    Influential International Style: M.I.A.

    image

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam broke into the music scene in 2004 and is simply impossible to forget, because of her lyrics, both catchy and intense ("All I wanna do is... BANG BANG BANG BANG"), and her unique style. M.I.A. seems to take style inspiration from all areas of her life - whether it's her love of prints coming from her past as a graphic designer, or drawing a love of dyeing techniques from her Sri Lankan decent. Her style is incredibly unique - and she puts things together the way no one else would, with a surprising mix of color, crazy textures and a great love of neon and shiny material. To get even close to M.I.A.'s signature style, you'll have to mix it up - bold bangles with loose-fitting neon shirts over shiny leggings with some bright kicks. Top it off with a hat and you're on your way. Check out my slideshow for some great ideas on how to get started incorporating M.I.A.'s look in to your personal style!

Tip Your Hat Towards Summer Style!

    image

This is really the era of self-expression and as long as it looks good and you have the attitude to rock it, anything goes! Skinny jeans and wide-leg trousers are both in style; tops with super long hems as well as cropped cardigans have both become fashion staples, and any bright color, funky pattern and unique silhouette is welcome! The same goes for accessories and this summer, really top off your look with a hat! Usually reserved for slightly cooler weather say, in the winter and fall, hats are really making a statement this summer. From floppy, wide-brim straw hats reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby to classic, sharp fedoras that add edgy attitude to a flirty dress, the wide array of coif-topping styles make it fun and easy to find a shape that works for you! So give your daily SPF moisturizer a little help and invest in a great summer hat to stay cool and stylish all season! I'd say "hats off" to great style, but you'll be wanting to keep them on in this case! Check out the slideshow for a variety of styles and prices to fit your look and budget.

Reel to Real: Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall"

Is there anything more quintessentially New York chic than Diane Keaton's wardrobe in Woody Allen's classic ode to love, "Annie Hall?" Trailblazing and iconic, Annie Hall's style was boyfriend before there was boyfriend: mannish trousers, waistcoats, tailored blouses, bowler hats, wingtip oxfords, and oversize blazers created a look that was part English country gentleman, part West Village bohemian. Even more fashion-forward? The look was pretty much Diane Keaton's own creation. According to movie lore, the film's costumer, Nancy McArdle, was at best dubious about how Keaton's look would appeal to moviegoers but at Woody Allen's vehement insistence, Diane's quirky, personal fashion sense was allowed to remain and become Annie's own. McArdle worked closely with another fashion icon, Ralph Lauren, to design the costumes, including Annie's signature polka-dot tie. Thus, fashion inspiration for the ages was born. Annie Hall's continued influence on fashion is seen in many places today, from the trendsetting looks sported by Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss, and Mary-Kate Olsen, to collections by designers such as Marc Jacobs and Boy by Band of Outsiders. Click the slideshow for a look at how you can channel the best of Annie's looks in today's fashion terms.

I don't know about where you're at, but here in San Francisco the weather is blazing (weirdly enough), and my basic hairstyle isn't doing the trick in keeping the sun from beating down on my face, neck, and part! So why not tap into the upper-body realm of fashion accessories and explore your hat and hairpiece options for tip-top style and function? With the help of this week's Stylescopes, you're sure to find the perfect add-on for your noggin -- from a hip mini fedora for those Aquarius girls to a jeweled mesh flower headband for a Taurus gal's night out, for example -- that will either protect you from the weather, keep your hair out of your eyes, or even salvage a potentially disastrous bad hair day! No matter what the fates have in store for you, you can be sure you'll look chic! Take a look at the slideshow to see the stellar style advice for your sign and more!

Hats That Won't Mess Up Your Hairstyle!

Mom used to say that most of your body's heat escapes through your head. And although technically, this isn't true, any surface left uncovered in frigid temperatures is not a good idea! And if your next excuse is "it will mess up my hair," quit your whining because I've test-driven a few styles that will up your fashion ante and keep your hair coiffed. The key is to pick something with some structure, that also covers your ears. I'm a big believer that headbands do not fulfill the same warmth prophecy. My favorite style this season is something similar to the Modern Girl Slouchy Cap from etsy's Raimbo Tree. Cozy and comfortable! I also love the more 1920's inspired look of BoringSidney's Barbed Wire Cross Cloche, for a more vintage girl-about-town look. Check out my SLIDESHOW for hat options that won't make your hair-do a hair don't!

Out here in Chicago, it can seem like the winter might last forever. Yokoo has me wishing it does! All of her unique handmade scarf creations are acrylic and wool blend chunky knits. The scarves are all oversized - perfect for wrapping up and keeping cozy. One of my favorites is the giant Oatmeal SoopaScarf - it looks like it could keep you AND a friend warm all winter! I also really love the comical vibe and the bright citron color of the English Thompson scarf. For a completely different look, check out the Soopa Chain scarf, sure to be a conversation starter. All of her items take two to three weeks to make, and are definitely worth the wait. Check her out on etsy.com!
