Recession Chic: Stylish And Classic Trench Coats At Every Price

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I love my basics. From simple and well-cut t-shirts to ballet flats in every color, I own them all. In today's economy, this is actually one of the best times to buy high quality basics because retailers are more likely to sell clothes people would actually buy and wear. Which leads me to a almost year round staple-- the trench coat. From modern day celebs like Katie Holmes and Hayden Panettiere to icons such as Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn (remember her trench at the end of Breakfast at Tiffany's?), the trench coat is everywhere and a must have in any modern woman's closet. Trench coats are available in a multitude of lengths and colors, but I decided to feature the ever classic khaki. Take a look at the double-breasted trench by Burberry, the originators in trench coats. Can't afford the nearly $1000 price tag? I've found 5 stylin' trench coats under $100 perfect for the spring. Curious? Click the slideshow to see them all!

    Influential International Style: Carla Bruni

I'll openly admit that I have a girl-crush on Carla Bruni. The beautiful model/singer/First Lady of France is a bona fide style icon of our time. Although you might not be able to recreate the sound of her luscious voice (I dare you to listen to "L'amour" from her Quelqu€™un M€™a Dit album, and not be totally envious), you can recreate some of her style secrets. Whether it's a classic black dress and tasteful diamond necklace, a chic working girl grey suit with a bright coat, or a belted overcoat for an outdoor public appearance, Bruni always looks stunning, appropriate and stylish. Think classic, flattering shapes, mixing neutrals with brights, and accessories that enhance an outfit as a whole, without making a statement of their own. Basically, think like your inner First Lady! Check out my SLIDESHOW for a few pieces to Carla Bruni-ze your wardrobe.

With the arrival of the Obamas in the White House, all eyes are on Washington, and it's not just our new president who's capturing our attention. Michelle Obama is demonstrating a true flair for fashion, and her individual style is garnering more than a few fans. With simple lines and beautiful tailoring, she brings to mind another first lady and fashion icon. Already we can identify some aspects of her signature style: her penchant for flats, Erickson Beamon floral brooches, belted dresses, and complexion-flattering jewel tones and pastels. For anyone who was left in doubt of her stylistic prowess, her Michelle Obama's inaugural gown cemented her place among the other formidable fashion mavens who have graced the White House. Check out the slideshow to see some pieces that exemplify the new Mrs. O's wardrobe.

    It's a Mad Men World!

Does Joan Holloway make you covet a time machine to retrieve her body-hugging style? Never fear, for this season's designers have embraced the curve-loving silhouettes of the 60s. AMC got it right in the costume department - Mad Men's ladies have the look down cold. Channel your inner Jackie O by pairing a gorgeous strand of pearls with a belted dress, like this gorgeous green Escada. For a more casual look, make like the equestrian Betty Draper and try a swing riding jacket with skinny jeans and boots. Work week chic? No problem -- try a wool cap sleeve dress like this Bottega Veneta and you're sure to turn heads! Check out the slideshow to start your journey to the fabulous silhouettes of the past! And if you still can't get enough, add some Mad Men style to your apartment too!
