Make A Bold Statement With Colorblock Home Decor

    image
Ida Hsiang on Oct 28, 2009 8:20 AM PDT
The colorblock craze is one that I like very much. There is nothing more sophisticated than that classic combo of black and white. Bright, solid hues matched with black or each other make for an eye-catching and fashionable ensemble. It's such an easy and appealing way to add interest and color, it's a wonder that it hasn't caught on in home decor as well. Be a trend-setter and apply this tried and true style statement to your home. You can choose a few of your favorite colors and use them in a number of accents. Throw pillows and rugs are an easy way to go and make boring rooms more colorful and energetic. Items like placemats and shower curtains are also fun and easy ways to spruce up your living space and give your home a harmonious theme without having to spend too much! Click on the slideshow for some great colorblock ideas that you can bring into your home!

Hot In The Hive: Bodum Bistro Toaster

I don't know if they're just too busy browning our bagels to perfection to be concerned with looks, but it seems exceedingly rare to find aesthetically pleasing toasters. It's even more unlikely that I'd spot a toaster I felt I just had to have based on cuteness alone! Until now, toasters seem to have been strictly business -- pop in your toast, grab it when it pops back out, get on with your day -- but the Bodum Bistro 2-slice Toaster isn't only functional... it's pretty darn spiffy too! With eight fun colors to choose from and a modern heat-resistant rubber exterior, it doesn't just look pretty, either! The adjustable-width slots can fit all sorts of slices (no more cramming or jamming your huge slabs of bread) and the pull-out crumb tray makes for easy clean-up. I think I already have about 4 free toasters from various other appliance purchases, but this one is just so cute, it might be worth the splurge!

    Price: $79.95

Hot In The Hive: Matryoshka Measuring Cups

If you happen to have a Ukrainian grandmother like I do, you may be able to relate to my childhood experience of having to kill seemingly endless durations of time at her house playing with her collection of silly Russian nesting dolls while she "babysat" me. Yeah, I was five, but I wasn't easily amused enough to think that taking the little people apart and fitting them back inside of each other sufficed as a good time at Grandma's. Although I was bored nearly to tears at the time, now that I'm technically an adult, I can't help but be drawn to these cute Russian doll measuring cups, called M-Cups after their actual name, Matryoshka dolls. While the dolls themselves may be a completely functionless ode to the old country, when brought to the realm of cooking, they're actually a brilliant idea in kitchenware organization and space-saving! Plus, with all my childhood practice, I could probably break a record with how quickly I'm able to stack them up and put them away after completing a well-measured recipe!

    Price: $11.99

Hot In The Hive: Thermos-Minis by Crea Crea And Crescioni Vanina!

You almost wouldn't expect something so whimsically designed and sweetly packaged from the seriously sophisticated and cynically chic French! Just to prove that they are always unpredictable and one-step ahead, French designers Crea Crea and Crescioni Vanina are introducing Thermos-minis! These cute little drink containers are the baby-siblings of the huge, heavy, stainless steel versions that my dad lugs around in order to save money on coffee. They are obviously smaller, but still hold enough that you won't be left wanting more caffeine after drinking the last drops. These Thermos-minis hold about 8 oz of whatever drink you want... hot, cold, or spiked (just kidding). Besides keeping a good temperature on your drinks (because if it didn't, it wouldn't be a Thermos), these Thermos-minis also come in an array of fun and colorful designs and patterns. Personalize your morning pick-me-up by choosing anything from Asian-inspired floral patterns to multi-colored dots and shapes! There's even ones that resemble a tiny man or an umbrella toting frog! All the designs are different, but all are whimsical, care-free and full of bright color. Their size allows you to pop them into a purse or tote, or to throw into the backseat of a car. No more cookie-cutter, silver steel thermoses that need their own carrier just to transport them around!

    Price: $38.00

Despite the fact that my father is a chef, my mother is a natural talent in the baking arena, and I come from a long line of major foodies, I have to admit that the kitchen-savvy gene definitely skipped a generation in my case. Don't get me wrong -- I certainly can read, I can follow simple instructions, and I can whip up a mean bowl of Easy Mac, but when it comes to making a full meal or even just baking cookies from scratch, I need a little help! That's why I think this Cookbook Box Set from Fred Flare is the cutest thing ever -- six colorful cookbooks with photo-accompanied recipes for all kinds of concoctions (Indian, Pasta, Fruit, Wok, Veg, & Treats, to be exact!) that all come in an oven-shaped box, great for gift-giving or even for displaying next to your neglected life-size oven! It's the perfect little packaged gift for the friend or relative (or just for yourself!) who loves the idea of cooking but just needs a little inspiration and instruction! Plus, the whole set is way cheaper than just one cookbook from one of those bigwigs on the Food Network! Stand back Giada De Laurentiis!
