    Influential International Style: Helena Christensen

    image
kate napleton on Jun 7, 2009 5:08 AM PDT
How many women of incredible fashion influence can call themselves Victoria's Secret Angels? Well, Heidi and friends had good company in Helena Christensen, the Danish beauty queen and bonafide supermodel. Her fashion credentials run much deeper, as she co-founded Nylon magazine and is its first (and only) creative director. An accomplished photographer, she's had exhibitions in galleries from The Netherlands to China. But her style? To die for, just ask Zac Posen. The woman takes risks, and it pays off. She bridges the gap between red-carpet classic and indie princess. Her looks are always daring, yet demure. She mixes funky with traditional in colors, patterns, and a deep love of sequins. Check out my slideshow for tips on how to Helena Christensen-ize your wardrobe! Photo credit: PR Photos

The holidays are the perfect time to shine. However, as any fashionable girl who's been to a holiday party can tell you, there are definitely ways to have a sparkly holiday take a wrong turn at Cheap St. and end up in Hookerville. Fear not, ladies, for I have gathered several twinkling options for the rest of your holiday occasions! At the top of my Christmas list is the Betsey Johnson 'Savoy' strapless dress- with its satin sweetheart top and high-waisted sequin skirt, it fits like a dream. (Are you listening, Santa baby? It's such a new take on a black and white dress that I might NEED it!) Fewer brands with a celebrity following make me drool more than Haute Hippie, and this sequin stripe dress is no exception. It would even be cute for a night out over skinny black jeans! Check out my slideshow for plenty of cheap-free sparkle-full holiday dress options!

Go Boho This Fall With Crochet!

Rich bohemian styles ruled the fall runways and they're back in a big way. They re-emerged this season with earthy printed skirts, floral blouses, layered sweaters and even crochet. Yes, you heard that right- crochet is back! From artsy-crafty meets rocker cool at Anna Sui and Miss Sixty to sexy seventies at Missoni and Gucci, these knits are anything but grannyish! Crochet bags, vest, and scarves are a perfect addition to your boho wardrobe this winter. Go all they way with a purple crochet dress with fringe by Anna Sui. Not ready to commit 100% to the boho style? Crochet accessories are for you. Just a hint of knit on necklace or hat, like the floppy felt hat with a crochet trimmed hat from Hat Attack will do that trick. Go with a little or a lot- either way you'll be feeling free as a bird in these haute-hippie looks. See the slideshow for some more crochet-eriffic styles!

Ashley Thompson opened Owl€™s Lab in New York City right after moving from a sunny beach in California. And it shows. "Owl's Lab is known for playing into the style trends from both coasts," Ashley explained during my tour of her packed racks and shelves. "I would say that's one of my distinguishing qualities as a buyer, being from the West Coast, but being influenced by my life on the East Coast. I blend the two into the Owl's Lab wardrobe." Stylehive interns Abby and Emily had a great afternoon trying on the latest Owl's Lab outfits and accessories last week. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for 10 amazing oufits they put together with Ashley's help, and read on for our interview with Ashley and her fashion forecasts for summer and fall.
