Fight Club, but since that's not an option, vote below on which one-color ensemble you like best: Brad in white or Brad in black? Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ontfront

    image
Fleur VandenBerge on Aug 14, 2009 10:18 AM PDT
Initially started in 2005 as a platform for young designers and artists, Ontfront didn't take long to get swept up by the fashion scene. The line found its niche in a creative and functional fusion of urban streetwear and professionalism known as Sidewalk Tailoring. Nowadays, Ontfront is a statement and huge success within the Amsterdam fashion and club scene. National and international fashion-forward celebrities like Emmy Award nominated DJ Diplo and Musiq Soulchild are dressed in some of their designs. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Ontfront showed at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, they continued to impress with the theme "Tonight is the Knight," which was evident by their brawny statures and iron gloves. The diverse collection was said to be inspired by the brave medieval knight, with the sophistication of comfortable heroism for the modern-day cavalier. With a collection of fitted tees and polos, button-down shirts and tailored suits, the designs certainly broke the mold of modern menswear with its fresh and edgy details. Check the slideshow for pictures of Ontfront's stylish knight parade!
