The Crop Top: Love it or Lose it?

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jul 25, 2009 9:20 AM PDT
In the fashion world, it's "what is old is new again" all of the time. Everywhere I turn, it seems like the cropped top is one of those "new" old trends that's coming back with a vengeance! They were on the runways (Alexander Wang & Victoria Bartlett, for instance), in tons of editorials, and now it seems like the lynch pin of '90s fashion is even popping into stores! After years of t-shirts and tops getting longer and longer, are we ready to raise the shirt hemline, bare the midriff again, and show off some skin? While the trend seems sexily adorable on tall Eastern European models in the pages of Vogue, is it going to be able to translate to mere mortals? Crop tops can be a great option with high-waisted pants and skirts, as you don't have to tuck in all that excess fabric. But what happens with tighter pants? What's going to hide a woman's worst enemy... the muffin top? Just the thought of wandering the city streets with my belly bare makes me want to lock myself in my apt with my ab roller!

Which "Dancing With The Stars" Premiere Ensemble Was The Most ...

    image
Alex Gambardella on Mar 11, 2009 9:50 AM PDT
This past Monday, the much-anticipated two-hour premiere of Dancing With The Stars Season 8 aired in its full stage makeup and sequined glory, and boy was it an eyeful! The earliest stages of every season are always hectic, as host and judge commentary are cut short and dancers are practically shoved onstage to ensure enough time for all 13 unseasoned pairs to perform; meanwhile backstage commentator Samantha Harris appears progressively more awkward throughout the night as she clumsily searches her brain for more original questions for each panting contestant awaiting their scores. However, Season 8's premiere was considerably even more frenetic than usual, as contestants Holly Madison and Melissa Rycroft were announced as the last-minute replacements for injured drop-outs Jewel and Nancy O'Dell, and were pressured to perform with less than a week of preparation behind them. While audiences love to see certain stars shine, like graceful Shawn Johnson, studly but little-known "Sex And The City" star Gilles Marini, and the unexpectedly poised Lil' Kim, viewers also take pleasure in seeing others clunk around the floor Cloris Leachman style, like Apple whiz Steve Wozniak and Belinda Carlisle did this time around. Our favorite pro dancers faithfully lived up to expectations -- Edyta looking enviably toned as ever in her usual barely-there costumes and Maksim, in true "bad boy" form, already making his partner cry within the first couple weeks of practice (I think that might be a record, even for him). And then there were the costumes. Oh, the costumes -- you just never know what the stars will be sashaying across the dance floor in next, or just how far they'll take the Cha-Cha as an excuse to wear the most ridiculous or risque outfits on national television. I'll admit -- if I had a body like Kym Johnson's, there are plenty of onstage outfits I wish I had an excuse to wear just so I could strut down the street in an obscene display of self-confidence, but others were straight-up too "snazzy" for their own good. Vote below for which premiere outfit you think made the gaudiest first impression!

Style Poll: Sarah Larson's "I Will Survive" Look

    image

To be dumped is hard. To be dumped by George Clooney after serving him as a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas, then dating for two years, living in his villa in Italy, and having several of his friends telling you that you are THE ONE, has got to be damned near soul crushing. So to be able to get up off the mat, wash your face, put on your Friday night best, and go host a party at Tao, in the same city where you and Georgie boy met, well that takes serious guts. That's what Sarah Larson did this past weekend. Photo credit: PR Photos

Trend I Hate: Big Logos, Because I'm Not A Walking Billboard

    image
Lisanne Silverman on May 28, 2008 10:16 AM PDT
Giant logos on clothes and accessories have a tendency to make even the most potentially tasteful pieces appear tacky. The bait of the fashion world, these items remind me of name tags left on for far too long, except instead of reading "Hello, my name is..," they scream not only am I shamelessly feeding designer X's ego on my shoulder/shirt/shoes, but I paid to do it too! Even the most celebrated designers are guilty of blatant brand displays, but at least they have a purpose - they know that there are plenty of fashion victims out there who will blindly scoop up anything with a big bad label. So what's your excuse?

Easter Style Poll: Which Marshmallow Peep Is In Style in 2008?

    image
    Chris K. on Mar 23, 2008 11:16 AM PDT
Whether you celebrate Easter or not, everyone loves Peeps! The anti-nutrition marshmallow snack, part of a bad breakfast, fortified with absolutely no vitamins or minerals, is an Easter staple for kids of all ages. But every year, fashionistas have an important decision to make: which sweet Peep goes best with my current color combination? Because the sugary crystals smeared across your face and sprinkled on your clothes should not clash, people.

Boy Fight! Who Looks the Hottest, Adrian or Jason?

    image

I know how hard Adrian Grenier worked for that beard. Last month I made it to 15 days without shaving and basically couldn't sleep because the hairs, at about an inch long, were stabbing into my cheeks like a million needles when I lay my head on my pillow. One more week of pain, and I would have been on my way to a full Adrian. Now, having hacked it off with a Mach 3, I am about to instead get my hair dyed and spiked, more along the lines of Jason Lewis.
