Get Crafty For Father's Day And Make a Gadget Case

    image

Below, she shares a fun how-to on taking an old tie and making it into a gadget case! Father's Day is coming up right around the corner and who need another cheesy Father's Day gift? Nevertheless another tie? Why not make your hubby a father's day gift this year he can use. Let's admit it; most men nowadays have a cell phone, camera, iPod that they are using. They may also have a lot of ties kicking around. So instead of buying yet another tie for father's day this year, why not refashion one he doesn't wear anymore? What's great is this project involves only a little bit of sewing, some fun seam ripping (the kids love this) and dad can use it as a functioning gift. You're helping the environment by reusing and refashioning an article of clothing in your home and also being easy on your wallet. Create An Art Nouveau-Inspired Shrink-Art Pendant!

Below, she shares a fun how-to on creating your very own Art Nouveau inspired pendant! Pick up some sheets of shrink plastic at your local craft store or online and use it to create a vintage-inspired pendant piece! I traced a romantic, swirly pattern onto white plastic and used it as the basis for a red-and-black pendant on a beaded chain. The sky is the limit with shrink art, so you can freehand or use specific designs for inspiration. Adding sparkly faceted beads along both sides of the adjustable chain, and as a decorative dangle at the clasped end, is a fun way to embellish the overall design. Susan Beal is a contributor at Craftstylish, a site dedicated to do-it-yourself crafts and fashionable art projects! Below, she shares a fun how-to on decorating your own jewelry set! This fun, sparkly set of painted and embellished pendant and earrings was inspired by my super-talented friend Kathy Cano-Murillo, the Crafty Chica herself! I started with plain wood discs from the craft store and added elements from her new line of crafty delights, but you can fancy yours up with any visual imagery and details you like. You'll need: Three wooden discs (I used one 1.5-inch circle and two 1-inch circles), acrylic paint, a paintbrush, jewelry adhesive, pendant bail, jump rings or soldered rings, three paper images of your choice, the same size or smaller than your discs, sharp scissors, craft glue, clear gloss varnish, three charms of your choice, rhinestones or other flat-backed embellishments, pliers, earring wires, a chain with a clasp. Hot In The Hive: Get Cooking! Cookbook Box Set

Despite the fact that my father is a chef, my mother is a natural talent in the baking arena, and I come from a long line of major foodies, I have to admit that the kitchen-savvy gene definitely skipped a generation in my case. Don't get me wrong -- I certainly can read, I can follow simple instructions, and I can whip up a mean bowl of Easy Mac, but when it comes to making a full meal or even just baking cookies from scratch, I need a little help! That's why I think this Cookbook Box Set from Fred Flare is the cutest thing ever -- six colorful cookbooks with photo-accompanied recipes for all kinds of concoctions (Indian, Pasta, Fruit, Wok, Veg, & Treats, to be exact!) that all come in an oven-shaped box, great for gift-giving or even for displaying next to your neglected life-size oven! It's the perfect little packaged gift for the friend or relative (or just for yourself!) who loves the idea of cooking but just needs a little inspiration and instruction! Plus, the whole set is way cheaper than just one cookbook from one of those bigwigs on the Food Network! Stand back Giada De Laurentiis!

    Price: $30

We're Head Over Heels For These Handmade Headpieces!

Feathers, flowers, and over-sized bows- oh my! These adorable headpieces are literally popping up everywhere from the Spring '09 collections of Luella and Diane von Furstenberg even to my Friday night out. I'm going to shy away from terms like "headgear," as I've heard the word used to describe these accessories, but frankly I find it a bit off-putting and rather inaccurate and it kind of reminds me of those awkward childhood sleepovers when at bedtime a new friend put on this elaborate mechanical device to my shock and utter horror. But back to the matter at hand, these adorable headpieces that stole our hearts as children are once again finding their way atop our heads. Using the all-things-handmade online marketplace Etsy, young and innovative designers are making quite a splash (and some cash) with these charming creations and the creative competition has skyrocketed, yielding a plethora of designs to choose from. From delicate feather arrangements to floral garnishes all the way to whimsical scenes, these headpieces make it possible to adorn your head with pretty much whatever you please! Some of my favorite headpiece designers available on Etsy are portobello, charmschooldesign, and twelvetwentyeight. These crafty ladies have me reminiscing about my childhood (and no, not in the bedtime-braces kind of way) and they definitely have me clicking on PayPal. Take a gander at some of my favorite headpieces in my slideshow and also be sure to stop by their Etsy shops to see more!
