Get Physical In Fall's Gym-Inspired Looks

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Sep 4, 2009 12:19 PM PDT
You don't have to run marathons or have a relationship with the Stairmaster to appreciate fall's athletic-inspired looks. Just look at Isabel Marant's fall '09 runway, where sweatshirt tees go from gym to glam when paired with layered skirts and embellished ankle boots. Alexander Wang has been taking sweatpants out of the gym for a few seasons now, and given their slouchy, not sloppy cut, they could almost pass as dress pants if worn with heels and a blazer- just don't tell your boss you slept in them the night before. On a budget? American Eagle and Free People can hook you up without the pricey membership. The key is to look for pieces with unexpectedly luxe touches (like cashmere or sequins), or pair casual ones with something more polished- in other words, leave the sneakers at home. How To Sew An Exposed Zipper

    image
Alex Gambardella on Jul 16, 2009 7:20 AM PDT
Nicole Smith is an editor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to fashionable how-tos and do-it-yourself crafts. Below she introduces a fun project in which you can embellish clothing yourself with exposed zippers.

Zippers have come a long way over the years; they're used in everything from garments and shoes to accessories and home decor. You may install a zipper simply to let you in and out of a garment, but why not make it stylish at the same time? In the Spring '09 issue of SewStylish, couture sewer Anna Mazur showed you how to insert zippers four ways. Here is one of the techniques inspired by many designers including Marni. When installing an exposed zipper, you can throw all the zipper-insertion rules out the window. Turn the seam allowances to the right side, topstitch the zipper over them to conceal the fabric edges, and let the zipper tape show on the outside of the garment. You can choose a matching or contrasting zipper for even more stand-out style. Click on over to the CraftStylish blog for the full step-by-step instructions... then get sewing!

No Need To Slum In Sweats With Evenagamba

    image

As a big fan of designers such as Marni and Ter et Bantine, I've always wished that someone would take the deceptively simple cuts and understated artistry of both brands and apply it to casual sportswear. So it was kismet when, a few weeks ago, I was introduced to Evenagamba, a sublime line of sweatshirts by fashion industry veterans Juan Carlos Anglero and Henric Olsson. After stints at Chloe, Emporio Armani, Pamela Dennis, and Kate Spade, among others, the two friends paired up in 2007 to create this sumptuous casual line that represents the sum of their experiences through extensive travel, personal interests, and a love for fashion. Evenagamba takes its name from a Spanish slang term--"gamba"--for a fashion poser, or someone who follows the masses instead of developing their own personal style, something no one will accuse these pieces of lacking. I visited their showroom last week, where I viewed the line personally and was duly floored by both the quality of the pieces and commitment to social responsibility and activism the designers have incorporated into the brand. Each shirt is cut from the finest Pima cotton and comes in rich earth tones; Napa leather accents and seamlessly hidden iPod compartments give the collection a modern, edgy tone; and every piece includes eye-catching lining that is imprinted with a narrative and an image that highlights a current cultural issue. Juan Carlos and Henric are also committed to developing relationships with their suppliers, such as cotton growers in Peru, that extend beyond just a typical exchange of goods and services, and include initiatives to invest in the community as a whole. As Juan Carlos shared, "The lure of doing something for society was just as crucial as creating the line." A stylish, refreshingly original line that "even a gamba" (wink, wink) would wear. Check out the slideshow for Evenagamba's inaugural collection, and visit them online at www.evenagamba.com to shop and for retail locations!

Make A Statement With A Bib Necklace For Spring!

    image

The last time bibs were this cool I was still in a high chair drinking from a sippy cup. But times have changed and this spring, the fashion world has taken on a decidedly grown-up accessory trend: the bib necklace. The statement necklace has gotten a little bit bolder and was a key piece of jewelry in this season's shows, showing up at Vera Wang, Chanel, Marni and Burberry. From itty bitty bibs to full-blown breastplates, there are tons to choose from. Pick a worldly looking beaded collar like Erickson Beamon's "Ring of Stars" choker for a well-traveled ethnic look. For vintage lovers there is the "Big Clermont" necklace by Thea Grant that resembles old jeweled broaches, and if you're on a budget try the "Spring Flora" necklace from Forever 21. Looking for something less 1901 and more like 2021? For a futuristic feel, pick large candy colored plastic beads like Malene Berger's multicolor necklace or a geometric breastplate from Missoni. Whatever you choose, just be sure to keep the neckline of your top is simple or bare...you don't want anything taking away from your signature piece for the season.
