New York Fashion Week Runway: Face Masks And Pompom Hats At ...

    image

Season after season, Steven Cox and Daniel Silver of menswear label Duckie Brown give a jolt of sartorial humor on the runway, and their Fall 2009 collection doesn't hold back on the eccentricity. Models were cloaked in black from head to toe to give us a hybrid of Marvin the Martian and stealth ninjas. Finely cut blazers were matched with baggy pants while pops of orange gloves and heavily bundled necks gave the appropriate amount of whimsy. The boxy looks had the male models looking like covert snowboarding hipsters on some sort of top secret mission. Even though the looks that came down the runway had a dapper swagger, the ski-masks and exaggerated pompom hats had an air of mystery that were both curious and creepy. I wouldn't want to run into someone in an outfit like this in a dark alley. Amidst the numerous bulky layers, the sporty coats and dandy jackets were clearly the star of the show, giving us a range of trenches and sporty coats that were simple, yet had the trademark style of Duckie Brown.

Meet billi, a Stylediarist from the Netherlands who loves to bake cakes, wear Wayfarers, and has mastered the complex art of layering fashions. Regardless of the season, you can always find billi effortlessly sporting her favorite styles together in cohesive looks. Amazingly, her outfits are never cluttered or disheveled in appearance a la Mary-Kate Olsen. Billi's layers always appear effortless and chic. Simple basics like grey or blue skinny jeans and jet-black tights form the basis of many of her looks. She then dresses up these staples with more statement-worthy fashions like embroidered tunic tops, wide belts, and colorful patterned scarves. For a lesson in layering, just in time for fall, head on over to billi's StyleDiary, and be sure to check out my SLIDESHOW to see ten awesome looks straight from her page.

New York Fashion Week Studio: Elise Overland Brings Glamour ...

    image

Fall/winter, spring/summer...where's the monsoon collection? Elise Overland's S/S 2009 presentation at a dark 19th Street space was all the proof I needed that even though my BCBG dress and the rain weren't an ideal match, leather and sequins definitely were. Old Hollywood glamour met nineties' grunge as silk head scarves and sequined shawls peeked out from cropped motorcycle jackets, and exposed zippers met their match upon pleated silk mini dresses. Models donned rose-colored John Lennon frames and their chunky peep-toes were the perfect contrast for the light layers. The overall look was decadent yet effortless, and can be easily reinterpreted for fall, which is good because I don't think I can wait until spring to try out these trends! Check out the slideshow to see the looks.

New York Fashion Week Street Style: Fashionistas Laugh at ...

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Sep 6, 2008 2:28 PM PDT
You've got to hand it to New Yorkers for pulling out all the stops outfit-wise when (a) the humidity is waging war on hair and makeup everywhere and (b) the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna are fast approaching. Forget throw-on-and-go dresses - we're talking layers upon layers, graphic tees tucked into skirts, socks with heels, neon shades, and a particularly insane pair of Chloe shoe boots. OK enough talk. See it all in my slideshow of looks from THIS MORNING, and keep checking back for more style from the tents at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week!

Style Poll: Pretty and Poofy, Or a Little Goofy?

    image

Big textured dresses can be a bit intense, especially when worn alone, so is it smart to cinch at the waist with an eye-catching belt? Celebrities like Dania Ramirez and Michelle Monaghan have stepped onto the red carpet wearing poofy frocks cinched at the waist, a good strategy to keep from looking lost inside the layers of the dress, but I'm kind of torn about this style. On the one hand, I really love the contrast in color, having a solid color dress with a noticeable large belt. On the other, I really don't love how the belt makes the dress spill over from both sides, making it look like these ladies are wearing dessert, rather than expensive frocks!

Dressing For Your Body: Layering For Petites

    image

Tis the season to get your layer on. Winter is now giving way to spring which usually leads to erratic weather where one minute a tank top and shorts seems appropriate and the next you€™re reaching for a big chunky sweater. The layered look has been popular for quite some time thanks to stars like Mary-Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie who seems to combat the €˜closet full of clothes and too much to wear€™ issue by wearing everything they€™ve got! Most of the time these ladies manage to make the whole just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-threw-a-bunch-of-stuff-on look work, but sometimes, they look like they€™re drowning in a big sea of fabric. Read on to find out how to do it right.
