If You Haven't Seen "The September Issue," Here's Why You Should

    image

Anna Wintour. Just her name can cause successful designers and big-shots in the fashion industry to tremble slightly in their butter-soft Italian leather boots. The well-known, cold, and demanding character of Miranda Priestly from "The Devil Wears Prada" was said to have been based not so loosely around Anna Wintour. Of course, when they announced "The September Issue" was coming out, all fashionable females and style-savvy men were more than a little excited- a real look into the conception and making of, arguably, the world's most famous fashion magazine, often unofficially referred to as the Bible of Fashion Magazines? At first, you'd almost almost expect the documentary to showcase Anna barking orders, tearing apart people's hard work and making life in general miserable to all those around her, just because she can. While there are instances where she leans towards behaving much like her fictional movie counterpart, you get to see a surprisingly softer side of Anna that includes genuine smiles and sincere praises. You get a glimpse into her personal life with input from her daughter and candid comments about her family, revealing they don't take her role in fashion quite as seriously as many of us do. You get to see that her ruthless, no-nonsense attitude comes more from a need to be efficient in a hectic, ever-changing, fast-paced world and that, despite the fact that she may eliminate many seemingly great ideas and projects born from blood, sweat and tears, there is no malicious intent behind it and that she does indeed have a great eye for what makes an issue 'perfect.' Most importantly, you realize that, although she is aware of her status in the fashion industry, she truly appreciates those around her that have raw talent and help make Vogue what it is today, like long-time colleague and friend, Grace Coddington, and that she believes in new talent, like her help with promoting Thakoon. So if you consider yourself a fashionably knowledgeable individual, I recommend that you hurry to see this movie and let it open your eyes!

Alex Gambardella on Sep 21, 2009 9:18 AM PDT
Kim Kardashian's playing a smart game! The reality show star and gossip circuit regular has signed up with OK! Magazine to talk all things beauty. After finally taking the plunge in the world of brunette-to-blond and back again (and applying what must be gobs of lipgloss and mascara before every event), Kim's definitely qualified. Why is this a smart move from Kim, and not just for the obvious extra notoriety and attention? Now she might be able to keep herself in-the-know about nasty rumors that come up about her, and she will be able to avoid any particularly egregious lies being spread by certain magazines. We love Kim's look, and if there's one thing she's got down pat, it's got to be makeup! We'll be reading her tips and critiquing on the regular, but we have no doubt that she's succeed. Head over to LimeLife for other more recent news in the world of beauty!Photo Credit: PR Photos

Pump Up The Stam With V Magazine's Eighties-Inspired Editorial

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Aug 31, 2009 12:24 PM PDT
Jessica Stam stars in an awesomely eighties-inspired spread in this month's V Magazine, on newsstands tomorrow. The editorial showcases Stam working out in some of fall's hottest looks, with an equally hot trainer, because everyone knows you should never stretch in a Balmain jumpsuit alone. You could pull a thread, or possibly a muscle. Other exercise ensembles include a Marc Jacobs sweater and boots, Adidas by Stella McCartney leggings layered with Chanel leg warmers, and a pair of seriously fierce Louis Vuitton over-the-knee boots that will scare off anyone who may be inclined to steal your spot on the elliptical machine. We're not sure whether we're more motivated to shop or sweat after a peek at the photoshoot, but we'll be getting in our cardio somehow, that's for sure. See the slideshow for a preview of the spread, and be sure to pick up this month's issue of V magazine tomorrow!

The Frisky Asks: How Much Do We Love This i-D Cover?

    image
The Frisky on Aug 27, 2009 3:27 PM PDT
A few months ago both Chanel Iman and Sessilee Lopez tweeted about a "major" moment in fashion and a surprise cover. That should have been clue enough for some folks to guess. Now the secret is out: the two young models, along with Jourdan Dunn and Arlenis Sosa, grace the cover of i.D magazine's September issue. The iconic photo features all four girls with corset-inspired tops, figure-hugging skirts, matching black gloves and shimmery makeup. It was shot in London by Emma Summerton and styled by i-D fashion director Edward Enninful. Besides featuring four of the hottest models of the moment in one sitting, this issue is distinctive for yet another reason: It is the only non-urban magazine to opt for women of color on its September cover. This past Wednesday night, New York's Museum of Modern Art was abuzz with some of the world's most chic elite as they mingled at the NYC premiere of The September Issue. The film, which hits theaters on Friday, documents the inner workings of Anna Wintour and her Vogue team as they slave over the release of the hugely-anticipated annual Fall issue of the fashion bible. To celebrate the movie's release, style icons of Hollywood and the design industry alike graced the red carpet, and although it's normally their clothing that fights for the attention of the cameras, the designers themselves embraced the limelight in person to honor the occasion. Among some of the fashion favorites in attendance were Carolina Herrera (hand-in-hand with Oscar de la Renta), the always-polished Vera Wang, and Zac Posen, who didn't hesitate to throw a few "top model" poses in the paparazzi direction. Vote below on which designer you think most stylishly held up the fort for the fashion industry! Photo Credit: PR Photos
