Talitha Getty's Style Lives On Through Boho-Inspired Pieces

The adage "live fast, die young" applies to few people quite as well as it does Talitha Getty. A victim of her own excessive lifestyle, the Dutch-descended Getty died in 1971 at age 30 of a drug overdose, yet left behind a style legacy that's become a cultural touchstone: designers as disparate as Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Christian Dior are among the many who've cited Getty's signature Marrakesh-meets-mod fashions as inspiration for various collections. Gamine, almond-eyed, and possessed of a confident style that drew on the twin influences of the Moroccan souks she frequented and the London-based Swinging '60s crowd she ran with, Getty was immortalized in Patrick Lichfield's iconic photograph of her and husband John Paul Getty, Jr., on the rooftop of their infamous home in Morocco dubbed "The Pleasure Palace." The image captured not just the beautifully tragic air that surrounded the Gettys, but also Talitha's groundbreaking boho-chic aesthetic. Flowing caftans, mounds of costume jewelry, fur-trimmed mod dresses, filmy silk scarves, and gauzy harem pants were some of the hallmarks of her repertoire but, more than that, it was her laissez-faire, creative approach to blending style genres that prompted designers like Yves Saint Laurent to declare, "When I knew Talitha Getty my vision completely changed." Getty's seemingly direct fashion descendants include Jade Jagger, Nicole Richie, and Kelly Killoren Bensimon, the latter having proclaimed her admiration of Getty openly. Talitha Getty's casual-elegant style is perfect for the coming summer months, and I've put together a slideshow to show you how to achieve it-- check it out.

    Influential International Style: Emma Watson

Knowing full-well that she could take advantage of an Invisibility Cloak at any given moment, Emma Watson's status as a rising international style icon is even more impressive. The Harry Potter star is all grown up, and as the new face of the House of Chanel, is rumored to also be replacing Keira Knightley as the face of Burberry. How does a wizard rise to a style queen seemingly overnight? By choosing classic shapes, flattering neutrals, and always looking age appropriate. Whether it's a risk of length or a gorgeous backless gown, there is always a little something extra to Emma Watson's red carpet looks. Also catapulting her into success? Refusing to follow makeup trends and instead choosing flattering shimmers, and backing it all up with a classic updo or soft waves for a hairstyle. Influential International Style: Daphne Guinness

Daphne Guinness, heiress to the Guinness family fortune, sure seems to know what she's doing. Quite simply, she's a haute couturier's dream. She's open to all sorts of eclectic, wacky, detailed styling - and has the collection to prove it. Although she seems to prefer a simple color palette of blacks, whites and creams, they never appear the same way. Whether it's a kerchief neckline, Jetson-esque cap sleeves or leopard print detailing, Guinness can pull it off in spades. As one of the world's most prolific collectors of haute couture (what wouldn't you give to also hold that title?), she's a risk-taker, and often a winner of the fashion set. Rather than sticking to any rules, she simply has fun. Think Alexander McQueen meets Karl Lagerfeld meets Vivienne Westwood. Check out my slideshow for a sampling of Daphne Guinness' style! Influential International Style: Ivanka Trump

When it comes to fashion, Paris Hilton proves to us that billionaire heiresses do not necessarily hold the keys to style. However, Ivanka Trump is a big exception. Besides creating a name for herself as a VP of her father's real estate corporation and also starting her own jewelry line with a flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York, Trump manages to dress with sophistication and class. The Wharton School-educated Trump knows the value of a good little black dress, and its potential to carry from business meetings to the red carpet. Don't peg her into a corner though, because just when you think she might be a little boring, she'll wear something fabulously avant garde. Ivanka Trump knows the value of classic hair and make-up, and also a great pair of colored shoes to pump up an outfit. At any rate, she looks fabulous, and is consistent with good decision-making for red carpets around the world! Check out my slideshow for ideas of how to emulate Trump's style in your life! Influential International Style: Carla Bruni

I'll openly admit that I have a girl-crush on Carla Bruni. The beautiful model/singer/First Lady of France is a bona fide style icon of our time. Although you might not be able to recreate the sound of her luscious voice (I dare you to listen to "L'amour" from her Quelqu€™un M€™a Dit album, and not be totally envious), you can recreate some of her style secrets. Whether it's a classic black dress and tasteful diamond necklace, a chic working girl grey suit with a bright coat, or a belted overcoat for an outdoor public appearance, Bruni always looks stunning, appropriate and stylish. Think classic, flattering shapes, mixing neutrals with brights, and accessories that enhance an outfit as a whole, without making a statement of their own. Basically, think like your inner First Lady! Check out my SLIDESHOW for a few pieces to Carla Bruni-ze your wardrobe.

Paris Style: Lou Doillon Blends Luxury With Studious Dishevelment

    image

On a trip to Paris this spring, I became obsessed with Lou Doillon, daughter of Jane Birkin. Her influence is everywhere: bohemian with a slightly tough, rock-n-roll edge, but also a touch of luxury. It is all so impossibly chic the way these women zip around Paris on their motorbikes, clad in leather jackets or leather pants and layers of scarves and jewelry. The key to this look is the right balance: keeping delicate or frilly things toned down with something a little edgy (a flowy, silky dress with a motorcycle jacket) and vice versa (a strand of pearls or rhinestones with a flannel shirt and trousers). Mlle Doillon is also the master at making menswear incredibly feminine and sexy. And last but not least ... don't dare brush your hair! Click SEE SLIDESHOW for more examples!
