One Man's Recyclables Are Another Man's... Furniture?

    image

How is it that a living space can get so cluttered? Some people are lucky and are born with the "organized and tidy" gene. I got the "cluttered pack-rat" gene instead. With every new beginning, I promise myself that I will only keep what is absolutely necessary and all that is not under that category will be swiftly thrown, recycled or donated. Instead, there are piles of fashion and gossip magazines dotting my floor, suitcases holding clothes because my closet and dressers are full and shelves of random knick-knacks, accessories and souvenirs that I swear are sentimental, but probably wouldn't notice if they were gone. Some fellow pack-rats have found a creative and environmental way to rid our already small living spaces of junk and clutter and produce objects that are beautiful, funky and totally useful! From trash-cans and large vases made from old magazines (i could make a patio set) to bright, extravagant chandeliers made from "stuff" and a place to rest your feet made up of shoes that used to be on them, innovative designers are helping lighten the land-fill load and make our homes more fun and functional! Because the items are made of recyclables, subtle details will be different, ensuring that you truly have a one-of-a-kind piece. Sounds like something you've been looking for to help set the theme of a new house, or to spruce up a room? Check out the slideshow to see some favorite recycled furniture ideas and find one for your space!

A gift certificate is a puzzling thing, especially when it's handed to you. Do you use it on something cheaper so you save money, or do you apply it to a larger purchase? Do you hang on to it until you find the perfect thing because it's "free" spending money, or do you spend it right away? So many questions! Last week, we introduced you to Creative Contrast, an online fashion retailer with a serious selection of accessories from Sir Alistair Rai, Tolani, Alexis Bittar, Kenneth Jay Lane, and many more. All you had to do to win a $100 gift certificate was tell us which item sold on the site was your favorite! Read on to find out if you won!

Hot In The Hive: iPhone App Coasters

Those of the slightly younger set may not know this, but before the iPod and Mac laptops, Apple was on the brink of being obsolete. They were associated with the huge, loud computers in the school library that you could only do research on or else the librarian would throw her glasses at you. The iPod is maybe the greatest comeback product in history. It not only brought Apple back from the brink, but ricocheted them to number one in technological gadgets. Now you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't have at least one Apple product laying around the house. I've had an a few of the iPod variation, but I'm actually lusting over the iPhone. Well, those at Apple must have felt bad for people like me who would love to jump on the iPhone band-wagon but, for whatever reason, have not. There are now iPhone app coasters that I can also put on my table, and for the fraction of the price! These coasters come in a set of 16 "apps" and are made of MDF plywood wrapped in a vinyl and varnish. A rubber back keeps it from moving around and they're washable and reusable! Ok, so they don't actually allow you to pull up the weather in Tunisia or give you a recipe for "Easy Chicken Bake" with just a click of a button, but they are awesome and fun! At $60 for the entire set, these make a great gift for the i-Aficionado or for those like me who just want to rub elbows with this elite i-Group!

Price: $60.00 for set of 16

I'll be the first to admit that my wardrobe (sadly) does not exactly reflect the amount of time I spend on high-end and contemporary shopping sites. Sure, there's the occasional splurge, and I can thank careful/obsessive eBay browsing for my Marc by Marc collection, and okay, there was sort of a time where you could say I lived at Loehmann's (the security guy totally recognizes me now), but day to day, I'm pretty casual. But when simply casual doesn't cut it, there's Creative Contrast. Their e-store contains a stunning collection of clothes, accessories, jewelry, and home decor by Sir Alistair Rai, Tolani, Alexis Bittar, Kenneth Jay Lane, and many more. Add in an amazing sale section, no sales tax, and free shipping on all orders and you have one must-visit shopping site! We're giving away a $100 Creative Contrast gift certificate to one lucky Hiver- read on to find out how you can enter!

Father's Day Gifts For The Dad Who Has Everything

If buying my mom a good Mother's Day gift was challenging, buying a Father's Day gift is nearly impossible! Already, there is a sharp decrease in the amount of beauty products, jewelry, apparel and fragrances that are marketed for men. My dad already has everything that he wants and if he doesn't have it, it probably means he can't afford it and if he can't afford it, I definitely can't! So year after year, right about now, I start racking my brains for something that is cool, unique and re-usable. After extensive research and many tiring hours of online shopping, I have come up with a list for myself as well as anyone else who has a hard father to shop for. From the quirky but practical, like a front-pocket wallet to help relieve dad's back stress and deter pick-pockets or a sweet and sentimental personalized photo night-light, you'll be able to find something for you dad who has everything! Your dad would probably buy you the moon if he could. Well, you can beat him to it and buy him an acre of celestial land, complete with a deed and documents! Workaholics, wine aficionados, gourmet gardeners and all those in between, check out this slideshow for some original Father's Day gifts that your doting dad is sure to love!

Wall Decor To Freshen Up A Room Without Breaking Your Budget

Sometimes, I'm so bored that I can just stare at the wall all day. Which got me thinking, wow- I should really mix things up. I've done some research and come up with some really cute wall decor items - from prints to fun shelves to sconces - and compiled them in this slideshow. The best part? All the items I feature are $99 or less. It's nice to know that you can brighten up a room with a mirrored sunburst or nature-inspired gilded lacquer prints without breaking your design budget. Think of the gorgeous light reflection you'll achieve in your room with a metallic flower mirror. Check out my slideshow for more wall decor that won't break your budget!
