Hot In The Hive: KIKKERLAND Knock Off Lamp

    image
Anna Yu on Jun 5, 2009 6:25 AM PDT
I recently went bowling with a group of friends and had a funny feeling that I'd get the lowest score of the night. It didn't help that one friend had his very own custom bowling ball and another had a charming hop to his bowling technique. While I had a few spares, many of my attempts landed in the gutter. Not to worry! I still had a great time and actually scored better than I expected. So while I was scouring the web to look for a new table lamp today, I was surprised to find the KIKKERLAND Knock Off Lamp from Revolve. No it's not that kind of a knock off. It's because you won't find an on/off switch on this lamp. Instead, standing it upright will turn it on and knocking it on its side will turn it off. Guess this is one time when you don't want to be knocking pins down unless you want a pitch black room!

    Price: $32

Hot In The Hive: Peter Waltz's Dollhouse Light Fixtures

    image
Alex Gambardella on Apr 14, 2009 6:23 AM PDT
Known for his skillful reworking of recycled materials such as old vacuum cleaners and used speakers, innovative artist Peter Waltz's latest gig is his crafty conversion of vintage dollhouses into modern light fixtures to brighten up your own life-size abode. These tiny "homes" come in a variety of floor plans and styles, varying not only in their architecture but in the way Waltz chooses to remodel them as well. Whether he opts to restore its original paint or force it to rust to create that distinctly antique look, each dollhouse is subtly unique from the others, not to mention wholly original from any type of light fixture you'd find at Ikea! They can be attached to a wall or even placed atop an end table -- either way these vintage dollhouses combine the youthful nostalgic charm of a girl's favorite former plaything and the edginess of modern home decor. Check out the whole collection on his online portfolio and order one yourself through the site's contact sheet.

    Price: $300-700

The best part about hosting a party is getting all your friends together for some good food, drinks, and laughs. When everyone leaves for the evening, the last thing you want to do is cleanup! No worries, carry those good feelings to bed and leave everything tomorrow. What about all the candles flickering as the night's mood lighting? It's all fake! You don't have to worry about cleaning up wax drippings or your curtains catching fire with these flameless lights. And they're not the cheesy kind either! So while you may burn the turkey this Thanksgiving, nothing else will go up in flames. Take a look at my slideshow for all the flameless and portable lighting options the Hive has to offer!

With the days now shorter and the nights colder, consider bringing warmth and flattering light into your home with candles. They're an excellent way to add an upscale and sumptuous atmosphere to your home without spending very much money. And since they come in so many unique styles, shapes, scents, and sizes, there's a candle perfect for every setting and occasion. Best yet, I found a myriad of creative and totally unexpected candles and candle accessories in the Hive. So put those boring candlesticks away and set your house aglow with something much hotter, like these mahogany-scented tree trunk pillar candles. Structural stacked rocks are an organic and artistic way to display your favorite candles, and whimsical cupcake tea lights would make for a sweet gift idea. For more ideas on ways to set your house aglow this season, search the Hive and click on my slideshow to see my five favorite creative candle finds!

Aviaries- They're Not Just For The Birds!

Hanging aviaries in your home makes a spectacular statement and provides a unique way to store and display coveted items. Hang a collection of vintage bird cages at differing heights in your living room, display a single dramatic one on a table or shelf, or use cages to showcase potted plants in garden settings-- the possibilities are infinite because there are so many options when it comes to aviaries. Not only are there a plethora of bird cages available online and in antique shops and pet stores, but they are also easy to customize with spray paint and distressors. I'd fill aviaries in my home with everything from orchids to seashells to faux fruit to tea lights and dramatic candles alike. So let your creative juices flow and invest in an aviary this fall! There are quite a few available in the Hive from a pair of Far East pagoda-inspired pieces to a spectacular golden Victorian-era conservatory bird cage. Check out my SLIDESHOW to see my five favorite decorative aviaries.
