Back To The Classics: Our Top Five Designer Handbags

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jun 18, 2009 10:22 AM PDT
It seems that after many seasons of excess and "it" bags, the fashion industry has come back to reality. It might be the sobering effects of the economic downturn that's making us look towards the classics. Then again, most of us could never actually afford a new designer bag each season to begin with. So instead of using your tax return on a few trendy items that will make you wonder why the heck you bought them come the next season, put your money into something that will last. Classic handbags never go out of season and look good with nearly every outfit. Yes, they may cost quite a lot of money, but these top designer bags are impeccably made and will last you nearly a lifetime. Don't believe me? I have an old Chanel purse from my grandmother to prove it. The Chanel 2.55 bag is the traditional flap bag. It was first introduced in February 1955 by the ever-practical Coco Chanel, who wanted a hands-free bag with a shoulder strap. The 2.55 comes in one size only, but it's the perfect size, small enough for evening, yet big enough to also use during the day. With its classic shape and iconic status, the Hermes Birkin bag is the holy grail of handbags. The wait list may have died down since its feature on "Sex and the City", but if you don't want to wait or pay full price, eBay and Portero.com are great places to look for them second-hand. No one can argue that the Louis Vuitton Speedy is a classic-- it has been Louis Vuitton's best selling bag since Audrey Hepburn made it popular. Get it in the black or colored Epi leather to avoid getting sick of the logo. Some newer additions to the classic bag line up are the Yves Saint Laurent Muse bag and the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato bags. The Muse was introduced in 2006 and has been a bestseller ever since. The Intrecciato bag from Bottega, otherwise known as the woven bag, is buttery soft, beautifully made, and has become an instant classic, with has a slightly lower price tag than some of the other investment bags. Father's Day Presents For The Pampered Papa!

Father's Day is pretty much here and if you haven't gotten your dad a gift yet, you better get on it quick! Men in general are notoriously hard to shop for, and fathers are the hardest of the bunch to find a great gift to give. In an effort to solve this dilemma for ourselves, we've researched and written about numerous gift ideas and suggestions. Here is one more attempt to help find you that perfect Father's Day gift that is not a tie and that dad will love! If your father already seems to have everything, then get him something useful but completely superfluous! He probably has a couple of drugstore razors in his medicine cabinet. Why not get him a beautiful silver or wood finish shave set? I'm sure he already has a wallet, or maybe a money-clip, but perhaps a new soft Italian leather wallet will look even nicer! Women feel entitled to numerous pampering procedures, but men deserve the prince(ss) treatment from time to time too! Maybe a spa and massage session will help lift the stress off his shoulders... or perhaps he's a fashionable father and a great piece of statement jewelry is all he needs to add a little pep in his step! And what makes these luxe gifts even better is that they're from you, so check out the slideshow for some more great gift ideas to spoil your dad!

Buckle Up For ASTARS By Alpinestars Women's Line

Ready to write a page in your own motorcycle dairy? Turn to ASTARS, a new line by Italian motorcycle company Alpinestars. They have been outfitting motorist and car enthusiasts for over 45 years and started a men€™s contemporary line 4 years ago. The new ASTARS brand for women draws inspiration from Alpinestars€™ rich motorsports history without going overboard. No need to be a grease monkey in the garage or rip around the track on a Ducati for these duds. The clothes are made for watching the race, not winning it. The line includes plenty of slouchy tanks and vintage motorcycle tees as well as a few vegan-friendly motorcycle jackets that look just like the real thing James Dean wore back in the day. It provides just the right touch of motorcycle toughness for your everyday look. Take a gander at my slideshow for some of my favorite pieces, then buy some for yourself at alpinestars.com.

Which Singing Star Rocked The Badass Biker Look?

When it comes to leather, there's a fine line between who can really pull it off and who should literally pull it off and donate the duds to the nearest Goodwill. Especially now that summer is nipping at our heels, I've been surprised to see so many stars still donning the leather look while roaming the red carpet -- some even decked out in the fabric head-to-toe even throughout the sunniest days of late May. From aspiring rock-chick Taylor Momsen to cutesie R&B crooner Jesse McCartney, it's tough to say whether some of these artists are really digging their leather loot or are just trying too hard to convince us that they have a rebel side. Is it officially time to hang up the motorcycle jackets and liquid leggings and embrace some more breathable material, or is there a whole slew of dominatrix-inspired trends just around the corner? Vote below on who you think looks good enough in their leather to be allowed to wear it for a little longer...

Ida Hsiang on May 27, 2009 5:16 AM PDT
I'm kinda, sorta really addicted to shoes. I base my outfits around what shoes I want to wear that day. I'll skip lunch for a week to justify those awesome pumps that I have recently added to my collection. Discovering Marais USA can be likened to finding a new type of the same drug, upping the shoe addiction ante. It's a sickness and I love it! Marais USA is based out of New York and designed and run by 2 ambitious young women in their early 20's. Marais USA sells anything from flats to sandals to wedges. When the designers couldn't find a variety of cute, versatile and chic daytime shoes, they made some themselves! The flats are elegant, the sandals are feminine and the heels are cute and practical. These simple and classic designs come in a whole spectrum of colors from basic black to eye-popping red and many in between. To top it all off, Marais USA is practical on the wallet too! All the shoes are made of either suede or patent leather, making them comfortable and luxurious and they start out at only $52 and all under $80! So for stylish, versatile shoes that boast comfort and long wear, check out Marais USA online and find your favorite style and color today!

    Price: $52 - $72
