Trendy Tie-Dyed Pieces That Don't Look Like You Made Them At ...

    image
Alex Gambardella on Jun 29, 2009 10:17 AM PDT
What is it about tie-dye that seems to just ooze summer spirit? I don't know if it's the bright colors or the fond memories of wringing out freshly-dipped t-shirts on the backyard lawn, but I was always secretly rooting for a tie-dye comeback that didn't look too homemade or too hippie. As if the almighty trendsetters read my mind (it's about time!), tie-dye has been sprouting up all over the place -- high-end and affordable retailers alike -- in every place imaginable, from shoes to shades! While stereotypically the print has always been associated with peace signs, flower children, and campy arts and crafts, this season it's keeping it casual with thong sandals and dressing it up in the form of sexy minidresses. Still not convinced? Take a look at the slideshow and see for yourself how today's tie-dye has gone from hippie to hip!

Vintage Fashionistas Keep It Together With Separates

    image

According to my completely unscientific poll, most fashionistas break out the vintage wear for evening. And that makes sense since anyone who follows celebrity fashion usually only gets to see their favorite stars wearing vintage on a red carpet. Who can forget Julia Roberts' stunning vintage Valentino the night she won her Oscar or Penelope Cruz accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a 1950s vintage Balmain masterpiece? Yes, vintage evening wear has tended to survive better through the decades than other pieces because formal affairs happen infrequently. But that doesn't mean that there aren't some plain ol' everyday vintage separates to be found. Check out this eclectic collection of tops and bottoms for vintage fashionistas. Who says the only way to dress at the beach is skimpy? Well, you can still be skimpy, but wait 'til we get to the beach, alright? We're not in Europe, you know. For the sake of style and sensibility alike, choose a tunic to cover up with this summer! The light, airy, boho-like style should already be part of our spring and summer wardrobes, so slipping on a tunic is a great way to perfect your beach-going look. The assortment of colors and styles, and even price ranges, make these worry-free wraps a must-have summer accessory. Pair with a pair of shades and gladiator sandals and you can even transform some of these slideshow picks into out-and-about wear after a day in the sun!

Our 10 Favorite Ways To Give (Or Keep) The Peace

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Dec 24, 2008 12:09 PM PST
Peace signs aren't exactly associated with the most fashion-forward among us, but the icon that characterized way too much of my middle school wardrobe is coming back, and if this isn't music to your ears, you might have to take it up with Barneys Creative Director Simon Doonan, whose 'Hippie Holiday' campaign has renewed many a shopper's love for the iconic symbol and the culture it represents.

So what does this mean? Aside from dizzyingly psychedelic store windows, there are tons of peace sign-emblazoned items to be found, from wearable to edible and everything in between! And Barneys isn't the only retailer who knows it- Free People, DOGEARED, and Felix Rey have put their own spin on peace with tasteful handbags, jewelry, and decor.

Go Boho This Fall With Crochet!

Rich bohemian styles ruled the fall runways and they're back in a big way. They re-emerged this season with earthy printed skirts, floral blouses, layered sweaters and even crochet. Yes, you heard that right- crochet is back! From artsy-crafty meets rocker cool at Anna Sui and Miss Sixty to sexy seventies at Missoni and Gucci, these knits are anything but grannyish! Crochet bags, vest, and scarves are a perfect addition to your boho wardrobe this winter. Go all they way with a purple crochet dress with fringe by Anna Sui. Not ready to commit 100% to the boho style? Crochet accessories are for you. Just a hint of knit on necklace or hat, like the floppy felt hat with a crochet trimmed hat from Hat Attack will do that trick. Go with a little or a lot- either way you'll be feeling free as a bird in these haute-hippie looks. See the slideshow for some more crochet-eriffic styles!

Elle's Fall A to Zee Trends: Urban Bohemia

This fall, join La Vie Boheme by layering on your favorite flowy, studded, and tribal styles. Lightweight printed fabrics bring out your inner bohemian, while studded leather accessories transform your look from hippie to haute. Since this style is all about layers and experimenting with different colors and textures, just about anything goes, but to perfect your urban bohemian look this fall there are a few necessities worth investing in. Studded leather adds that sexy-tough appeal, and these black leather and gold studded ankle booties work as wonderfully with La Boheme looks as they do with jeans. Make this strapless boho-print dress fall weather-proof by pairing it with leggings and a fitted moto jacket, and top your entire look off with loose hair and this ultra-glam braided peacock headband. Check out Elle's A to Zee Trends for Joe Zee's urban bohemia picks, and click on our SLIDESHOW to see our favorite examples of this trend, straight from the Hive.
