    Wardrobe Jackpot: Boring Stores, Reinvented!

    image

This recession totally sucks. But, if you ignore the unemployment rate and rising cost of beer, some good is definitely coming from it. And one of those positives is the fact that the plummeting sales of retail chains has caused them to re-evaluate their brand and reinvent themselves for fall. Suddenly stores that used to make me feel nauseous (boasting window displays stuffed with mom jeans and fugly tablecloth patterns), actually have some adorable stuff that us college girls would actually consider wearing. For the closets of fashionistas, this is great news. Now there are a dozen more stores that we can peruse online during class and drool over on our weekly treks to the mall. (Plus now when my mom calls and tells me she's going to Ann Taylor to pick up a suit jacket, I can ask her to pick me up a cute skirt to add to my care package!) Necessary Luxuries: Beauty Products Worth the Bank!

These days, more than ever, it's important to be smart with your hard-earned money. Frankly, it's rather unfashionable to go drop serious dough at Barney's and walk out with several thousand dollars of clothing that won't be in style next season. However, when it comes to beauty products, some investments are worth it. Of course, keeping your face, hair and nails well-coiffed never goes out of style. I've compiled some of my favorite pricier beauty products for your investment consideration. At the top of my list is Chanel's Precision Gommage Microperle Eclat, which is a finely beaded exfoliating gel that leaves your face smooth and smelling like roses. What's more, if you use just a dollop once or twice a week, the $45 tube can last you a year. As long as we're talking Chanel, have you tried their Nail Vernis colors? I know $23 seems like a lot for nail polish, but it goes on smooth and lasts a long time, with a nice shiny finish. One of my daily favorites is Philosophy's Hope in a Jar Moisturizer, which is an extremely lightweight, oil-free, hydrating moisturizer. Ranging from $15 for half an ounce to $60 for four ounces, it ain't cheap, but let's just say seeing is believing with that product. Check out my slideshow for other necessary beauty luxuries!

Kris Vs. Adam: Which American Idol Finalist Dresses Like A ...

After weeks of country-wide auditions (both impressive and depressing), loads of judge tension and quarreling, months of neck-to-neck competitive performances, a whole dictionary's worth of nonsensical new "Paula-isms," and style makeovers galore, it's crazy to think that it all comes down to just one night of singing their hearts out and a few billion text message votes. One of the finalists is about to have his life changed forever (as if that hasn't already happened to both of them already... or as if actually being crowed the "winner" really seals one's fate -- just ask Taylor Hicks). On one end, we have the guy-next-door acoustic Guitar Hero, Kris Allen, and on the other, a bad-ass Broadway-gone-rebel rocker Adam Lambert -- an unlikely duo who have just about as much in common as night and day. And aside from their vastly divergent musical tastes and sounds, their Glam Squad makeovers on the show's later rounds have them exhibiting their contrasting vibes not only in their musical stylings, but in their distinctly different fashion sense as well. Kris Allen's casual button-down shirts and blazers pair perfectly with his pared down acoustic accompaniments and raw yet soulful voice, while Adam Lambert's flashing lights and illuminating staircase entrances just wouldn't be complete without an equally dramatic rockstar look. We know this isn't "Fashion Idol," but hey -- how many times have you heard Simon snarl, "I absolutely loathe what you're wearing"? Face it -- posh performance ensembles are vital, whether or not it's really about the singing, so check out the slideshow for a week-by-week comparison of the last two standing, then vote below on whose performance outfits outdid his competitor's! American Idol's Glam Squad Gets Its Hands On Season 8's Top ...

So far, Season 8 of American Idol has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions and surprises. To name just a few, we've seen tension with the addition of new judge Kara DioGuardi, the surprise announcement of a top 13 instead of the traditional 12 (yay Anoop!), the premature elimination of pint-sized powerhouse Alexis Grace, the introduction of the judges' power to save one contestant from the looming doom of dismissal, and Paula Abdul's inability to complete a coherent sentence (okay, so that's no surprise). One thing that has remained consistent however, is Stylehive's favorite part of the show -- contestant makeovers! We saw former Idol favorites Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood go from drab to fab from their seasons' auditions to their final stages, and the show's Glam Squad, a team of stylists that help shop for looks for the show's performances and results shows, is once again having their way with this year's finalists (and boy did some of them need it)! From Anoop Desai's transformation from nerdy college kid to urban RnB star-in-the-making to Matt Giraud's reworked wardrobe to match his Justin Timberlake sound-alike voice, this season's Idol hopefuls are not only turning out to be the most lovable set of singers, but the most stylish too! Don't forget to watch the show on this week's special day and time tomorrow, Wednesday at 8, to see how the Top 10 fare in performance and poshness, and in the meantime check out the slideshow for more pictures of this season's Glam Squad makeovers! Update Your Makeup Routine With New Eyeliners And Eyeshadows!

    image

I was never an eyeshadow/eye liner girl, until I met that perfect palette. Until then, I wore basics - dark brown mascara, dark brown liner, and MAYBE a little glitter if it was a special occasion. Then, I happened upon the NARS 'best' Palette, and my life was forever changed. How simple it was to change my look for day and evening - I could hardly believe it! You know it's good when your friends roll their eyes and say, "Ugh, how do you get your shadow to look like that?!" One piece was all I needed to update my look - and at a reasonable price at that. Check out my SLIDESHOW for a few ways to update your eye makeup routine!
