Everyone Needs a Pair of Glow-in-the-Dark Pants

    image

I own a lot of jeans. A lot. I have my comfy jeans for class, I have my sexy jeans for going out, I have my fat jeans for the end of the school year when nothing else fits, and I have my weekend jeans with the giant holes in the knees/between my legs where my thighs rub together. What I don't have is a pair that glows in the dark. I know! What's wrong with me? How have I survived college this long without Diesel's latest design that glows bright white under the dim lighting so common in sweaty frat basements? It's amazing I€™m even here to tell the tale. OK, so at first glance glow-in-the-dark pants might seem appropriate for raves and raves only, but upon further inspection these things could really be a great investment. Just think about all the times a pair of glowing legs might come in handy...

A quick once-over of my closet and you'll be able to sum it up in three words: skinny jeans galore! And after awhile, despite all the different washes and dyes and distressing, they all start to look the same. Leave it to Jessica Alba to give me some inspiration for updating my denim collection! Constantly seen out and about LA with daughter Honor in tow, Jessica Alba's nearly always in jeans for ultimate comfort and mobility, and despite juggling her little one and a demanding career, she always makes time to look stylish on the go. Lately she's been rocking Black Orchid's Black Betty skinny jeans -- dark classic skinnies updated with hook and eye closures at the ankles for a little dash of edginess. The dark wash makes them appropriate for both dressing up and looking casual-chic -- making them the perfect addition to my collection! You can buy this pair along with some of their other celebrity-approved styles at Black Label Boutique.

Style Flashback: Rayanne From "My So-Called Life"

    image

Admit it, you secretly loved Rayanne Graff's quirky, nouveau-hippie threads on "My So-Called Life." She was the fun, free-spirited Laverne to misery chick Angela Chase's Shirley, and her offbeat layers (plaid shirts over tank tops) and wild, streaked hair are the epitome of grunge-era style. But how do you make Rayanne's look modern and chic? To the rescue comes our style expert Brian with some tips on updating Rayanne's quirky look. Brian says: It's true, from distressed jeans to slouchy, oversize blazers, designers are partying like it's 1994. The key to pulling of the look in 2009 is picking pieces that are vaguely reminiscent of the era without being too costume-y. You'll also want to mix them in with items that feel "now" to keep the look current. This paisley blouse by Candie's has modern feminine touches (ruffles, a smocked hem) that totally update the retro print. Plus, the rich brown color feels current. Today's version of Rayanne's tight acid-wash denim is a pair of dark rinse skinny jeans. I love this pair by McQ. Completely unadorned, they'll mix perfectly with anything in your closet. Keep your Docs for posterity's sake, but slip into a pair of slouchy ankle boots like these by Deena & Ozzy. Studded detailing on the harness strap give them a rock and roll feel. The '90s were all about mixing the formal with the casual (prom dresses with sneakers, anyone?), so top off this look with a pair of elegant drop earrings like these by Pade Vavra. Donald Fisher, Founder Of Gap Inc, Dies

    image

Don Fisher, the retail legend who along with his wife Doris, founded a single blue jeans store on San Francisco's Ocean Avenue and eventually, an entire clothing empire, passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 81. His achievements transcended the retail category: as the store, which stocked Levis, records, and tapes grew into a now $15 billion global business, Fisher maintained a focus on thoughtful expansion and integrity, a sign that his philanthropic goals were just as important to him as his entrepreneurial ones. The road to The Gap was full of ups and downs, but success came in 1969 when he realized the need for an entire store devoted to pants, which was then the fastest growing classification-- soon after, the business plan was laid down and the first store opened, and the public loved what they saw. A lack of retail experience did not hinder Fisher in the least-- it only left room for more innovation. The Gap label was launched a few years later-- never before had a brand name used its store name. Philanthropy played a large role in his ventures. He founded Gap Foundation to help people in underserved communities worldwide grab hold of their futures, and was the force behind two of the most well-known and successful education reform organizations, Teach For America and the Knowledge Is Power program. As avid collectors of art, the Fishers contributed a great deal to SFMOMA, including their own collection. His achievements and contributions to San Francisco and the global community are truly infinite, and he will never be forgotten!
